Getting Book Reviews: Easy, Ethical Strategies for Authors (Writer's Craft) Kindle Edition
When browsing online for their next read, most readers are drawn to the books with many reviews. More and more readers glance at what other readers have to say about a book before they hit the 'buy now' button. The more people have read and liked the book, the more they want to experience it for themselves. This is a known psychological factor called 'social evidence', and it plays a big role in purchasing decisions.
The more reviews your book has, the better, especially if they are genuine, personal, thoughtful and positive. Reviews can multiply your sales and catapult your book to the top of bestseller lists - but how do you get them?
Perhaps you're a new author and can't get those crucial early reviews to start the train rolling. Maybe you're a seasoned author and your books have garnered reviews, but not as many as you need to break out. Or perhaps you've gone the corporate publishing route, and find that your publisher's publicist isn't getting your book the attention it needs.
This book shows you many proven strategies to get the reviews your book deserves. Instead of urging you to labour through tedious, spirit-draining procedures, I'll reveal quick, fun, empowering tricks.
All my suggestions are legitimate and ethical. In this book you won't find methods for manipulating, faking and cheating. Strengthen your readers' bond with you, don't sabotage it.
Most of the methods I suggest are free, although some incur expenses. You will definitely need to spend time. You can apply them all these techniques, or cherry-pick the ones you like now and keep the rest for another time or a different book.
At the end of most chapters, I'm sharing mistakes I made and learnt from. They all seemed a good idea at the time.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2018As an indie author, I’ve had trouble getting reviews for my books and stories. And I’ve spent lots of time beating myself up about it, too. But Rayne Hall’s Getting Book Reviews: Easy, Ethical Strategies for Authors gave me lots of ideas of how to proceed in the future. I found the first and the last chapters especially helpful. Even before I read this entry in Ms. Hall’s Writer’s Craft series, I’ve added little notes at the end of my pubs encouraging readers to review the work they’ve just read. But now I plan on lengthening the letter to include a request for readers to email me in case they noted any typos in addition to asking for reviews. In the last chapter, sixteen authors writing and publishing in various genres present what methods have helped them get reviews. It cheered me up to find out that getting reviews isn’t just hard for me. Most indie authors have to work hard at it, but with persistence and resourcefulness they succeed. So I highly recommend this book to all of you indie authors out there who want reviews.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2018I find it is always best to learn from the mistakes of others. Author Rayne Hall has generously shared her knowledge (as well as her missteps) in an easy-to-read book that will help to set writers on a path that should help them to steer clear of many of the self-publishing hazards when seeking book reviews. The advice in this book is beneficial to writers of both fiction and non-fiction.
While there are many viewpoints on garnering reviews, Ms. Hall recognizes that not every method will work for all writers. Her book offers a fair look at the different ideas, presenting the positive and negative sides of each. For newer writers or those who wish to gain a solid overview of the book review challenges, “Getting Book Reviews” is a solid entry into the field.
Having been on the “reviewer” side of the aisle for about four years, I admire Ms. Hall’s chapters addressing how to react to negative reviews. Viewing the positive aspects of these reviews, to me, reflects the attitude of a mature author, one who recognizes the pitfalls of self-publishing and is more than ready to make an omelet when the basket of eggs gets dropped by a reviewer. Chapter 19 (Funny Negative Book Reviews) may help you to put everything into perspective.
The book concludes with other authors providing their experiences in the realm of accumulating book reviews, and the additional viewpoints are helpful. Although the book is slightly dated (published 2-1/2 years ago, almost a lifetime in the changing world of the Internet!), there are more than enough nuggets of knowledge contained within its pages. Recommended for newer authors or any writers struggling to achieve an important part of publishing today, getting more reviews. Four stars.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2015this is the third book of rayne hall's that i've read. and just like the two previous ones, this is very helpful and informative. rayne doesn't skimp on tips and advice, mostly from her own experience as an author. i'm a newbie indie author myself and just like her, i had pitfalls and strategies that didn't work. with this book, she lists all the strategies that a new writer can use to get reviews. my favorite tip is asking for honest reviews in exchange of free review copies. i've done it already in twitter and facebook. some people in facebook already asked for a copy (none from twitter though). now i will just have to convert my docs to pdf, epub and mobi (just like rayne suggested) and email them.
also, as what i've pointed out in my two other reviews of her books, rayne gives all the tips one author needs, but she also reiterates that it involves a lot of work. i'm very thankful but also very scared of the daunting task ahead - of promoting and getting your book noticed. but one has to soldier on if one wants to succeed.
thanks for your books.
now, on to the next (i bought seven books of rayne's :)
- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2022Hall reminds us that writing is a long-term game, no matter which strategy or strategies you choose.
She wisely espouses that it is a process, not a goal. That writing reviews and networking is a language, not a checklist.
She has plenty of delicious honesty about mistakes she’s made. Some of her problems and mine were equal-yet-opposite, which just goes to show, yet again, how every author’s experience is different.
Although her advice is, like anybody's advice, subject to change, my questions were answered, including ones that I didn’t have before opening the book. This includes important rules and warnings about what certain platforms will and won’t allow.

5.0 out of 5 stars One never stops learning...
The Writer's Craft series by Rayne Hall has helped author's find their footing in the all too complex world of writing and marketing their books.
Even a 'seasoned' author will benefit from sound advice. Her suggestions on how to get reviews for your book had some great ideas for writer's of all genres.
For example, one strategy I appreciated was for series authors. Ms. Hall suggested offering an ebook review copy (free) to a reader who has completed a review. A simple explanation on how to do it legally and ethically and effectively is provided. Rayne outlines various methods with advantages and disadvantages so the author can find what best works for them. Her generousity in 'Mistakes I made and learnt from' is honest and helpful.
The section on how a negative review can generate sales can take the sting out of an honest, negative reviewers POV. I also enjoy Chapter 19: Funny Negative Book Reviews. It was easy to relate to, we are all partner to negative reviewers and trolls.
This book is a must read for any author looking to generate reviews for their work.

Loved the simplicity and breakdown of the chapters
Loved the humanness and humility of the author sharing her mistakes
It's the kind of book that leaves you recalling most of the content after reading it
And now I am going to read the next one...

5.0 out of 5 stars Advice for Indie Authors
Getting Book Reviews is a book most suitable for Indie writers although there are some tips for published writers too. Rayne reminds the reader that reviews help sell books and with more people using online book shops for their purchases it is very noticeable that readers are drawn to the books with many reviews. She explains that this is a basic psychological buying factor, people are attracted to what others have and they too want to share the experience.
There then follows easy to read chapters with proven achievable strategies about how to get reviews. These include simple ideas like a polite paragraph at the end of your book asking readers to write a review, using your fans and followers, and asking your beta readers to write a review.
There are also chapters on the muddier waters of review swaps, review circles and paying for reviews. My favourite chapters were the "Approaching a book blogger", as a book blogger I appreciate an author who is considerate and takes an interest in my blog and stays interested after my review. My other pick would be the "Ways to send a book to reviewers" I am astonished by the number of authors who approach me for a review with only a PDF or Word Document of their story.
I enjoys Rayne's writer's craft books because of their simple easy to use advice and common sense and I often recommend them to authors when I feel the advice they offer will be of help.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sehr hilfreicher Ratgeber

5.0 out of 5 stars Clear and to the point
Excellent little book about book reviews and how to get them.
I particularly appreciated the author's decision to stick to ethical methods, and her analysis of costs (in terms of time and money) and benefits for each review channel described.
While I'm not sure whether some of the techniques described would work on the Italian market or not, the contents are certainly inspiring.
