Children of Scarabaeus: An electrifying sci-fi adventure with a dash of romance Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 9 ratings

Hunted by a ruthless empire. Bound by a deadly leash. One last chance to break free.

Edie believes she and her bodyguard-turned-lover, Finn, can find refuge from the tyranny of the Crib empire by fleeing to the Fringe worlds. But Edie’s extraordinary ability to manipulate the ecology of evolving planets makes her far too valuable for the empire to lose.

Recaptured and forced to cooperate — or else she will watch Finn die — Edie is shocked to discover the Crib’s new breed of cypherteck: children. She cannot stand by while the oppressors enslave the innocent, nor can she resist the lure of Scarabaeus, the first world she tried to save, when researchers discover what appears to be an evolving intelligence.

But escape — for Edie, for Finn, and for the exploited young — will require the ultimate sacrifice… and a shocking act of rebellion.

Sara Creasy grew up in a tumbling-down Victorian house in the Midlands, UK, tapping out her first stories on a tiny blue typewriter. After moving to Melbourne as a teenager, her love of all things fantastical hooked her on escapist drama. Then she grew up—but she still plays with words.

The Wynter Wild series, starting with Little Sister Song (2019), is a bittersweet family drama for adult readers, featuring musical siblings from bad beginnings who are navigating together through unanticipated life changes, revived family secrets, and the many meanings of love.

Read Song of Scarabaeus first, since this sequel starts immediately after the events of the first book. The worldbuilding is grim with a high body count. The premise is interesting, and the story is well-written, but there are numerous named character deaths. The ending has hope for this universe.

I enjoyed getting more with Edie and Finn and finding our conclusion to the previous book, SONG OF SCARABAEUS. It kept the action alive and gave resolution to Edie and Finn’s dilemmas. It was cool to see more cyphertecks and how they differ. It made Edie seem less like this unicorn of a person with skills no one else has. The children were also a realistic evolution of the Crib based on the success they had with Edie.

I wish we could have gotten more in Finn’s head. Both books have been told from Edie’s POV and since Finn is so stoic and hardly ever says anything, it makes it challenging to see his growth and his developing feelings for Edie. Getting more about Finn was nice as well as seeing more of the Saeth which I find pretty fascinating.

I had a hard time fully grasping the “techy” stuff Edie and the children did. It was sometimes hard to visualize how Edie performed her cypherteck duties. I’m not sure if this is me missing something or if the ideas and descriptions were just really out there.
