This book is so much better than the first two. It's like the author finally figured out how to write the book in a way that made all his ideas flow onto the page. Valis' life is changing in more ways than one and the revelations made in book two are starting to take shape as he tries to take control. I didn't feel lost or confused like I did with the other one and I am so glad that the author has made strides to improve with each book because it's what's keeping me reading so far.
Everything is ramping up and I was glued to my kindle with this one!

Well once again, I was blown away with how this turned. I was NOT expecting this. And am still reeling over it. Darn.

Valis has had Roba, his father, hanging over his head since his birth. The man tattooed him with an evil tattoo, beat him and abused him almost every day for his whole life. And now he’s saying he wants to reveal things. But only if Valis is present. But it was more or less a run around. When Valis and his mentor, Tav, save a sister, Valis knows he needs to see Roba once more before they accompany the sister back to her caravan. But when he goes to see Roba with Tav, Roba blasts Tav with a spell. Valis gets others to help while he deals with Roba, and Roba pins him with magic then kisses him. He commits suicide by pushing his magic into Valis. Valis, of course, is panicked, especially since Roba speaks to him in his mind and he’s not the only one who hears it. The historian he’s mindlinked with hears it too and they are trying to decide if Roba is being truthful or not. He has to be the one to save Tav because of the dark magic, and now after his friends have seen what he’s capable of, he fears they fear him. But now he really needs to train to be in control of the power he has and with this journey ahead of them, the bad feeling in his guy is leaving him extremely fearful. Especially when the historian confirms it.

The troubles Valis is facing in this book are unbelievable. He misses his fathers and are scared for them, he’s accelerating at his training, yet feels like he’s failing because he can’t get his magic under control. Roba is still a thorn in his side. His fear of the man is overwhelming and when he tries to fight back, he can’t be side he’s not strong enough. Which makes him feel like an even worse failure. One of his friends, Aryn, is coming on too strong and really freaking him out but nice talking to him isn’t working. Tavros is who he wants. And to beat everything, Roba committed suicide, forcing his powers into Valis. And now the Sovereign Priest is giving him a title he hasn’t even earned yet but now has to live up to. And find a mate for. Things just keep get piled up and it’s all getting too much for him. I wept for him so many times in this book, because he just cannot catch a break. Now matter how hard he tries.

Times are changing as well. War is coming. Premonitions are showing different things but they all have one result and it’s not a good one. And this journey they are about to take, their survival rests on Valis’s shoulders. Shew. Too too much for that boy. Not to mention a few other surprises thrown in there. And not pretty ones.

Needless to say, I’m extremely anxious to see how this is going to turn out. If you guys aren’t reading this series, you need to. It’s so so good.

    4.5 🌟 rounded up

This book concludes the Duty and Sacrifice trilogy, but don't let that fool you. This sets the stage for the next trilogy, Purity and Control, so don't think for a second that you will get a full story.

I am really enjoying this saga, but as I have seen mentioned in other reviews, there is an awful lot of crying. I have mentioned in reviews of the previous books how tactile the characters are, but it is starting to get a little old. Other than that, the storyline flows nicely from Avristin, the second book in this trilogy.

Valis is still missing his fathers, but his training is far exceeding Tavros's mentoring plan. And while Valis still fights his own demons, I have to remind myself that technically he is just finishing puberty, despite his age. While Tav is patient most of the time, he still calls Valis "kid," and uses his mentor mask when needed. And, although there are brief hints, Valis's infatuation still appears to remain one sided.

The plotline throughout this book is Valis and his encounters with Roba. There are different ways this happens, but Valis finds himself afraid yet determined at each meeting. That is until Roba attacks Tav, and violates Valis (not in a trigger warning way). At that point, Valis finds himself in a new and unfamiliar, unsettling situation: Roba is dead, but he won't go away.

A new character is added to the group of friends, which leads to Valis, Tav, Seza, and Zhasina leaving on a quest. And, to make Valis's life just that much easier, his best friend Aryn just refuses to take a hint. But before they leave, the Sovereign Priest throws in a twist that has the powerful historian, Thyran, about ready to burst. After he has a talk with the four young travelers, he gives a dire warning...which of course is where the trilogy comes to an end.

    Happy reading!

    * I received an ARC of this book and I am leaving my honest review. *

This is the third story in the series. Valis has begun war training, thou he is training more for magic training. He is extremely attracted to his mentor, Tavros. Valis’s father, Roba is demanding that Valis visit him, but Valis isn’t willing. Well written, strong characters, and fantastic story line. I am voluntarily leaving a review form an ARC that I received. My reviews are solely based on my thoughts and opinions.
