You can't love, work
4 out of 5 stars
You can't love, work
In Sadie's world, there are class divisions and restrictions on everything. You can't love, work, or go to school without the government's approval and grace. So when the opportunity comes up for her to join an underwater colony experiment, she jumps at the chance to change her life. Little does she know that this experiement is one more way for the government to control and harness her class. The world Sadie lives in seems very realistic in our future. With population overcrowding and the government trying to step in and "save" the people, Davis does a good job with making the setting of Saven very real and possible. So when Sadie decides to change herself and her future by making her own choices as to who she is and what she wants, I find myself relating to her in a real way. She tries her best to become this new person, or let the real person inside of her slip out, but at times slips back into who she was and who the world expects of her. As I'm moving to a new place, I tell myself the same things. I can be whoever I want and fight for control of my own life. Reading is a great way to find the inspiration to do what you want and share in the experiences of others who succeed, and fail at their choices. Saven Deception is a good book for finding those heroes to look up to as your fighting for control. While I absolutely love Young Adult fiction and love stories, sometimes I have a hard time with the love at first sight addiction authors feel. I can understand the love forever and such, but love at first sight? I have a hard time with this, and Sadie and Logan's love is a bit unreal in this matter. But I guess that's why we read YA fiction sometimes, for the unreal love and suprises. I guess when you fall in love with an alien, you should expect a little unreal and forever. And this love story gives you it all, and with all the drama of rebellions, new choices, and drama all around. The hardest part of this whole book was the ending. It was so sudden, so out of the blue, and so unexplained. I feel like Davis was trying to move the story along when it got a little stuck, and decided to do it in a big way. But the "big way" was so unexpected that it didn't really make any sense with the story and then she just ended the book. I know there are several other books and from the start of the next one, there is a little bit of explanation, but not enough yet to make any sense of what happened at the end of Saven Deception. The collapse of the underwater colony makes no sense other than to move the story along and on to the next book. I admit with all the craziness in this book, I really enjoyed Saven Deception. There were a few parts that were a little unreal and crazy, but if you can suspend through that, this book is great for those who love the Lux series or other alien romances. I will definitely continue on with this series and have already started book 2.

Hi began reading this author with her Tru Calling series. I love the young adult romance but not necessarily the sci-fi theme. Siobhan has made me a lover of that now.
I did find it difficult in the very beginning of the book to follow, just because there was world building, character building, but I had no idea why the world was the way it was. However, I feel that that worked in my favor because it allowed me to be surprised as the plot developed. Once that happened, I finished the book in a very short period of time, I just couldn't put it down! The writing is so well-done that it transports you to that world, putting you in place of the characters. It's truly captivating and extremely enjoyable, and leaves you wanting more.

I fell in love with Sadie, and even watched her character developed into somebody stronger during the story, and this is just the first book! While I'm very interested in her and Logan and how the relationship will develop, I also find myself invested in secondary characters, and that doesn't happen often in a book. These characters paid such intricate rolls and woven so well with your main characters that it's almost like a second story within the story.

The romance is sweet, has its own ups and downs, but romance is always my favorite part of the book and I got plenty in Saven Deception. I embraced the Eterno connection. It makes the romance more intense! However, romance isn't all this book is about. There is corrupt governments, aliens living among them without knowing, mystery and intrigue and keeps you wondering what is going to happen next.

I love that Siobhan does not leave her books with huge cliffhangers. I will come back and read any additional books in the series if the series is written well. I'm not a big fan of cliffhangers that leave you waiting with characters hanging in the balance. I also appreciate that I do not have to wait for a year to find out what's going on in the story. This makes to Siobhan one of my favorite writers , not just because her books are wonderful and creative and romantic but also because she respects her readers enough to work hard on getting her books out in a reasonable amount of time.

I'm very excited about seeing what happens in the second book, and how these characters continue to develop and change their world with the surprises, and plot twists I can't begin to imagine what will happen next . I give my highest recommendation, not only the Saven series, but the Tru Calling series. If you haven't read that series yet, I suggest you buy that now and read it while you're waiting on the next book to come out in the series. You won't be disappointed!

Set in a dystopian future Earth where society has been separated into 3 classes: Bullions (the elite), Coins (the middle-class), and the lowest level or Stars and segregated into living sectors by class centered around a core city, author Siobhan Davis has built a grim, hopeless, and wearing life for story protagonist, 18 year old Sadie Owens.

When offered a way out of her miserable life and horrible home situation through selection to participate in a government-sponsored experimental program, Sadie jumps at the chance. “The Experimento” is the creation and development of new underwater cities that are expected to ease massive overpopulation issues that exist on the surface. Sadie and her fellow program participants have been recruited as study subjects to see how, and if, humans can successfully adapt to a life lived in these cities under the ocean.

With much young adult romantic drama and the slow unfolding of secret government agendas, the story moves forward at an exciting pace with something always going on. There is foreshadowing of secrets yet-to-be-revealed, hopefully in the succeeding novels of the Saven series. I’m so on board for the next installments!

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I don't know what to say about this book that would do it justice. I thought that Siobhan wowed me with her True Calling series, but this one has me so sucked in and I didn't want to come up for air.

You have suspense, Dystopia, sci-fi, romance, and friendship all wrapped into one. Most books that try to put so much in one book just cannot pull it off, but Siobhan did it with ease. I was able to follow through the book without having to question anything. It all made sense as I was reading. Even all the Alien things that pop up don't have anything to me that didn't make sense. I felt like I was right there with the characters.

