Practical Project Management: Proven Framework That Great Project Managers Use In the Real World Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 89 ratings

Most project managers don't have a formal education. Unfortunately, they need to collect bits and pieces of knowledge all over the internet.

Sometimes, it feels like you need to fly an airplane while still building it.

Moreover, there's a huge gap between the theory and practice of project management! You can spend hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars on certifications, but still, you won't know what to do with all this knowledge. You won't feel confident about running a project in a real company with a real team.

That's why reading Project Management Institute's PMBOK® Guide is not the best option. It's a great book, but it's an encyclopedia. You don't take one to solve practical problems.

In contrast, this book teaches you a practical project management approach that works in the real world. It provides you with:

  • A structured project management framework. It will help you manage a project from start to finish with easy-to-use templates, tools, and PM software.
  • Step-by-step process of project planning. You can scale it up and down depending on the complexity of a project.
  • A proven system to manage stakeholders and their expectations. Learn how to engage them in a project so that they help you rather than impede your work.
  • My robust risk management workflow that your team and stakeholders can easily understand and follow.
  • A sequential process of creating a realistic schedule. It's also easy-to-follow step-by-step instructions that you can implement in any project management tool.
  • Essential tools to manage project scope and collect requirements even if you don't have business analysis experience.
  • Case studies and examples for tools and processes that you can relate to.
  • Supporting resources that include templates and additional materials that you can use as a starting point on your project.

If you want to be a great project manager, you need to use this approach as the backbone for each new project. It is simple so that your team understands it. Moreover, it is scalable for different levels of the project's complexity. What's more important, it is NOT theory in a vacuum.

As a seasoned PM with twelve years of experience, Dmytro Nizhebetskyi understands all your challenges. He's still in the trenches.

That's why this book will help project managers of all levels:

  • If you are an entry-level PM, you need to master the approach described in this book. It's all you need for the first three to five years of your career. It's much better than reading theory from the PMBOK® Guide.
  • If you are a mid-level PM, you'll systemize your knowledge into an integrated project management approach. It will help you pass your PMI's Project Management Professional (PMP) exam and improve your skills. You'll fill all the gaps in your understanding of project management.
  • If you are a senior-level PM, this book will serve you as a refresher. I'm also sure you'll find some golden nuggets from my twelve years of experience as a software project manager. In addition, it will give you a foundation for teaching junior-level PMs in your organization.

After reading this book, you'll have a solid understanding of project management. But what's more important, every new tool, technique, or process that you'll learn going forward will have its place in the framework.

Imagine that you can gain confidence that you do project management as good as other great project managers. You know all the essential processes and tools. Moreover, you have a repeatable PM framework that works in any company.

Real world project management approach
This book does a great job of teaching about Mindset, Life Cycle, working with Stakeholders, Risk Management, the planning process, scope of work, estimation, budget and execution. Unfortunately there is very little on motivation of team members however the author does mention other sources to find those techniques. A plus is the author has some great templates for parts of the job like Risk & Scope management on their website. This book is great if you are just starting out or want to learn how to hit each step better and with more confidence. But if you need a more technical book with more charts I suggest… Project Management For IT-Related Projects 3rd edition edited by Bob Hughes.

I'm a middle school teacher turned project manager. I struggled to find information in the PM field that was explained practically and could actually be applied. This book has been a lifesaver! Way more practical than PMBOK. The book describes applicable PM processes, provides templates, and more importantly describes the "why" and "how" on most things: leadership, stakeholder engagement, risk management, etc.

    This is a MUST read!

It teaches a practical approach, it's written by a project manager for project managers.
Despite that the author's background is related to software development, advices and topics work for all types of industries.
    I totally recommended it.

This was an excellent read. It provided real-world experience in a conversational tone. I wouldn’t consider it a study guide; however, it’s a very valuable PM resource.

Most project management books are all theory and little practical real-world application. I'm not discounting the importance of theory, and Dmytro Nizhebetskyi and Andrew Dawson do a great job of incorporating the theory. Where this book really stands out, though, is in how it uses the theory to show you real-life applications and how you can customize the many spreadsheets PMs are always using to meet your specific needs. Great job!

It's not just a book. It's a step-by-step guide on making your project better right now. How to calculate risks and budget, plan and execute, apply all this in an actual project, meet your commitments, etc. ALL this with ready-to-use templates and formulas and additional video lessons which set you for success. Amazing work.

P.S. Book is solid with nice white paper

This is the 3rd PM book I’ve read in the past few months and was refreshing to read a book which has real world advice. Watch some of the YouTube videos from author and you’ll get a feel for his narrative style which works for me. I’m from a technical background recently taking a role as tech pm for a software company and the author experience is in software dev PM so a great fit. Will read a few more times but well worth the money
