Pirate's Curse: Division 1: The Berkano Vampire Collection Kindle Edition

3.9 out of 5 stars 56 ratings

Once upon a time, a vampire and a witch fell in love, and that love fractured the world. Now divided into sixteen isolated Divisions, the world is an unstable and dangerous place.

In the Division of NOLA, Catheryn Beauregard fears her burgeoning magical powers. Hiding as just another slave in the home of the Hoodoo Queen, Catheryn hopes her simplistic powers will simply go unnoticed. And her plan seems to be working...until the Hoodoo House is attacked by a ruthless band of vampire pirates.

Captain Rainier Dulocke and his crew need humans to feed on. In an act of desperation, they beset the Hoodoo House and take ten slaves to sustain them. Rainier takes a girl named Catheryn for himself, but her blood is giving him terrible side effects. Still, he refuses to give her up. Even when the Hoodoo Queen demands her return.

The NOLA Division is in danger. The waters are rising. Food is running out. And the Hoodoo Queen is about to destroy everything that's left if the pirates don't meet her request. Now Catheryn must choose who will die: the humans who sold her, the witches who bought her, or the vampires who stole her. If she fails to decide, everyone could die.

Well I was hooked from the beginning as it has to do with 2 of my favorite subjects pirates and vampires. I though it was well written and kept me interested during the whole book which took me a day and half to read . I am starting on the next book in the series .

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and read it all in one night. It’s a story about a young woman who sold herself into slavery to save her sister and was captured by a vampire with whom she fell in love.

I loved how we get to see Cateryn’s development and bolster in confidence as the book progresses and it wasn’t just an immediate thing. She grew into herself and her acceptance of her responsibilities with her newfound powers. Rainier, I loved him. I loved how the author made him an emotional man, not sappy, mind you, but a man who wasn’t ashamed of expressing his emotions to the woman he loved.

I loved the easy tit a tat between the H and h and found myself grinning at their exchange for the duration of this book.

There were a few grammatical errors here and there. Thankfully, it did nothing to hinder you from enjoying the story. I look forward to the next book in this series and recommend this book to anyone looking for an enchanting paranormal romance.

This is the first book I have read by Leigh Anderson but I have read many by Rebecca Hamilton. I loved several different concepts that were put into place in the story line. The world building fits perfectly with other books from the collection that I have read.

Had a HARD time deciding between 3 or 4 stars, this was not an easily chosen 3. The concept is interesting but there are a few little niggles that keep it from being a 5 at all, and made me on the fence between a 3 and a 4. While it's minor, it could have stood another check over before publishing, there are a few points with easily miss-able to scan overs but horribly noticeable to readers errors (such as bungling up character genders) that broke immersion due to the small moments of "Wait, what?"

The writing also felt somehow overly simplistic (maybe I was reading a book meant for someone younger than me, but the sex scenes make me doubtful of that), and the relationship felt more forced than not (to the point I wouldn't be surprised if this all WAS just hoodoo or vampire seduction or whatever). It felt like there needed to be more space for character development or deeper understanding of BOTH our main characters, but I understand the topic at hand didn't warrant that so much. Those things aside, it was a fun little adventure all the same and I certainly do not regret the read.

    Real rating: 3.5 stars

I have very mixed feelings about this book... Though I liked how it ended, wrapping up in a nice HEA (which I strongly appreciate as it IS a standalone), there were a lot of problems I had with it, especially around the middle.

Let me start off by saying the world is intriguing, though could definitely have been expanded upon more in this book alone. The setting itself wasn't very vivid most of the time and I felt frustrated by the lack of details which had me constantly conjuring up my own vision of things only to have it dashed later on as to what things looked like.

Though the first of the book starts off good, clear conflict, clear antagonists, a willy protagonist, a hot dude, etc, everything just seemed to fall flat. Catheryn went very quickly from being TERRIFIED of this vampire captain to literally nearly sleeping with him. In fact, she WOULD have if he hadn't of passed out from drinking her blood. Hm. If this had been closer to 1/2, 2/3 through, I could see it, as it'd give more time for them to get to know each other and for her to see him as less of a monster.... but it happened around 30-40% in, and though she seemed to have a few moments of attraction before that she still VERY CLEARLY thought of him as a monster, and she seemed to have NO intentions of making herself available to him.

That instance threw me off for the entire middle of the book, especially as she went in and out of being totally scared of him. If she had of come around to him sooner, this would be less weird, but since she didn't... it was weird... bordering on kind of gross.

Anyway, I ended up being okay with their relationship, which of course I knew I would be since Rainier is very charismatic and obviously cares a lot about her. It was mostly Catheryn I took issue with who seemed very back and forth, and not in a normal way, more like bipolar.

Other than some problems with the characters, I enjoyed the plot, even if it was quite predictable.

This is a NON-SPOILER REVIEW. Pirate's Curse: Division 1 is the first in a new series by Leigh Anderson and Rebecca Hamilton. This is my first Leigh Anderson read and I loved it. You can feel the Rebecca Hamilton influence in the story telling, but whatever the collaboration, this is a book worth reading. It's kind of Pirates of the Caribbean, Hunger Games and Charmed combined with LOTS of action thrown in. I really loved the way the characters were developed throughout the storyline with dips and crests in their strengths and weaknesses. Catheryn is beautifully written and easy to admire. Rainier is boldly aggressive and then hauntingly fragile in his ... wait a minute, this is a non-spoiler review. Sorry guys, you'll have to read it to find out. But trust me this is a book you want to curl up with and put out your do not disturb sign! This is a Mature read, but there are no graphic, prolonged sex scenes.

The adventure flowed well until about 60% through the book. It got really teen-angst like and took several eye rolls to trudge through. The end felt rushed with a lot of filling.
I am not disappointed with the story overall, just the climax through the end was a little wonky and hard to keep reading. Almost like it didnt fit the rest of the book.
