About the author

Em was born and brought up in the Central Belt of Scotland and still lives there. She was told as a child she had an overactive imagination--as if that is a bad thing. She's traded her dreams of owning her own island, just like George in the Famous Five to hoping to meet her own Mr Darcy one day. But her imagination remains the same.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2015This is a very good novel, and I enjoyed it very much. It has interesting characters and a unique take on a historical romance novel, plus, the author throws in a bit of a mystery as well. The man with the more sterling character turns out to be a louse, and the man with the reputation turns out to be the true gentleman. All in all a very good book.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2015This is the third book by Em Taylor that I've read. There are so many reviews that have described the main plot so I will just mention what I enjoyed and I didn't. The characters were sweet and with what befell the h, Rebecca, it would have been easy to take the story to a depressing place but the author had the sadness and despair but not over done. It is not easy to do this and still make the story believable but I think the author did a good job.
I was briefly horrified when her father made the suggestion of Rebecca marrying her attacker until after better informed thought better of it. It was obvious there was affection between Rebecca's parents and that made it even more confusing to me when Rebecca made it quite clear that she believed every man took a mistress. This is also the third book where the h badgers her husband to take a mistress. It was a bit disappointing because I liked the h and it made her appear too weak.
While I could appreciate the direction the author wanted to take her and could even believe she may lack self confidence it seemed too similar to her other characters viewpoints from her wager books. The panic attack she has in his study was convincing to me because I do believe a trauma like that would not just evaporate but then it is followed up with her need to push him into another's arms. She states she loves him and he has become her life now to even suggest such a thing to me did not seem right to me because I think you would be so dependent on him for security reasons the thought of someone splitting up that bond would make her feel sick.
The story was still entertaining and justice was served. Daniel's brother (Simon) lifestyle is unconventional but easily embraced which was modern day influenced I think. People were not so open and feared the word of God too much in that time to question it's fairness. I would not have wanted the subject approached differently though because I believe as they did so it worked for me. I liked Simon too much to want any other turn out but for that time I fear things would have been unfortunate in that manner. The love scenes are throughout and although they are not skimmed over I did not find myself bored so the author did her job in that department. There are also some spelling errors sprinkled throughout so be aware. It is not abundant but note worthy. I'm going with 3 and 1/2 stars on this one. I would have rated it higher but the viewpoint of her h all being that men need mistresses bothered me and effected my experience.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2014There is an abundance of sex in this book, so if the reader finds that distasteful this one is not for you.
The heroine has been sexually assaulted and manages to get home. She does tell her parents what happened but refuses to be forced to marry her attacker or to be sent to the country to hide. Her brother is also apprised of the crime. He considers calling the man out but doesn't want to lay bare to society what happened. His sister would be ruined. He does wind up telling his best friend, who as it happens has just been told by his dying father that he is to take a wife.
The BFF, the hero, finds himself admiring the heroine's spirit as well as her looks. He decides to make her an offer of marriage. She accepts though she is sure she won't make a good wife.
The heroine talks a lot about being scarred and afraid after what happened to her, but apparently all it takes to get over it is an attractive, gentle and patient man. Only in fiction, dear reader, only in fiction. She is melting in his arms and ready to consummate their marriage before they reach the hero's estate.
The man who attacked her turns up murdered. They had to leave town quickly and take her brother with them. The rapist's brother suspects the heroine's brother killed him. There is a twist to the story regarding the rapist.
It seemed to me that these people did an awful lot of talking about something they were trying to keep secret. I really doubt that in that time period some of the things would have been taken as casually as presented. Reactions were far too understated to be believed.
This wasn't a bad story but I couldn't submerge myself and get lost in it. It wasn't believable enough for me to do that.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2016I liked this book. It certainly explores some of the issues of the time that weren't spoken of in public; rape, the unfairness of a double standard that said unmarried women must be chaste but unmarried men were expected to have lovers, and homosexuality. The sexual passages were more graphic than I normally like, but anything less would have been a false note for the book. The characters are developed well and are not one dimensional. I highly recommend this book for lovers of romance who are looking for something a little deeper than a "sweet" historical romance novel.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2017Wow what a start! I was tearing up in the 1st chapter with the rape & all. This may be a big trigger to some readers. The author portrayed Rebecca's (h) emotions very realistically but I really appreciate that she also made her a very strong character. Daniel was a true gentleman & made an excellent hero. The supporting characters gave this book some depth. Once the h & H were married & he was helping Rebecca gain her trust & to regain her self-confidence, the sex scenes became too numerous.

3.0 out of 5 stars Inhalt 2 Punkte, Sexszenen 5 Punkte

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved it!
Lady Rebecca Eversley is engaged to the Earl of Newthorpe, a cruel man who rapes her to ensure she goes ahead with the marriage. It has tge opposite effect however and she breaks off the engagement, leaving her traumatised and having to face the gossiping ladies of the Ton.
Daniel is in no rush to marry and is hell bent on sewing his wild oats with several merry widows. That is until his father, who is not in good health, demands he marry or lose his inheritance. He hears rumours about his best friends sister and they go to visit her to show support. Suddenly he sees a solution to both their problems, they should marry. Of course, in true Em style, there are plot twists, drama and of course, some hot romance along the way.
This was yet another fantastic read by this author. I felt she dealt with the rape with sensitivity and your heart really does go out to Rebecca. Daniel however starts off as a bit of an arse if I'm honest, but he grows on you as he grows up throughout the book and I ended up loving him by the end. I loved the book and can't wait to read the next in the series. A very easy five stars!
