Play it by Ear (Replay Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 1,138 ratings

The heart always knows, even when the mind forgets.

My muse is gone, and I haven’t written a word of music in over a year. Every time I close my eyes, all I can see is Dawson. Nine years ago, just before Downward Spiral’s first major tour, I met my soulmate... and then I walked away.

Now that I’ve finally tracked him down again, things have changed. An accident left Dawson without his hearing and unable to remember the one weekend we spent together.

Is it possible I put our single weekend together on a pedestal or could Dawson really be The One? And can I make him fall in love with me all over again?

***Play it by Ear is the second book in the Replay series. Each book in the series will focus on a different band member getting a second chance at love. Each book can be read as a stand-alone.

K.M. Neuhold is a complete romance junkie. bisexual and polyamorous, she often describes herself as being in love with love. She loves to write stories full of bearded, cinnamon roll men who get super swoony HEAs. Her philosophy is there’s so much angst and sadness for LGBT characters in media, all she wants is to give them the happiest happily ever afters she can with little angst, tons of humor, and SO MUCH STEAM. K.M. fully admits to her tendencies of making sure every side character has a full backstory that will likely always lead to every book turning into a series or spin-off. When she's not writing she's a lion tamer, an astronaut, and a superhero...just kidding, she's likely watching Netflix and snuggling with her huskies while her amazing husband brings her coffee.

If you believe that every soul has a match somewhere in the world, you are going to LOVE this book. I don't like reviews that include synopses because I feel they spoil a bit of the story. I will say that the road for Lando and Dawson is long and gut wrenching, but worth every step of their journey. These two navigate their way through loneliness and tragedy to build something beautiful. Lando is a hopeless romantic, refreshing given the jaded way many characters begin. He's determined to find the "one that got away". Dawsons life literally hit an immovable object that changed his trajectory, and has been a bit like a fish out of water every since. These characters are real, down to their core, their interactions genuine (not to mention the flaming physical heat between them), their conversations engaging and believable, and their story will leave footprints on your heart. I loved the incorporation of the TBI and deafness, the way those two things are worked into the story's so respectfully. There are parts of the novel that tend to be a bit predictable, but they make up for it with depth of feeling, pulling at your insides and keeping you entwined in the tale. It is no secret that I am a K.M. Neuhold fan, and amongst all the books of hers I have read, this lands in my top three. This is my second time reading it, and there will undoubtedly be a third. This is a winner.

This was a nice second chance, insta love story. The time jumps get a little confusing. And I really wish there was an epilogue so we can see what happens with Dawson and his career path and hearing. But overall the story is enjoyable.

    Lando and Dawson

So book one was good and I liked it. Book 2 was really good, and I loved it. These two were so perfect for one another. I also enjoyed the quick cameo from an earlier series.

Welcome to the continuing story of Downward Spiral. Lando, burnt out, no longer able to write songs. Desperate for a break, away from the endless touring. Needing to be away from his bandmates Lincoln who tried accidentally (this time) to kill himself, and Jude who is drugged up all the time.

He decides to go to Florida, where almost a decade ago he spent a weekend with a man he hasn't been able to get out of his mind. Knowing that the man obviously hadn't wanted him after that weekend. He still thought he might find the peace he needs there.

Dawson lost his hearing and parts of his past in an automobile accident. He memory a series of blanks that he can't piece together. He knows he misses writing and music. Obsessive about keeping track of what he does everyday. He won't lose time again.

When Lando accidentally finds Dawson he is devastated that Dawson doesn't remember him. When he learns what happened he decides that even though he lost him once it won't happen again.

I liked that even though Lando seemed like the strong one (in the first book) he was just as fragile as Lincoln. I enjoy this authors ability to take a wounded character and make them so much stronger by giving them someone to take care of and love. Definitely read the books in order.

This was such a great story and I highly recommend it. The only thing keeping me from giving it 5 stars is that it didn’t seem like this book was as carefully proofread as others by this author. There are some mistakes left in the final draft and a footnote that I think must’ve been meant for the author to find the answer to.

I really liked this book. The way Lando and Dawson interact both in the past and in then present made me laugh, reflect on a few things, and go all gooey at times.

I identify myself a bit with their love for writing. I write short stories, even thought I used to write long ones, but some things happened in the past, and now I prefer short and finished works than the alternative.

For that reason I was able to understand the feeling of words not coming out, or having them on the surface but not able to grasp them.

Of course, I'm pretty sure that many can identify themselves with that feeling, I'm just expressing that this book reached me and I really loved the devotion and the willingness to sacrifice things or to try to face their fears that both show in the story.

Now, time to go to the next book. Let's see how it goes.

This was an amazing read! Not really a second-chance romance, this was more of a story about soul mates who met, fell hard and fast, and then had a horrible accident tear them apart for 9 years. But fate isn't finished with them yet - and a chance meeting puts them back in each other's world.

Dawson has been struggling for 9 years from the accident that left him deaf, with hazy memories of the years before the accident, but absolutely zero recollection of the weekend right before it occurred. And no-one seems to be able to fill in those blanks and tell him what he was doing, where he was or who he was with. Once a passionate writer, words now escape him. What he does have is his strange obsession with one of the members of Downward Spiral - Lando. A man who features in his dreams in ways that almost seem real....

Lando is lost - the band is falling apart and he can no longer find any words to write. His muse is long gone. What was an amazing weekend, where he was sure he felt a soul connection and that the feeling was mutual, now haunts him. Taunted with the one that got away - with the man who never called despite promising to - Lando decides to make the most of his break and head to Florida for some inspiration, and maybe to hunt down his muse. He didn't expect to actually find Dawson, but his immediate feelings of hope are dashed when Dawson doesn't recognise Lando except as the famous artist he is. There is still a connection and chemistry between them, and as they spend more time together Lando can't help but fall for the man Dawson is now. Can Lando convince Dawson that this is more tham a holiday fling?

The navigation of their new relationship was beautiful to read, as were the flashbacks to when they met those fateful 9 years earlier. Lando is such a beautiful soul which I did not expect from a rock star. He is constantly putting everyone else's happiness and feelings above his own, which has led to the feelings of resentment he has towards his fellow band members. I loved watching him become more self assured, and find himself with Dawson as inspiration. Watching Dawson trust not only someone new, but also himself, made for a beautiful read too. These men are amazing together and I'm very keen to see how their journey progresses in the future.

Loving this series and can't wait to read about the rest of the band! A definite recommend from me!

K.M. Neuhold has such a way with her characters! I love how about amazing Lando and Dawson were as characters.

I believe in fate and destiny, and I loved how much of an important role they played in this story.

Really sweet story for the most part, finding each other again after years apart, one finding fame and the other being deaf and having some memory issues after a near fatal accident. Book 2 of 2 ending with loads of unanswered questions, - annoying.