As I was reading, I had my own personal movie playing in my head. I was able to swoon and drool over Logan the whole time. I felt a deep pull towards Logan and could stare at him just like Sadie. He has so much mystery to his character yet so much sweetness at the same time. I can't wait to learn more about him and see how his character progresses.

Sadie is a very strong willed character. You know she goes through so much at her old home and you can see her come out into a brand new person once she can get out and breath. She starts to come out of her shell in a wonderful way. Most female leads are annoying and whiny, but she is anything but.

I found myself so connected to each and everyone one of the characters in some way. I felt their emotions just as they did. Even Dante who I couldn't stand seems to be have a hidden personality that I want to get to know.

I don't know how Siobhan can write with such a flow, but she has easily stolen my first place spot for Favorite Author. Her characters have depth, her worlds have such detail, and the ideas just make sense. The length of the book would usually make me worried about the slowness of it, but she doesn't have any of that. From the second you start reading you are drawn into the book and keep going until the last page. I read this book in between moving and I did all that I could to try to even get a page in here or there because I wanted to know what happened next.

This was such a great read and I can't wait to devour the next book.

I have to admit that I somewhat dropped the ball here, I should be quoting and quoting and quoting, but when I get fully invested in a book one of two things happen, either I highlight practically the whole book, or I forget to highlight and add notes altogether and next thing I’m a bit stuck, obviously, number two happened in this case, apologies.

The book opens with a definition of the word ‘conscience’ and a doctor, leaving her office. The scene is set immediately.

‘Dr Evan Taylor locked her office door and walked briskly out of the building. Tugging the collar of her brown cashmere coat over the nape of her neck, she strode across the empty parking lot, the wind whipping her long copper coloured hair in a mass of tangles over her face.’

There is an incident and we’re left with no doubt that Evana has been dealt a terrible, terrible hand, with no choice but to comply with people who have decided she is to be their teacher.

Next we move to the first person voice who has escaped where the toil she is supposed to be undertaken, and apprehended by the Robo-police who is – ‘part human, part-robot, and not one of the pure cloned kind’ who informs us that the escapee is

‘Sadie Owens. Seventeen years of age. Sector Fourteen. Medi-Tech employee’

who is out twenty three minutes before curfew. Now all the curiousity/ attention grabbing buttons were well and truly pressed. We are shown how life is divided in terms of class and we also see Sadie’s life outside of work, with a family that weren’t exactly showering her with love. As a result when she is told she is to take part in the government’s pilot programme ‘The Experimento’ where she is to be moved to a settlement under water she leaves quick smart, her only worry being leaving her beloved sister behind.

I cannot gush enough about this book. The pacing was amazing, with action suddenly hitting you between the eyes to make you sit up even straighter, the romance is perfection, captivating, but stopping before the over the top swoony stuff can occur, the characters all excellent in playing their necessary parts (you know, you like the ones you should, are deliciously shocked by those you don’t) and the way the scenes are set play like a film- I could see every mode of transport, every room, every setting with such clarity. Just to cement how much I liked this-after reading on Kindle Unlimited, I bought the boxset of 1, 2 and 2.5 and read all straight way. Epic, epic, epic (and you all know how overused I think that word is!) Ridiculously highly recommended.

Siobhan can do no wrong in my eyes! I am making my way through all her novels slowly but surely. Alinthia was amazing, so this series had me curious and excited. She created a new dystopian future which is entirely believable. I could not put this book down. Logan is so incredibly swoon worthy! I always worry when reading an author’s catalogue that I will find something that changes my mind. This series is everything! This lady is a genius my mind is decided. I didn’t know aliens and underwater sanctuaries were my thing but sign me up. BRB going to binge the series!

Reviewed in Australia on July 29, 2016
I really enjoyed this book. I found it an engaging, turn-the-pages-quickly story that was filled with interest and excitement. There are elements here of 'The Hunger Games,' 'Divergent,' 'The Fifth Wave,' even 'Twilight' but all recreated into a story that sucked me in. The main negative I have with this book is the amount of swearing, including the "f" word which seems really unnecessary in a book aimed at teenagers as well as young adults. It is because of this level of language that I am not giving this book five stars. There is also a plot twist that involves discussing sex a lot but the emphasis is on not having it.

This book contains strong language and some adult themes, but is aimed at those over sixteen and will certainly give young adults food for thought.

You know when something seems too good to be true? To a low-income family, their daughter getting accepted for a social housing experiment seems fantastic. In her new version of America, the population stats are strictly controlled, with just enough poor people being born to fill the workforce (much like China did in reality). Accommodation is in city slums and nobody can earn enough to rise to the next level. Our heroine moves to her new quarters, preparing for life in an undersea town. Wow, all the space, quality, facilities, she thinks. Then she moves to the new undersea experimental town, and it's even better. Odd how it's only the poor folks they are sending here, though.

The social aspect of the book is well thought out, like a cross between Hunger Games, Brave New World, and even Northern Lights / Golden Compass as we get a paranormal aspect involving talented aliens among us.

What bored me and made me flick pages was that about a quarter of the book is occupied with drooling over guys, mailing guys, wondering if they would ever suit each other, squabbling with guys, jealousy, discussing non-existent sex lives etc. It's possible that some girls will like this aspect more than others; guys won't like it. Suffice to say the author provides a reason for insta-infatuation at the very end.

Quite possibly our future is going to have robots doing most of the work, with people needed to do jobs involving people, like nursing. And I would think a government well resourced enough to put cities so normal they are boring, undersea, would have plenty of machines. So I am not completely sold on the concepts but the book is a useful thought experiment.

    This is an unbiased review.
