Razor: Fantasy Thriller – Becoming a Hero Kindle Edition
A mourning husband can’t live with his guilt…
... he decides to die, not by his own hand, but in heroically helping the vulnerable.
Since the peaceful Cotswold countryside offers limited opportunities for heroism, despite the presence of some weird and dangerous inhabitants, he ventures further afield.
To his annoyance, new and unlikely friends mysteriously appear everywhere he goes, foiling his plans and sending him back to square one.
Will he succeed or will he come to terms with his grief first? Was his wife as blame free and perfect as he thought or will lurking suspicions of infidelity be proved right?
'It was ironic that having nothing left to lose except his life, his life had become interesting again.'
If you like fantasy thrillers, you'll love Razor by Wilkie Martin.

About the author

Wilkie Martin is a bestselling comedy and cozy mystery writer. He lives in the Cotswolds, UK with his partner in a town remarkably similar to the fictional Sorenchester of his unhuman series, although he has never come across a policeman there like Inspector Hobbes.
He loves cooking, especially curries which is why his characters tend to like things spicy and despite living as far away from the coast as is possible in the UK, he is a qualified scuba diving instructor.
Wilkie's latest book is a comedy crime fantasy story - Inspector Hobbes and the Common People.
There are now 5 books in his unhuman series of comedy cozy mystery fantasy novels, described by Cotswold Life magazine as 'odd, inventive and genuinely very funny indeed':
I - Inspector Hobbes and the Blood
II - Inspector Hobbes and the Curse
III - Inspector Hobbes and the Gold Diggers
IV - Inspector Hobbes and the Bones
V - Inspector Hobbes and the Common People
They can be read standalone but are best read in order. They are available on kindle, paperback, large print paperback, hardback and audiobooks.
Find the first 3 unhuman books together in his ebook bundle - First Ever Unhuman Bundle.
Find the first 4 unhuman books in the Hobbes omnibus (paperback, hardback and audiobook).
He also has a fantasy thriller - Razor
an a little book of silly verse - Relative Disasters - that chronicles the various humorous but fatal mishaps that happen to family members.
Children's books are written as Wilkie J. Martin, and a cookbook as his character A.C. Caplet.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2020I'm not a fan of the unhuman series. Maybe it would have gotten better if I could have finished the first book and gotten to the second... However! This is a book that could easily translate into a comic book or a movie. The writing is very vivid and the storyline is cutting. The main character is both aggravating and sympathetic. The exact kind of person that you feel horribly sorry for but don't want anywhere near you. It's the train wreck that you don't want to see but can't look away from.
It's likely one that I'll be rereading at some point.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2022I enjoy the Unhuman stories. This one is a bit different since Hobbes doesn't appear, but there are some sly references that make it fun, like keeping teeth for someone who collects them... The main character is kind of a sad sack, I feel like that's been done, and it's really the only reason I didn't give the book five stars. It starts slowly, then moves along. There isn't a lot of expository material early on, the story builds its own arc as it goes along.
I'm hoping more is coming.

I started reading the book, and pretty soon I was back in a lovely spot of Sorenchester. Eclectic, and entrancing. As Kev would say... Alas tis over too soon. Great read very fun. I always enjoy the characters Wilkie develops. I guarantee you will not want the book to end, and as I, will look forward for the next book.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2021I had read all of the Hobbes series, so was happy to see this new series.
Many times when a new series starts, I find that the new series is just like the previous one. This was totally different and led the reader on a wonderful journey with different plot lines and mysteries. I kept wondering if Razor might run into Hobbes and kind of hoped he would.
Ready for the next one Mr. Martin.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2019As a fan of “unhuman” series by the same author I was looking forward to his new book expecting light and charming entertainment. I was not disappointed. The action is set in similar settings as previous series but the protagonists are different and there are fewer “unhumans” in it. But there are some. The main hero, Ray/Razor, suffers from depression after his wife death and decides to end his life by defending victims of brutal attacks by the local thugs. Obviously things do not go exactly as planned and in a course of his actions Razor encounters many interesting characters; bad, good and …mysterious.
This is not a serious book. But it is a charming and funny read that you may enjoy while in need of light entertainment. What I liked the most about it is that it made me smile.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2022With scenes from 'The Tempest' stirred in.
Mr Martin has been on a Shakespeare jag, and is having fun. A lot of fun.
This story has several layers, some serious, some not. A certain Dr Freud would call it psychotherapy, getting to grips with grief. It is, but in a pleasant package.
A tale, not told by a fool, full of sound and fury. I would not say signifying nothing, but I would say all's well that ends well.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2020I read this entire book not knowing if Ray was a nut job or a human possessed. Of course he was neither, I don’t think, but I have no proof. This book was interesting, well written, and memorably quirky. Give a try and see what you think.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable
It took a while to get into this book. The main character Ray (Razor) starts off as a thoroughly useless, pathetic idiot and stays that way for a considerable time.
It is worthwhile persevering though as the book picks up pace and a few mysteries are revealed. Give it a go.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic and Thrilling, especially for Cotswold residents (& even Pigton ones!)
Having read a number of Wilke Martin’s Unhuman series, I thought I would try this. Full of dark humour and mystery, I enjoyed the crossover connections between Razor and the other series. It certainly makes trips to Cirencester even more enjoyable and interesting and I will hope for further instalments.

4.0 out of 5 stars Darker Twists
I brought this not realising that the author was also responsible for the Inspector Hobbs Series !
A much darker plot line and story than that series but just as enjoyable and throughly readable.
I sincerly hope that we get more from these characters and the development of the relationship between all the main characters - Who and whatever they turn out to be.
The story line is rooted much more in the real world people bleed and die, corruption and arson more personal detailed but without loosing the supernatural elements and charm of the Hobbs Series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the wait
It has been a long wait for a new book from Wilkie Martin and I felt quite anxious that he was leaving my favourite characters behind. This new book with the very improbably named Razor is very readable - whilst the distinctive style is still very much in evidence the plot was very different but very enjoyable, like another reviewer I read this in one fell swoop almost as soon as I downloaded it. Cannot tell you more without giving away far too much so I suggest you purchase this and have a very pleasant read whilst Christmas lunch is digesting.
