Revelations: Fire & Brimstone Scroll 1—Gay Paranormal Romance (Fire & Brimstone Scrolls) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 1,068 ratings

Riley thought he knew what to expect from college, but he never planned for angels, demons, or a team of attractive, overprotective Guardians.

When one fateful night opens his eyes to a world he never knew existed, Riley Shepard must navigate a host of supernatural dangers, all while struggling with new and confusing feelings for his guardian angels. With the promise of friends, family, and freedom finally within his grasp, he fears not only for his heart but for his life as well.

Lucky for him, some things are worth dying for.

***Revelations is the first book in the slow-burn M/M+ romance series, Fire & Brimstone, featuring hurt/comfort, swoon-worthy guardian angels, sexual awakening, and an unlikely hero, too innocent for his own good. Trigger warnings include: situations of homophobia (both external and internal), past child abuse, self-harm, mental health, and one instance (Prologue) of non-graphic sexual assault.***

This was an amazing book that I couldn't put down. The storyline was amazing and different than anything I've read about.

Revelations is the first book in the Fire & Brimstone series and really set the scene for the entire series. The world Riley, the main character, lives in is a familiar world – it resembles the current contemporary world as the reader might know it—but soon odd things start happening and it becomes clear that this familiar world has a surprising secret: angels and demons are real…and not just in the religious sense. Riley, a young man who’s been beaten down by the world, has his own triad of guardian angels. At first, it’s not clear why Riley might need such protection, but by the end of the book it becomes crystal clear that there are secrets within secrets when it comes to Riley and his past.

I enjoyed this book, especially the worldbuilding aspect of it. I thought the structure of heaven and hell was interesting and really added a dynamic layer to the plot. The relationship between Riley and his angels is definitely going to be a slowburn, but the build up of this attraction is delicious sweet despite the slowness. There were moments where I thought the character’s behaviors were a bit strange for how they were previously characterized, but overall I thought they were well written and interesting. This is definitely a series I will be continuing – I know it’s going to be a wild and exciting ride!

The audiobook was narrated by Kirt Graves who did a fantastic job. Kirt has such a smooth voice that fit each main character perfectly. The audiobook production was also well done and it made for a really enjoyable listening experience.

Honestly, I didn't have high hopes for this book but man was I BLOWN AWAY. First, the nitty gritty: Yes, there are a few grammar/spelling errors in the SERIES, but that's spanning SIX BOOKS, so that's completely understandable. Second: LOVED IT. All of it. Every book. Every character (even the ones that don't get much development). Every plot line. Will this be every one's cup of tea? No, as other reviewers have pointed out things they don't like. But for me? I love our four main characters. Riley's growth. Noel's trauma and healing. Jai's tough exterior but soft spot for those he loves. And Gideon... Giddy learning to love and be loved. The fact that I can remember their names speaks to how much I love this series.

    The only bad part?

    That it ended.

REVELATIONS was a mixed bag for me. I liked the world building and the set up of the angelic politics, Riley's Guardians, and the mystery around why Riley has guardian angels to begin with. I also liked Riley as a character, I know a lot of other reviewers found him whiny and annoying but his actions perfectly match what I would expect out of a 19 year old on his own for the first time after growing up with an abusive foster mom who brainwashed him into believing he was an impure, "dirty" person who needed to be punished. He has a lot of internalized shame to work through and he's not the typical "hero" but it would be interesting to see him find his confidence and his place in life.

What fell apart for me was Riley's Guardians: Jai, Noel, and Gideon. Jai and Noel are several centuries old yet they acted like immature college kids most of the time. And while Gideon is supposed to be the more serious, stable force as the leader of the trio, he also felt surprisingly inexperienced with life and he seemed to get embarrassed or flustered really easily. When it came to the relationship between Riley and his guardians, I was a bit uncomfortable with how things were being portrayed. I love sweet, gentle, and cuddly characters a lot but the way the Guardians treated Riley, especially Noel, was too child-like. They've watched him grow up, they were his "imaginary" friends when Riley was a kid, and they've essentially taken on a parental caretaking role. Now that Riley is an adult, Jai and Noel's feelings are obviously changing but they're still acting in ways a parent would -- holding him, carrying him around like a kid, covering his ears when someone says something mean, etc. It just felt awkward, especially because Riley is painfully unaware when it comes to intimacy and romance so he believes all the spooning, sleeping together, cuddling, hand holding, etc are just because they're good friends and not because Jai and Noel are attracted to him.

While I want to know more about Riley's background and see more of the angel vs demon battle that is surely coming, I don't think I can get past the squick factor of the relationship so I don't plan to continue this series.

