    The Pied Piper of Hamelin is well known to many; so it's a bit difficult to come up with a fresh spin on the tale. Thankfully, Jacy Morris (who is an aficionado in all things horror) brings new life, and death, into a tale that has been done countless times before. The story keeps your attention from the very beginning and has you at the edge of your seat up til the very end.

    Final Synopsis: Breathing new life into a story that has had numerous adaptations done already makes this a fun read. Morris's take on The Pied Piper of Hamelin is a deliciously evil gore-fest for horror fans. Give it a read!

    Lesson Learned: If you live near the woods or in a port town, move. It's that simple.

    Burning Question: If this were a "modern" retelling of the tale, what instrument would you have the Piper playing?

    This story became a historical novel as well as a very well written horror story. I kept thinking about the story during the day and could not wait to continue to read where I left off. I definitely recommend this book to anyone that is both a historical fiction reader and a horror fan.

    Welcome to Hamelin. A town with issues. Not the least of which is bubonic plague, which has been delivered to the human residents by rats in search of a better life. Yes, the rats do have a minor narrative voice. The townspeople are all products/victims of their environment. The church looms like a medieval Amazon, dictating every day life. lol But even the largest, uncompromising zealot is destroyed by disease, or dehumanized by abuse. Enter the Piper, a womanizer, whose father was through with his flute-playing irresponsible ways, one deal with the devil later...and the poor piper is swindling children from Hamelin...The book is dark and does have gore, but honestly, I felt empathy for the characters and there was definitely humor to be found within.

    In a time where classic fairy retelling is nearly a sub-genre, it is no surprise we came across a retelling of The Pied Piper of Hamelin. And Jacy Morris put some good deal of creative here.
    The piper, as the legend tells, first came to expel rats from Hamelin. In real life, fleas that came with the rats were the cause of the Black Plague. So the story puts those two thing combined. In real life, the Black Plague end up creating religious moviments, like the flagellants, so the story ties the 3 things combined. Even the Borgia family made a short apperance here (althought there are unusually presented as a good natured, christian intented people here).
    Never mind that the Black Plague and the flagellants appeared in the middle of the XIV century, while the Borgias ruled from the end of the XV century to begining of the XVI century, while the legend of the piper of Hamelin is from sometime around the XVII century... time misplacement is highly forgivable in the contest.
    What I can't forgive here is there excess of plot holes. Mr. Morris's imagination put a particular entity in a attempt to create the piper's origin, which in my opinion made the whole first 3/4 of the story contraditory. It is hard to say why without give a spoiler, but lets just say that a bit less would be much more in this book.
