River Home: Shielded Hearts book 5 Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 503 ratings

Wanted: A good home for a stray.

Needed: A worthy man.

Miguel arrived in town a broken man, having barely escaped an abusive relationship with his life. Since then he’s buried his deepest desire for family and taken what life doles out; one-night stands are as close to a relationship as he’s going to get.

Federal Agent Nate Richardson; focused, reliable, career minded. No time for relationships outside work. Nate doesn’t care about sex and doesn’t believe in love. He’s also never met Miguel Ramirez—until now.

Nate is a force Miguel doesn’t foresee; a red-haired officer of the law with a galaxy of freckles splashed across his face, he encompasses everything about relationships Miguel has rejected as out of his reach.

Outside forces drive Nate and Miguel apart, they’ll need to work together to conquer their demons and win the fight for their love.

River Home is a dual POV about a man with a beautiful soul who refuses to be kept down and the stoic federal agent who falls in love with him. One man knows what he wants, the other needs convincing. The Shielded Hearts series follows a different couple in each book as they stop killers, unravel a human trafficking ring and fall in love.

About the Author

Author/imaginator & photographer (also rare Pacific Northwest Native), Elle grew up in Seattle, WA., with the Cascade Mountain range to the east and Olympics to the west.

Elle has between three and five cats, depending on who's counting. She's lived in four states, London England, and Hong Kong; always knows what time it is, and has little problem finding parking even in the most difficult places.

Elle's new series Accidental Roots is set in the Skagit Valley of Western Washington and made its debut spring of 2017. Writing has always been a passion but not something she was able to take seriously until recently. Now her head is full of ideas and not enough time in each day.

Broken, broody, mysterious, swoony, inclusive; those are my tropes.

It’s my grandmother’s fault! Alice Lee bribed me to read with a Nancy Drew box set—and changed my life forever.

Love at first binge read.

By the time high school rolled around I’d already discovered romantic suspense and gothic romance, and I’ve never looked back. What can I say? My love of mystery and suspense started early and runs deep.

Is there anything better than a character who by the end of the story manages to redeem/heal themselves enough to fall in love? No, there isn’t.

Fast forward to 2017 when, with a shaky finger, I pressed the Publish button for the first time. I’ve never regretted it. I love writing and telling stories that others enjoy, it’s a dream come true.

What else? I love both cats and dogs. Star Wars and Star Trek. Pineapple on pizza, and have a cribbage habit my husband encourages. We live in a log cabin near Hood Canal in Washington State, if the sky is clear at night the milky way is visible. But most often I’m inside devouring yet another book!

Another wonderful and exciting as well as thoughtful book in this series!

This one moved me. Both had nothing or anyone to tether themselves to. Just their jobs and although they had friendships in their jobs, neither had someone to love. They had both been hurt by people they loved. Miguel’s ex comes around and is dangerous, Nate realizes he wants to love and protect Miguel if he’d only let him. Miguel doesn’t want his found family hurt and isn’t sure if he can tie himself to Nate. We’ve seen glimpses of Miguel in previous books but this one saw him shine, I loved getting to know him. And blushing, bossy Nate was so sweet. It was great to see him find the confidence in his personal life that he already had in his professional life.

This is a really good series even if I'm reading them kind of out of order. In River Home #5 in the series, Miguel and Nate are like extreme opposites. Miguel is dark complexioned, Nate alabaster white with red fair and freckles. Personality-wise Miguel is a professional flirt while Nate is withdrawn and serious. Where they are alike is in their childhood and adolescent upbringing, Miguel in foster care , Nate in a cold, unloving family. The little town of Skagit is a haven for both men and despite their differences they are drawn to each other and bond, hilariously, over porn movies.
But Miguel's past comes to haunt him in the persona of Justin Oakes, a disgraced police detective who had originally charmed Miguel into believing he loved him, only to use, abuse and dominate Miguel until he ran away - but Justin wants back in Miguel's life, not to love him but to punish him for leaving. What follows is a tense and at times scary part of the story. Thank goodness for the HEA!

Started reading Ella Keaton 'Accidental Root Box Series". Starting with 'Long Shadow'
I just finished book 5 River Home.

Miguel a sweet man who got his own book who's a good friend of Buck his boss at the mechanic shop.

Miguel was in a abusive relationship he escaped from. Going to one town to another he finally found a home in Skagit, Washington.

In chapter one he slept with a guest at his best friend's wedding .
Later after he got busted, he was ashamed so he left the wedding party. Then he met Nate after that .

Kevin and Dom are brothers who work with Buck and Miguel who you meet in early books.

Then later Miguel's ex finds him and all hell break loose
Miguel tells Nate about his last foster parent Mr. Singh who gave him a skill to work on cars instead of stealing them. He showed Miguel what true family was.
When you turn 18 in the foster system there is no where to go. No help No support..

Ella keatons's story tells about mystery, suspense, love story, and family.

Nate never felt loved or accepted toward his father after his mother died while Nate was only 3.
Only Mel his sister cared for him and loved him until he was in junior high.
Secrets exposed close to the ending.
I cried, laugh and wanted to protect Miguel so much.

I really enjoyed all get novels.
Can't wait to read book 6.

    You won't be disappointed.
    See for yourself

Despite waiting for so long to read it, I am a mood reader haha, I was looking forward to Miguel's story. It promised angst, emotional crisis and so many feels. Unfortunately the story felt short for me. I liked both MCs, Miguel and Nate, but everything between them felt tepid. I expected more. The ex angle was undeveloped and the entire case that Nate supposedly worked on was sidelined so much that I wondered why it was even there. I did like the small town mentality and Buck's strong presence since he was partly the driving force when it came to two men coming together in the end. I hate when MCs assume a lot, do not talk and decide each on their own who is to blame and just do nothing to resolve the issues between them. This was the case here and it grated on my nerves. I also felt that the issue with Nate's family was left unresolved and was introduced in sort of by the way fashion. I wanted closure for him and myself. Overall, the story was not bad. It was a bit slow going, low steam and low suspense. I wish Nate and Miguel had more between them, it would have made the story better for me.

Federal Agent one can see miles away Agent Nate Richardson is married to his job and loves it. He left his dysfunctional family on opposite coast. He working with Adam Klay so prior characters come into play in the book. All books are stand alone book in the series they are great. Hate not been in relationships and really makes no time since a case can mean no time for them or his home. Until Miguel the one that catches his eye. Miguel is a no strings attached but Hate is trying to test that resolve. Cases heat up - human trafficking. Miguel is battling demons from the past. Both collide. M/M romance V3S2 more book reviews and my opinion and authors, followers please check out @my2centsbooklover. Thank you!

Miguel and Nate are solid. I love how Buck and Adam, and a little Weir and Joey help out the story development. I am not huge on crazy ex stalkers but that part didn’t take too many pages.

4.0 out of 5 stars Miguel and Nate
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 4, 2018
After a slow start , where I almost gave up I really enjoyed this book.
Miguel was funny and he was the draw that kept me hooked.
Mate was laid back and innocent. He never had a relationship but he wanted one with Miguel.
It was hard for him to trust as he was still looking over his shoulder for his crazy ex. Getting involved with another cop was not in his plan.
It would take a whole lot of love and, patience to change his mind.
Really good writing and keep on the edge read.
