Reckless Jesse Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 117 ratings

In the space of ten years, Jesse Donavon has gone from chart-topping rock star to a thirty-something has-been longing for the roar of the crowd. When he is forced to sell his apartment to avoid bankruptcy, he finds himself needing a place to stay. Unfortunately, no one is too keen to help out the former heartthrob. Well...there is one person.

Robbie O'Carroll isn't like the rest of Jesse's friends. He isn't famous, wealthy, or remotely pretentious. He also happens to be Jesse's number one fan. The lovable goofball worships the ground Jesse walks on, so when the rocker falls on hard times and needs a place to stay, Robbie jumps to his idol's rescue.

Jesse can’t stop wondering if there is more to his young host’s adulation than meets the eye. The more he thinks about it, the more curious he is to see how far Robbie will go to prove his devotion. Jesse coaxes Robbie into sharing his innermost secrets before luring the shy young man into a twisted seduction that tests both their limits. It’s exhilarating and addictive, but if Jesse isn’t careful he might just lose the one thing he has left…a real shot at love.

The title pretty much sums it up.
The story revolves around a really messed up protagonist. Lots of ups and downs in his relationship with Robbie (who is just lovable), and you can't help wishing it will all work out for them.
There are many other complex relationships between Jesse and his son, ex-wife, co-worker etc.
The story is extremely engaging as the dynamics between the characters are constantly changing.

I have read several books by this truly gifted author, and they have all been fantastic!
Loved this story and its flawed, dis-functional, characters.

Menzy gives the reader a tale featuring Jesse, former front man for rock band (reference the title) who has fallen on bad times, and Robbie, a younger mechanic who claims to be Jesse's biggest fan. For the first two-thirds of the book, Jesse comes across as an arrogant womanizer, living in the past, using and abusing his circle. The straight-to-gay trope triggers some intriguing about-faces as well as graphic physicality. There are supporting cast members from his family and work colleagues, some of whom fit into the bad guy roles. Enough humor to get through the cringe worthy sections, but the MCs never really grabbed me.

I have read all his books. I really liked them all except for Candy (part 2, well the ending definitely) His stories move well and he is a good story writer. Most of the author's main characters are flawed, the plots are not happy peppy and situations can get um bit intense. He uses a range of emotions not just safe emotionsBut I like that how realization or growth happens in his books. I recommend this book and his others.

After reading Game Night, I wondered if Menzy could do it again, but with this work he does it even better. The story and character developments are over-the top extraordinary and the story line is beyond entertaining.

I best enjoyed the 'alpha' Jesse and his scenes but respect character evolution, growth, and realization.

This is my 4th Menzy work, I plan to read all his others...right now.

Reckless Jesse is a WOW !!!

Jesse has squandered a career that given him more than most and he is down on his luck and staying with Robbie, his number one fan. What is interesting here is that Jesse had retained something quite valuable in Robbie, who was willing to stick by him even after the glitter wore off. Jesse didn't think himself gay but he finds out that thoughts can change. He does start to evolve over the course of the story as he comes to care for Robbie in a way that he didn't anticipate.

This is an intense, dark and unpredictable story. Jesse is a has been rock star who ives his life he's still "all that", and he treats his "number one fan" best friend, Robbie, like crap. His son, Finn, thinks he's a tool and doesn't care to spend time with Jesse. Robbie has had a thing for Jesse for years and allows Jesse to treat him badly because he's Jesse. One day Jesse is feeling frustrated with his life, so he decides to tease Robbie about being into him. They end up doing more than just fooling around. Jesse gets off on the power trip, and starts demanding more from Robbie. Jesse thinks that his his son is gay, and he starts to question his feelings, and how he feels about what he's doing with Robbie. There are some shocks that he has to deal with, and karma might just come bite him in his butt. I loved the storyline, it's intriging and suspenseful.

I really tried to get through this book, however I could not get past the continuous page after page after page of I'm the best, I'm the greatest, without me you all are no one syndrome! Jesse is so stuck on himself that their is no room for any other character inner actions. Maybe if I had read an additional 50 or more page things might have changed. But at almost 40% I just could not handle Jesse any more! I thank my lucky stars I had KU. This was my first book by this Author, I will give the benefit of the doubt and try another book.

I love stories where the main character starts out as a self-avowed jerk and evolves into a loving sweetheart before your eyes. I wasn’t sure about Jessie at first, but he truly became the man Robbie deserved and the father his son Finn was lacking.

    Highly recommend!

5.0 out of 5 stars ZM’s a ninja at penning these slightly twisted guys that I can’t help rooting for ;)
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 25, 2019
Firstly, I tend to avoid rockstar romance like the plague, but I’m a huge fan of the author, so one-clicking this was a no-brainer, also, it wasn’t at all your typical tropey rockstar nonsense, as the titular character was an almost-famous rocker in his twenties, but now - aged thirty-four, divorced, and father to seventeen year old Finn - he eagerly clings to that fifteen minutes of fame he enjoyed a decade earlier, while currently stuck in a soul-sucking job and on the verge of bankruptcy, and ultimately forced to live with his friend and one-time groupie, Robbie, due to his precarious situation.

