Pulled (A Flawed Short Story) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 31 ratings

Eight-year-old Juniper has been labeled many things—troubled kid, orphan, runaway—but none of her foster families have known what she really is: a girl with a unique and brutally inconvenient ability to teleport.

Her spontaneous jumps are not only beyond her control, they get her into trouble. When Juniper disappears, no one believes her wild stories, so she's stopped trying to convince them.

One day when Juniper gets pulled away, finding her way back is harder than ever. Stranded on the side of a deserted highway, she must rely on her own instincts to determine who is a creepy stranger and who she can trust.

Resourcefulness may get her home, but is getting home enough when you don't have parents that love you?

Juniper knows something most people don’t: there are others like her with unexplained abilities. Until now, she’s exercised stranger-danger caution, but maybe these people can offer what she needs.

Will Juniper find a family she can share her secrets with?

This brisk tale of adventure will have you rooting for the little guy…er, girl…as she battles her supernatural flaw and faces the unknown. Pulled is a prequel to the upcoming Uniques series.
This story is short enough to be read in a sitting yet long enough to make you fall in love with a fiesty, loveable, and spunky new character. Download Pulled today!

Editorial Reviews

Review

"I loved it! You meet Juniper and understand more of her world in a few short pages than most folks would of many characters found in full length novels." - Mark Asher

"
Pulled is an interesting and gripping story. I love the straight forward writing style: the dialogue feels natural and believable, and the pace is not derailed by unimportant details. I want to know more about Juniper and her friends, and I want to hear about all the characters' abilities and secrets!" -Camilla Kyndesen

"
From beginning to end, this short story was packed with action and excitement and mystery." -Bobbi Kinion

Pulled is a short story from the Flawed universe, which I have become completely immersed and attached to. After falling in love with the characters from the main series, I knew I had to read this as soon as I read the description.

I was really able to identify with Juniper, who couldn’t control her power and was frustrated because no one believed her. All of Campbell’s characters are so wonderfully written that it’s like I know them, and the story is so rich that it’s hard to believe it’s just a short story.

Having read all three of the full-length novels, I jumped up and down in my seat when one of the villains showed up, hoping he wouldn’t do anything to Juniper. He wasn’t someone you had to know about, though, so it still worked as a standalone short.

I wish it wasn’t so short! The end came way too soon for me and I really wish it was a full novel of its own because I really want to find out what happens to Juniper and the other “specials” and see how their abilities manifest themselves.

If I hadn’t already read so much from this universe, I would be really itching for more of the Flawed series. As it is, I am pacing the floor waiting for Book 4 to come out so I can find out what kind of havoc the new villain is going to wreak.

What a cute little story to add to the Flawed series. I loved the young girl who was the main character. I loved the way Becca J. Campbell tells her stories. They always seem believable. Her writing is clear.

BUT I hate short stories. They always leave me with more questions than answers. This is no different. Though the story didn't end in a cliffhanger, it still left me wondering what happened next. What causes the Pull? How did it start?

Oh, it is refreshing to read about a person that isn't in her teen to mid-twenties.

I hope there is more about this character coming up.

Juniper stole my heart from the first page. Because she is only eight years old, she faces different challenges than the other characters in the Flawed Series. I would love to read more about her in the future to see what happens to her after this story ends.

PULLED is a short story in Becca J. Campbell’s “Flawed” series. The first novel in the series, EMPATH, is already out. PULLED is told from the perspective of eight-year-old Juniper. She's a runaway plagued by unplanned and unwanted teleportation incidents; one moment she is one place, and the next moment another. This is her "flaw." It means she is constantly being accused of running away from her foster homes, and of course nobody believes her outrageous explanations. All she knows about this flaw is that she is somehow "pulled" to the location of other people with flaws, though they don't seem to know how it happened either.

It is impossible not to immediately sympathize with Juniper's situation. Empathy builds as we learn that Juniper is tough, but not hard. Campbell does a fine job of keeping Juniper vulnerable; she is hungry, thirsty, tired and unhappy, just like a real kid. The story really picks up when she meets a young woman with flaws of her own. This woman feels an immediate need to help Juniper. Their dynamic together is great and I found myself rooting for these two to stay together. And it appears this is about to happen.

And then the story ends. What? This if the flaw (pun intended) in this short story. It doesn't really tie anything up, it just ends. I'm sure this is intentional, because it is a great cliff hanger for the series. In fact, it reads like a novel prologue. But as a short story it really fails to stand on its own. So I find myself torn, I really like this as a tease for the series, but find it annoying as a stand-alone story. I want to know what happens with these two! I'm going to assume that Campbell brings the reader more of this duo somewhere in the novels, in which case the reader is advised to read this story as a great prologue. But if the reader approaches this as a stand-alone story, then prepare to be annoyed.

Great book!! The story line had me pulled in from the first page!

After reading Empath, Book 1 in the Flawed Series, last year, I was super excited to see this release from Becca J. Campbell. Pulled is a short story within that series, and it is a departure from Empath as it introduces readers to new characters.

The first character readers meet is 8-year-old Juniper, who has the ability to get pulled to people with other individuals with special powers. At first I was worried that Juniper's being eight would prevent me from falling into the story, but that proved to not be the case as I was hooked from the first page as Campbell describes the feeling that comes over Juniper as she starts to be pulled. Can you imagine jumping through space and ending up hours away from where you just were? This is what Juniper deals with on top of being in foster care, and of course no one understands that she isn't some run-away. Her situation makes Juniper mature for her years, but she still exhibits child-like qualities that I found endearing and I took to her right away.

Ronen, who you don't meet until halfway through is also special, and her interactions with Ronen from the apprehensive beginning to the end were enjoyable. You could definitely feel the change between the two over a span of a few short pages. Dr. Aven and Asher don't come into Pulled until the end, and I still have so many questions about them and I just want more.

Pulled is fully capable of being a standalone story, but I would really enjoy meeting up with Juniper, Ronen, Dr. Aven, and Asher again even if only in a series of short stories rather than a full book. It could be a fun way to weave characters together throughout all of the books in the series.

Well done, Becca Campbell, I look forward to more from the Flawed Series.
