The Scattered and the Dead (Book 2.6) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 308 ratings

This is the beginning of the end.

Catch up with old characters and meet new ones in the sixth volume in the Scattered and the Dead series, the penultimate entry.

War rages across the empty world. Those who follow Father, the Crusaders, creep through the woods to fight the Raiders from the Sovereign Cities.

Bloody battles separate limbs and torsos, heads and necks. It's a struggle for control over resources and territory, but the shape of the future hangs in the balance as well.

Meanwhile, a year has passed for Izzy and Erin, and their world keeps shifting into a meaner one. Harsh and violent and hateful.

A trip to the market morphs into a horrifying affair. Pits them face to face with thieves, murderers, and slavers. Shoves them into a
life and death conflict.

After all this time, the apocalypse still holds many secrets. How did this happen? And why?

Catch glimpses of the darkest visions yet. Vivid and grim.

Are the people we know really who they seem? Does the future hold any hope at all?

BOOK 2.6 picks up where BOOK 2.5 left off, so grab it now and get caught up in the apocalypse.

If you’ve read the other books in the “Scattered and the Dead” series, then this is your latest dose of the addictive and gripping tales of a post-apocalyptic world.

One of the things I like best about this series is how the time line jumps around. I think I’ve commented on this in previous reviews; it sounds confusing, but the authors make it work.

I also always enjoy the believable and interesting characters, and the almost poetic imagery. I found myself immersed in the story, and I essentially read this book in one marathon sitting, and didn’t finish until the wee hours of the morning.

If you’re not familiar with the series, do yourself a favor and start with the earlier books. The timeline skips around, and I think you probably COULD read the books out-of-order, but I think the story will probably flow better when read in the order that the authors intended.

I've been reading TSATD since the beginning. I found a link on Twitter for a copy of 0.5 to check it out and I have been hooked since.
This is a short read, but damn, it had a lot jammed in there! We get a story with Jeremiah 10+ years after the plague started and the other story is of my favorite character, Erin, about a year and a half after. I gotta tell ya, this book has some of the most disturbing stuff I've ever read in one of the "scenes", but it really puts the series and where the world has gone, into perspective. If you've followed the series like I have, you probably have your theories about certain characters, and this book just adds to it. The authors are able to draw you in, get you to be able to almost feel the emotion of the characters. I can't wait for book 3!
Please give this series a try, I promise you won't be disappointed!

I really enjoy this series. The characters are well developed, along with the fact that they grow over course of the books. I enjoy the series because it is not just about zombies, but it is mainly about the characters that you get to know and care for. I love dystopian fiction when the stories examine what people do to survive and if they can keep their soul intact.

The only "complaint" I have is that this book was way too short. I also heard that the next book will be its last. I this is not the case.

    Thanks.

I write this review under protest only because I really just want to start Book 3...but McBain and Vargus deserve at least something since their hard work has greatly entertained me. Characters who have become heroes to us despite their human flaws...and Jeremiah lets us see the “other side” of Father's doings...and Father we now know is another one we've been inside the head of, and how creepy that feels to have ever related to him at all! Erin continues to impress as does Izzy and those characters choosing to be good in the face of so much evil, sometimes having to dig deep and fight on a level they never have before in order to survive. Okay, that's all I have right now because I'm picking up Book 3 now, and no one can stop me! Thanks as always for your top-notch writing and for prodding us out of our comfort zones...it makes for an amazing kind of escape during these odd pandemic times we're witnessing now ourselves.

This “installment” has plenty of action, but it’s a short read. There’s a time lag between the last book and this one; time I would have liked to read about. I’m looking forward to the next book and hoping we get a decent size book this time.

This might be the most disturbing of the Scattered and the Dead books, which is saying a lot considering the previous books. In a way, 2.6 reminded me a lot of a Fallout game crossed with a Gears of War—it’s all fun and games trying to survive in the post-apocalyptic wasteland, but you know one wrong move will get you killed. Except with the Scattered and the Dead, if something happens to Erin or Izzy, nothing will bring them back. Over the course of the series, I’ve gotten so attached to these two that I can’t imagine losing them, but reading 2.6 gave me some serious moments of anxiety.

The slice of life we see through Erin and Jeremiah’s journal entries is a bleak look at how fast the world lost its veneer of civilization after TEOTWAWKI and the continuation of humanity’s downward spiral. Nine years separate Erin and Jeremiah, but life in the After doesn’t start getting better. And those zombies everybody was so afraid of? You can forget zombies, it’s your fellow man you need to be on the watch out for. Warring factions, fanatical cults, slavers, and militant raiding groups run the world now, and any sign of weakness might be your last. Or maybe you’ll do everything right and end up walking into a trap anyway. The world After is like that.

If you’re looking for a series that captures both the humanness and the brutal inhumanity of the struggle to survive at end of the world, then the Scattered and the Dead is it. Book 2.6 packs both into its pages. I can’t wait for book 3 to see how this all ends, but at the same time, I’m super scared that it’s not going to be a good ending for any of the characters I’ve come to love.

This was well written. These authors know how to write “the self-talk” of characters, giving us insight into their pasts, fears, emotions, and plans. I give it three stars though, because I found this book in the series to be a bit short and the two storylines ended abruptly. The were more like two “episodes” written side-by-side than a full fledge standalone novel. Still, I’ll be interested to see where the next book picks-up with the two cliffhanger endings.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best post apocalyptic book series out there makes a return. Warning, it’s not all about Zombies
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 7, 2018
My favourite book series is back with my two favourite characters Evin ans Izzy who go shopping, sound normal and mundane? Not two years after a virus that turns people into flesh eating zombies and not in this book. The girls have to travel for days to get to a filthy, stinky, smoky, dangerous shack town to trade with the locals and what the locals are trading is different to say the least.
We are also introduced to a new friend by the name of Jeremiah who, 10 years post apocalypse, is part of a small squadron fighting “The Father’s” army who are well armed, fight dirty and are not at all nice, in this war there is no rules other than there are no rules.
If you haven’t tried this series then do but to really get to know the characters and where they have come from then go back to book 0.5 and work your way through, you won’t regret it. These two are amazing writers and deserve more recognition for the work they do especially this amazing series.
My only gripe is that it’s not long enough (I was so disappointed when it ended) and I saw that this is the beginning of the end....... please don’t end the series, what will I do without TSATD to look forward to every few months?

A short bridging novella before the final instalment. Erin, Izzy and Marcus are growing up rapidly and their story remains the standout. We are introduced to Jeremiah, a soldier nine years ahead of Erin and Izzy, almost 11 years post apocalypse. A juicy set up for the conclusion of this amazing Sadie series.