On the surface Jesse’s a narcissistic ho whose primary concerns are his own aesthetics, reliving his glory days and screwing without committing. He definitely behaves like a tool for much of the narrative, and both his over-inflated ego and crappy way of treating Robbie made me wanna throttle him, but beneath all that peacocking and posturing actually lies a warm and loving person. The character progression reveals a vulnerability and almost sadness to Jesse that made him much more complicated than I first realised, and his fears, regrets and frustration at being what he deems a failure, is not only what makes him behave so obnoxiously but also what prevents him from accepting who he is now.

While his VIP friends have all but abandoned Jesse due to his lack of fame and fortune, Robbie’s the one person who consistently supports and champions him no matter what, and yet their friendship is dismissed as almost meaningless by Jesse, purely because Robbie’s what he considers a dork and not his equal. Wrong. He’s the sweetest and most forgiving man, and the two nevertheless potter along comfortably until the combination of a drunken hook-up and Jesse’s subsequent cowardice in acknowledging his attraction toward his best mate, rapidly sees the friendship suffer. And as the sexual explorations increase and evolve, so too does their relationship dynamics become painfully skewed.

There’s no real kink to speak of, but jeeeeeeezis, the sex and smut-talk is unapologetically rough and dirty and downright combustible, with a truck-load of humiliation and submission just for good measure. And while the roughhousing certainly works for them, the friendship gets progressively worse when Jesse goes a step too far and almost ruins their entire relationship. Luckily, a brush with an equally twisted type gives Jesse the wake-up call needed to make him see what he almost lost. This not only opens up the first real lines of communication between the guys, letting them finally acknowledge and confess their feelings for one another, but it also triggers an epiphany of sorts for Jesse, who discovers a preference for submitting to his man rather than the dominant role he initially assumes.

There’s a sweet and very promising conclusion for this not-quite-odd-couple, as well as a neat little twist that wasn’t immediately obvious - at least, not to me - but that I kinda guessed by around the third unanswered call. And while I loved (and loathed….jobsworth Brodie..ugh) the main and secondary characters, and naturally the central romance between Jesse and Robbie, this is primarily the former’s story, and about his sexual awakening, self-acceptance, and eventual redemption, as he wasn’t a bad guy but just someone who’d taken a few knocks and lost his direction, which for me, made him all the more human, real, and ultimately lovable.

And while Jesse’s actions and the leads’ relationship were often admittedly messed up, there’s still enough romantic and familial love present to make this a well-balanced tale, imo. There’s no fluff or jaw-aching sweetness, but it’s still a fair bit lighter than the majority of the author’s books – which can get pretty brutal! And the dialogue, humour and snark is every bit as earthy and realistic as I’ve come to expect from this author.

I have to mention how much I loved Jesse’s relationship with his ex-wife, Kylie. It wasn’t perfect, far from it, but it was very believable, and refreshing to witness such a genuine friendship between exes and to see them still so supportive of one another years after they’d split. And their bantering was some of the funniest lines in the book for me.

In short, this is another five star keeper for me. It’s a well-written tale (a few typos and grammatical errors, but nothing that detracts from the story, imo) with a little of everything that I love, although I will suggest that if you’re easily shocked and offended, you might wanna skip it, otherwise, this comes highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Would have been 5 stars, but..........

The review by Beanie persuaded me to read this one as I have a bit of a like/dislike thing going on with the books by this author. I remember really liking Edge of Deceit, although it has been a while since I read it and will need to go back for a re-read. Curious Candy was a bit of a strange one for me and I did try to get into book two of that series but gave up after a few pages, finding it a bit too much. This one though I was enjoying, until I didn't.
Jesse was a lot of things. Bitter, self-centred, lazy, selfish, mean and insecure, to name but a few. But Robbie loved him anyway and saw things in him that nobody else seemed to. As this was told from Jesse's POV it was his thoughts and feelings that are followed and even though he was all those things and more, I still kind of liked him. Robbie was just gorgeous and the best thing to have happened to Jesse, though it took him a long time to realise this blindingly obvious fact and treated Robbie really badly for the majority of the book, so be prepared.
It dropped a star for me when another player, 18 year old Evan was introduced into the mix. I don't want to leave any spoilers but will say that photos were involved, and while it was in line with Jesse's character, I didn't like the way the storyline went. All I could think was what on earth was this 35yr old man doing with this kid (who was only slightly older than his own son) and that he should have had more sense. I found the resolution to the whole situation to be a bit daft honestly and would have liked it to play out differently but continue with the same style as the rest of the book. I was happy with the ending and liked the added twist.
I will continue to look out for more by this author but was a little disappointed by parts of this one.
Still, recommended for those who like things to get dark and dirty.
