A fantastic, must-read debut!
5 out of 5 stars
A fantastic, must-read debut!
I don’t read much dystopian—I’m not sure why, but overall it’s not a genre I tend to gravitate toward. Still, the concept of Reactive sparked my curiosity and I just had to give it a shot when I was asked to beta read. No. Regrets. I literally could not put Reactive down. The entire time I was on the edge of my seat wondering what could possibly happen next, and trailing the development of a very feelsy romance. I absolutely devoured this story and its fantastic cast of characters. Lune is a strong, sassy character with a distinct voice and a lot of personality. Her fight for freedom and survival is admirable, and I think there are some beautiful lessons to be learned about finding one’s own strength. Bren is sweet and his banter with Lune is A+. He definitely seems to have his secrets though, so I’m excited to see how his character progresses. >.> Both main characters have very relatable quirks that made me fall in love with them all that much more. But don't think Reactive lacks side characters--a certain stable hand is one of my absolute favorites. ;) And the horses! Can we talk about the horses? Probably not, without spoilers… But let’s just say that even despite their less-charming feature, I want one. Or five. I literally don’t have the words to tell you guys how much I love this book. So check it out. This does not feel like a debut novel. <3 _____________________________ TL;DR: Packed with first-rate action, delightfully snarky characters, and a swoon-worthy romance, Reactive won't release you until you've read every word!

This was a new spin on YA dystopian fiction and it felt so invigorating to read! Reactive is one of those books that sits with you for weeks after you read it! There are protagonists you REALLY, truly root for - as if you’re honestly invested in their lives, and antagonists you REALLY HATE (and honestly, kind of fear!). I cannot wait to read the second and third books set in this wild world!!
It can be on the heavier side - especially emotionally. This one will make you feel things that aren’t always happy feelings, but I truly believe that’s what makes it great!

Trigger Warnings for: child abuse, blood, and lots of violence, one incident of assault with sexual undertones. Emotional maturity is needed to read some parts of this book, so make sure you’re up for it!

This book is great. I could not put it down until closer to the end. There were many unique aspects to this novel. However, I gave it four stars instead of 5 because the end was much like Hunger Games. It started to become difficult and frustrating to read every time something happened that had happened in the Hunger Games. It got my mind out of her story and thinking about the other. However, I still consider Becky a great author, and I liked the book enough to continue to the next. * I have also read another series of Becky’s, and it’s great! This review is not meant to be negative. I encourage you to read her novels and see into the unique parts of her stories.

Reactive is fast-paced and action-packed, the stakes building and snowballing with every chapter. I couldn't stop reading. The author has compared her book to The Hunger Games, which I feel is an apt description in style. The story is told through the POV of Lune Avery, kidnapped at seven and abused by her adoptive father. She's willing to do anything to win the Elite Trials that would free her from Tatum City.

There are a lot of fun, and not-so-fun (but in a good way), twists. A lot of interesting reveals. But the plot never feels bogged down by it all. I think this might be true because this book is very character-driven. That's an odd thing to say about a book such as this, but Moynihan takes a lot of time with her characters. Lune's emotions and thoughts are at the forefront of the story, and they are powerful.

The ending is explosive. This book does well in setting up a sequel, though it didn't feel like it was all set-up. The ending, especially, make me want to read the sequel.

Moynihan does a wonderful job in creating three-dimensional characters. Case in point: Lune Avery.

Lune is the main character of this story, and she takes a very active role. She is headstrong, experienced, motivated, snarky, and willing to do what it takes, no matter what. But she does have fears, some debilitating and some not so much. As I mentioned before, her emotions are an integral part of the story--there is no mistaking what she's feeling at any point in this book. It was easy for me to cheer her on, to laugh with her, and cry with her.

Bren, the love interest in the story, is also a fascinating character. A lot of things about him are purposefully hidden away, but what we do see of him is his strength, integrity, and indecision. He's also frustrating in many ways, but I felt it added to the story, added to Lune's frustrations enough that it didn't detract.

The romance between Lune and Bren is a large part of the story, and I really enjoyed seeing their relationship grow. The banter between them is hilarious at times, sweet at others. I'd also like to say that Becky is amazing at kissing scenes.

The world Moynihan has planted her readers in is both fascinating and brutal. The author doesn't pull her punches. Tatum City is a cruel place of tyranny, abuse, hazing, and punishment. Is there any doubt Lune wants to leave this place?

Tatum City is a place that stands after the Silent War, a war that took out 90% of the world's population. What's left are small populations like Tatum City, where those who want to survive must fight for it. The Elite Trials seem to be in the same vein as The Hunger Games, but it sets itself apart with the intricate details of the competition and the different dystopian aspects. Mutated, deadly horses and bears, strange decayed gadgets. It feels very much like a disintegration of modern society.

I'm excited to see how Moynihan expands this world because we see only a small part of it in this book. But what's there is well written and thought out.

Overall, this book is fun, action-packed, emotional, and romantic. I loved every second of it and can't wait to get my hands on the sequel.

This is the best series I've ever read. First, the world building in this series was incredible. I love dystopian stories, and it's hard to find ones that differ from the norm and stand out. The romance was just heavy enough but tasteful. Lune herself had me laughing outloud with some of her comments and thoughts, her smart-ass take on things was spot on!! The action versus world and character building versus internal dialogue paced perfectly. Incredibly strong female protagonist that didn't need a man to save her but welcomed the one that did. I often had to stop myself from reading so fast in the excitement! The only thing i didn't like was that it ended... Following the author with fingers AND toes crossed to write a spin off!!!!!!

What a journey. Lune was kidnapped as a child and placed with the leader of a community who is also ruthless.

The story is great. Characters are developing really well and become more likeable as the book develops. Lune seems a little wingy to start with but I think as her character strengthens she becomes much better.

I’m looking forward to the next book.

I absolutely loved this book!! Such a great world this series is set in.

Lune went through so much during her time in Tatum City, and then along comes Bren. Their developing relationship was sweet, even though it grew through very trying times.

I'm moving onto book 2 straight away!!

What a ride! This story has given me life! The characters are so likeable and the plot is ever-engaging. The twists were weaved in perfectly.

It had the combative undertones of The Hunger Games and a love story to match Divergent.

    I’ve already one-clicked book two.