It's an really awesome book, very well written, I love a nice fantasy story but this one is different : it shows you how a polyamourous relationship works, it's interesting, it touches a lot of different subjects (abuse, anxiety, gaining confidence, first times etc) I love it, it's so sweet and your holding your breath througout the entire story, the author keeps you on the edge of your seat, cannot wait to read the rest of the serie !

I'd been waiting for the series to be completed before I started it and I'm so glad I did. This is the kind of series you want to binge read. Riley, Noel, Jai and Gideon are all unique and wonderful and I can't wait to read more of their story. On to book 2!

I discovered this series by complete chance, having come across them while looking for inspiration on what to read next. So on a whim, I had a quick look, thought they looked good and decided to chance my arm....Well. I am SO GLAD I did!! :D

The story follows Riley Shepard, a nineteen year old college student struggling with shyness, social anxiety and a roommate determined to make his life a living hell, not to mention flashbacks of a controlling foster mother who has conditioned him into thinking that if he strays off his path, he is an evil, wicked boy. So, when he starts seeing these gorgeous men around campus, he just thinks it's another one of his strange moments.

However all that changes when Riley is cornered by a man that is definitely not human and is promptly saved by these two ethereally beautiful men, who turn out to be angels sworn to protect him. His own personal Guardian Angels.

It is an absolute delight to read, but there are moments that are may be a little difficult to read, but in this, as well as in the other ones, the author has put trigger warnings at the front.

Character wise....well....what can I say?! All her characters are multi-faceted, with distinct personalities and hidden depths. I can safely say I'm looking forward to discovering more about Riley and his angels as the series progresses, considering that I'm reviewing this without actually finishing the first book. (A mark of an excellent book in my opinion!!)

Ok, so Riley himself...oh my god, I just want to give the poor boy a hug and make sure everyone that is mean to him has their just desserts!! He's a very sweet, innocent, lovable character, and the portrayal of anxiety and social awkwardness is spot on, you really feel for him, struggling to navigate his way through a world.

As for the angels, I love all of them!!!! That kind of ethereal hotness in characters should be outlawed! (Just kidding!!) However, if someone twisted my arm, I would have to pick Noel (at the moment anyway) as my favourite angel, as he is just adorable, he's the mellow one out of the group, who is as sassy as he is sweet and his exchanges with Jairus and Gideon are really funny. He is the Light Other to Jai, so he has white hair, nearly colourless eyes and tends to wear white or pastel colours in his clothes, as well as having white wings and white swords when he is using his angelic powers.

Speaking of Jairus, (or Jai as he is known) is the Dark Other, so he has black hair, dark skin, is basically a biker bad boy with his leather clothes and motorbike and has black wings and black swords when using his angelic powers. Out of the three, Jai is the one with the temper, who helps fuel Riley's confidence, but despite his temper, he has a sweet side that is really lovely to see.

Last but not least, we have Gideon, the leader of the little trio, who has golden wings, gold swords and as Riley says himself, is like a Greek God in his appearance. Despite that, he is actually pretty stand-offish to start with, as he is the responsible one, not wanting to mix his job (protecting Riley) and his life by becoming friends with their charge. However, there are real moments of tenderness between him and Riley that show a softer side to the facade, that show underneath his almost robotic nature, he is very caring; which is lovely to see.

You can really get the sense of how much the angels care for Riley, becoming like his second family, but there are moments when the tension between them are so sharp you could cut it with a knife!!

I love this kind of urban, romantic fantasy, love the little references to culture (such as Riley showing Noel and Jai how to play Legend of Zelda and Jai and Noel arguing over what movies to watch as a movie marathon being a highlight) and the banter between the characters makes you laugh out loud.

    Pros:
Cute main character with a loveable personality.
Three super hot, protective angels with distinct personalities who love Riley so much my heart just melts.
    Super interesting plot.

    Cons:
I genuinely have nothing bad to say about it at all!! Apart from that, I have discovered hitherto unknown recesses of complete rage whenever anyone is horrible to Riley or whenever Ms Janet or Brian (the bully at campus) are mentioned or in the scene, as I just want them all to go to hell! Literally!!!!

Oh, and one more thing, expect to stay up late reading this series, it's compulsive!! I've certainly found I want to keep reading it all the time, although I kinda also don't so I don't finish it quickly! :D

A million points out of ten!!! :)

Did it make you cry like a baby? This will too. I went into this book not really knowing what to expect, having only read the collaboration Nikole Knight had done with Lily Mayne. Since I've read every book Lily Mayne has written, and loved them all, including the Collab, I thought to give this a try.
And holy wow, was I beyond pleasantly surprised. This was such a deep, intimate novel with a compassionate portrayal of someone trying to grapple with the difference between the way he's been forced to see himself, and the way the world IS.
I'm sure I'll have a lot more to say as I continue through the series, but if you're thinking about reading this, read it.
