4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 353 ratings

Her next case. She's in it for good.

Just months after solving her first case, Isabel Long is in a funk. Her relationship with the Rooster Bar's owner is over. Then the cops insist she must work for a licensed P.I. before going solo.

Encouraged by her 'Watson' - her 92-year-old mother - Isabel snaps out of it by hooking up with a P.I. and finding a new case. But it's not at all clear-cut.

The official ruling is Chet Waters, an ornery so-and-so, was passed out when his house caught fire. His daughter, who inherited his junkyard, believes he was murdered. Topping the list of suspects are dangerous drug-dealing brothers, a rival junkyard owner, and an ex-husband.

Could Waters' death simply be a case of redneck's revenge? Isabel is about to find out.

Editorial Reviews

Review

The second book in the Isabel Long Mystery Series bounces along with humor, plot twists, colorful voices and rich character development. Redneck's Revenge is also a human story, a well-crafted tale of small town secrets, complicated relationships, life changes and lies. A romantic storyline adds spice and warmth to this cozy mystery.

Set in the frozen Northeast, author Joan Livingston's spellbinding descriptions of small town America and classic Yankee characters weave humor and a love story with murder. The story sweeps us along and there are enough plot twists and turns in this deftly written work to satisfy the most hard-core mystery fan. A great choice.

I particularly like Joan Livingston's folksy, no frills style. I think that's a nod to her years as a newspaper editor (something her main character, Isabel shares with her). The characters are colorful and entertaining. It is almost as if I know them somehow, and you will too.

Easy to follow stand-alone. No editing errors, gratuitous violence or drag-you-down drama.

Compelling series with descriptive writing that draws the reader into each scene. Plenty of twists and suspects to keep the reader interest. Flexible procedures, actions and reactions. Believable dialogue and characters with distinct personalities.

No desire to re-read this story. I am interested in other works by this author.

It was a fun, silly story. The ending was not expected.

Not having read the first book in the series, this one had enough back story to set the scene of this book without having to go back to read it. The characters are fun to watch interact and there’s enough meat to the story to keep you guessing almost to the end. I enjoyed it enough to read the rest of the series and will watch for any more as they’re published.

I really like this series. Isabel is a smart woman, a widow who is trying a new career after being let go at the newspaper where she'd worked for 28 years. But this "private eye" stuff isn't exactly what she thought it would be. To say that she's out of her depth is putting it mildly!
Isabel takes another case that is a cold case....a man was found dead in a fire, but no one thinks it was anything but an accident except for his daughter. The list of suspects isn't too long, but they are real characters! Rednecks through and through.
On top of that, she has 2 men interested in her....and she's not been on the dating scene for too many years.
Isabel is a genuine woman, very likeable. The plot was was written, and well thought out. Looking forward to the next book in the series!

I will be reading more books in this series. Great story of co!d crime solving. Fun to follow main characters as they grow into their new roles in life.

Isabel has her second case. She is hired to prove that a man who died in a house fire did not get drunk and set the fire. Everyone in town believes this is what happened. Annette, his daughter, seems sure this is not what happened. Follow Isabel and her partner in crime as they get into another investigation, one that could be deadly.

I loved this second book in the series.

This is a stand-alone book but I’m glad I read book one so that I had some background but I have to say I hated the way book One ended.

This installment was fun, clever, sad, happy, slow, fast, you name it.

Isabel has a quick wit, smart aleck attitude, gets herself into some sort of unbelievable situations but in the end the author wraps up everything nice and neat.

I can’t wait to borrow book three from Kindle Unlimited I hope I can get it that way!

Highly recommend! I didn’t know that Massachusetts had rednecks!

Solid mystery with interesting characters. Isabel is a sixty something ex-journalist investigating murders in small towns. This one is about a woman’s father’s death ruled accidental by police.

Redneck’s Revenge is a novel that will stay with you for a long time. Well, it will with me because I rank it up there with Fanny Flagg’s “Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café”, one of my favourite books, and that’s not because “Redneck’s Revenge” is set in a café or that there’s any sign of green tomatoes, hell, it’s not even the same genre. It’s because of the author’s brilliant voice, the way she lets the characters jump off the page: they’re so real, quirky and unforgettable. You have rednecks galore (I hope that’s not pejorative because I adored reading about the folk of the small hilltop towns in Massachusetts – the Old Farts, the junkyard owners, the bar owners…so many) but my favourite is Isabel Long herself – a sassy, adorable, down-to-earth but take-no-prisoners type of gal (see? I picked up the lingo) who has a mother as wise and courageous as Isabel.
I was immersed in the setting, which comes alive with the characters and as the story continues. The ending was a surprise, although I did pick up a hint of it earlier in the story, but dismissed it. Very clever plot.
Joan Livingston is a professional journalist and this shows in her excellent style of writing. She’s a born fiction writer and I dearly look forward to the next Isabel Long case.

Once again, Isabel Long is on the case. After the adventures in the first book in the series, Chasing the Case, Isabel is working with an established Private Investigator and taking on a new case from a woman who believes her father's death in a house fire was murder, not a simple accident as concluded by the police three years earlier. With things cooling with Jack, Isabel is up for the distraction of her new work activities and takes on the case with her 92 year old (nearly 93 year old!) mother on board as her 'Watson', Isabel searches for the truth, which uncovers a range of hidden town secrets. Like the first book, the central mystery is a cracker with lots of suspects and interesting secrets she unravels. I always love the chemistry between Isabel and Jack, and enjoyed the complications of their romance. A fabulous read with a great lead, fabulous supporting characters and baffling mystery.

This time it felt like Isabel put herself in a whole lot more danger and there were times that I was concerned that there may not be a third book in the series if she kept taking such risks! It's a fast paced read with lots of action, clues and little bursts of humour. And it was great to see my favourite sleuth 'Ma' back in top form. Looking forward to the next book already.
