Reckless (Exley & Dyer Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 111 ratings

When pirate Henry Dyer’s ship captures the French frigate Sans Souci, nobody seems to know why Captain Buckler has been chasing such a neglected and unprepossessing prize ship. The puzzle only gets more perplexing when they take the ship and find an English girl in leg irons.

It’s an old and popular love story – the pirate and the virgin who steals his heart away, only this time the pirate is the virgin and the girl isn’t a girl at all. She is James ‘Jem’ Exley, thief, molly, occasional actor and full time transvestite. Jettisoned to the New World in order to spare his aristocratic family any further disgrace, Jem is glamorous, flamboyant and fascinating.

At only nineteen, Henry is determined to prove himself a man one way or the other, and is astonished to find that nothing makes him feel like more of a man than his increasingly reckless passion for Jem. As their love leads them into trouble, the mysterious circumstances of Jem’s capture lead Henry deeper into a mystery that not only upends his whole world, but sees them running for their lives across the Caribbean.

Stolen jewels, scheming Captains and devious drag artists - Black Sails meets Blackadder in this steamy eighteenth century romp from the author of These Violent Delights and Going Sasquatch.

I knew I was going to enjoy this book, but I loved it even more than I was expecting. Pirates! Genderqueer character! Gay romance! And fantastic, witty writing! It checks all my boxes. I read it all in one night- the story flows so fast and smooth, I couldn't stop reading. Lots of great intrigue and adventure on top of an already engaging romance. Jess really knows how to weave a good plot, and make it charming and funny and intense and emotional all at the same time. I love the characters and the story so much! My only lament is that I can't have a physical copy of this book to cherish and keep on my shelf.

I've now read almost all of this author's work and she never fails to impress.

Pirates are not my thing, but this story is more than pirates. It's finding your place, finding your way, finding your love -even if you're both a couple of thieves.

Whitecroft is an excellent and intricate world builder and storyteller. I look forward to more adventures with Exley & Dyer!

It’s the little things that make up the sum total of anything in life – including reading. There is so much I can’t put into words that make this such a lovely book. Why the author is very good. Little phrases and actions and moments that are golden.

I was telling a friend the other day that Jess Whitecroft’s writing is like published crack for me. I’m addicted. Doesn’t matter whether Bigfoot is cutting lose, politicians and journos, ballet dancers and professors, rock star addicts and a friend’s younger brother, or drag queens with attitude and sandwiched in a ménage fill up the pages, Jess Whitecroft makes them all come alive, speaking to me in some way or another. The various backdrops and circumstances surrounding characters in every one of her books are always intriguing as well. In Reckless, Whitecroft mixes her writing up yet again within genre, this time opting for the early 1700’s in and around the Caribbean. Jem, a twenty three year old cross-dressing molly, thief, and habitual liar, and Henry, a nineteen year old, sun-kissed, virgin pirate – how much gold is in that sentence? – find each other in the most unusual of circumstances and places. And it works in a rollicking good way, oozing adventure, romance and love. Henry and Jem. Jem and Henry. No matter which way you say their names, this pair have a wonderful chemistry. And, if you care to listen, they have a fantastic tale to tell you as well – 5 Stars!

Good, but, given how much better the other book I'd read by this author was, disappointing. Lots of editing issues, almost to the point that I'm not sure if one was done. Henry was referred to as Harry by the main "villain", is that common? Because I originally thought it was another editing issue. Plus, it was supposed to be historical, but there was a lot of modern speech and no real time appropriate usage. I loved Henry (although I forgot he was supposed to be nineteen constantly) and Jem was an absolute, well, gem! They were very sweet together and I liked that Jem, the much smaller of the two, was never presented as weaker or less.
Mixed bag, that with good editing, could be a wonderful book. Still worth the read.

Everytime I pick up this author's book, she always surprises me with how good each one turns out to be. Even the subject issue that I don't think I'll like (specifically student and teacher.) I love how she makes each character come alive with his/her own unique voice. The author makes me fall in love with Jem from this book just like I have fallen for Toby, Finn, Milos, Rocco, and "Bunny". Really, I decided to stop being surprised anymore. Jess Whitecroft name is an "automatic buy" for me, now.

I really enjoyed this book. It is a good pirate adventure with mutiny, treasure and romance, what else do you need? A well written story with the enigmatic Jem at the centre. Jem and Henry make a great team as Jem is very experienced and Henry knows nothing except the fact that he wants to love women, but does not. It does finish with a HEA but now there is a second book.

I read Reckless when it first came came out and absolutely adored it, but am just leaving a review now after reading the equally wonderful sequel Code Noir.
Reckless is a brilliant story and every time I read it again I find something new to love about it. Jem and Henry are such interesting and great characters that they bring this tale of pirates and adventures truly alive.

Its a good book but it seemed slightly rushed at the end you felt as though that you could of had another chapter that jusped a year or two into the future to inform you how the main characters were doing. However I would recommend this book to you.
