The Rake and his Honour Kindle Edition

1813 Napoleon is on the rampage through France. But some are not willing to sit back and witness the end of the reign of King Louis and the Bourbons. Louise Fauriel comes from a family of talented silversmiths. Recently widowed by the smallpox, she and her grandfather live with her brother and his wife in England. Using their art shop as a front, the family run messages between the Comte d’Artois and his brother, King Louis. Louise, who is an excellent rider, is in France, delivering a message for the cause. But Napoleon’s Secret Police are patrolling the area, searching for any signs of a revolt and keen to intercept any messages that could harm their campaign. When Louise is forced to take refuge in a cave, tired and alone, she meets Arnaut – the most handsome man she has ever seen. Arnaut, the son of the Marquis de Fontane, who is also a loyal supporter of the king, is hiding from Napoleon’s men, when Louise stumbles into the cave and collapses in his arms. Arnaut’s father is willing to organise a revolt if the king will send a member of his family guaranteeing the French freedom of religion. The marquis asks his son to deliver a letter requesting this to the king in England. He sets off, soon finding his path once again entwined with the bewitching Louise. When Louise is kidnapped by Julie Delaville, one of Napoleon’s elite spies, Arnaut trades the letter he is carrying for her life. But when Arnaut’s leg is badly injured, it falls to Louise to carry a letter through dangerous territory to the marquis. As Louise embarks on her mission, she starts to question whether she will ever get what her heart truly desires. Besides, what is love between two people when so much is at stake…? Set during a time of intrigue and uncertainty, The Rake and His Honour is a must for fans of French history.
Praise for Beth Elliott
‘Beth Elliott's books are witty, engaging and totally entertaining’ –
Nicola Cornick, USA Today bestselling author

Always keen to travel,
Beth took a degree in Modern Languages in preparation for a life of adventure. Her first job was in France, where she met her Turkish husband, another keen traveller. After some years lecturing at Ataturk University in eastern Turkey, they became languages teachers in England. Inspired by the novels of Jane Austen, Beth set her own Regency Tales in the Napoleonic era, featuring adventure, intrigue and romance. Thanks to the years in Turkey, some tales include exotic settings and events. Nowadays Beth’s travelling is mostly done via the characters in her stories. According to an official review, her novels are “full of enjoyable moments”.

Beth Elliott always loved tales of long ago and far away, but soon the world of Jane Austen became her favorite place to go for company and pleasure. No wonder she sets her own stories in the era of Napoleon.

Beth's Regency Tales are stories of intrigue, adventure and romance, with a few real people in among the cast of characters, who find themselves caught up in events rather outside their normal lives. She hasn't yet put Napoleon in a story, but he's on the waiting list. On the principle of ladies first, especially in the Regency era, Lady Hester Stanhope played a small but vital role in 'Scandalous Lady.'

From her own experience of life in Turkey, Beth likes to add a touch of exotic to some of her stories, especially the series about the Montailhac brothers. But adventure and romance can just as easily occur in London, Bath or Brighton.

An adventurous love story set in the Napoleonic era, The Rake and his Honour by Beth Elliott is a lively and most enjoyable read. The likable characters and the combination of romance, intrigue, and adventure kept me turning the pages.

    Highly recommended.

These frothy, adventurous tales are just perfect for an hour or two on a Saturday afternoon. They aren't particularly deep but still offer a compelling story and attractive characters. For me, the cutout covers are a signal that I will get a mostly traditional Regency with a dash of adventure. In this, we meet Louise, a young woman who is delivering letters in the service of the French kings against Bonaparte. She is a French Protestant, living in London, sent back to the motherland on behalf of her grandfather — and what an adventure she has. From her close call in the Pyrenees to her meeting with Arnaut, the most handsome man she has met, to her return to London (where who else shows up?) to her courageous journey back to France, this is a brave, resourceful heroine. Elliott brings in enjoyable bits of history — the silvermakers in exile in London, the condition of the French court, also in exile, and just everyday life of both French and English people. This is a most enjoyable read. ( I received an ARC at NetGalley. Opinions are mine).

Despite a little heavy handed drama and angst, I enjoyed this book. It kept me turning pages, wondering how our plucky protagonists would escape from certain (probable? possible?) demise at the hands of requisite evil villains, to arrive at their inevitable HEA. Sweet sensuality, but the "rake" does have his implied but non-graphic sexual conquests early on.

Messages passed between nobles in Spain and England, spies bent on killing and maiming the messengers - a widow and a rake, gutsy chances that pay off despite serious injuries, and love that surmounts difference in status, this is a very enjoyable adventure and love story combined.

This is a different slant on this period in history, from a French Huguenot's point of view. The story is somewhat contrived since it is unlikely that Louise would be in France when the story begins. The idea that the such a powerful family as the de Fontanes were able to escape the Terror and Napoleon with so little disruption is also a little hard to believe.
Nevertheless, the story does hold one's interest and is a fun read.

This novel continues with some of the same characters (the brother Arnaut) from A Scandalous Lady, but is set in London and in southern France. I have enjoyed this author's books, especially learning about some of the cultures and history that you don't usually get in a Regency novel. Here there is a interesting look at the Huguenots in England and the Royalists in Napoleonic France.

I recently read another Beth Elliott “Rake” book and it was sooo delightful. This dragged on and on and had no tension between the two characters. It fell into the “misunderstanding that could be easily resolved by a simple talk” trap. Also what man constantly thinks of himself as a “rake.” Arnaut literally talked to himself about being a rake like every couple chapters it felt like. Anyway, disappointing because the other one was so amazing.

A wonderful book about history but also about life and love and living in times of war and peace.

The writer's style compliments a story that keeps the reader glued to the page. The twists and turns of the story finally lead the reader to discover the truth about Arnaut! Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars fun, but for the ending

Why couldn't this have finished just a couple of pages earlier?? It had been an enjoyable clean story, until the very end where we have off-stage specifically pre-marital sex between the the main characters (on-stage would have dropped my rating to 1-2 stars). When they'd specifically avoided it so far, why not just leave it out? Other than that (which has made me decide not to keep the book to re-read, because I was disgusted on principle), I enjoyed the storyline and characters. If such behaviour doesn't bother you, this is a fun light read with a bit of suspense thrown in.
