Second Chance Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 222 ratings

Ryder’s on the company bonding trip from hell, five days of competitive cycling with competitive colleagues and an even more competitive boss. Faced with yet another vertical climb, he ignores his uninvited, insistent inner cheerleader. No, he cannot keep up, and what’s more, he’s had enough. And the weather appears to agree he should stop, when sun turns in an instant to thick fog.

Callan’s at Whittaker’s Auction House to bid on fae land that his werewolf pack need as their new home, when an unsuspecting human stumbles through the door. Ryder is out of breath, out of luck, way out of his depth—and apparently the newest item on the auctioneer’s block. Unexpectedly tempting, if Callan had the money.

As the bidding heats up and Ryder proves dangerously irresistible to the assembled supernatural creatures, the situation grows more and more precarious. When Callan interferes, he puts his pack’s future in peril. Despite knowing how devious faeries can be, desperation makes Callan accept a deal, a chance to win the land for his pack and a future with Ryder. But it’s a risk. Possibly a deadly one.

This is not 'just another Valentine's story', it's a Barbara Elsborg Valentine's story (ish). So don't expect the usual sonnets and flowers and Cupids, but do expect the unexpected - vampires, weres, witches and warlocks. Oh, and a vengeful fae. Things are not quite as they may seem. You have been warned!

Barbara Elsborg lives in Kent in the South of England. She always wanted to be a spy, but having confessed to everyone without them even resorting to torture, she decided it was not for her. Volcanology scorched her feet. A morbid fear of sharks put paid to marine biology. So instead, she spent several years successfully selling cyanide.

After dragging up two rotten, ungrateful children and frustrating her sexy, devoted, wonderful husband (who can now stop twisting her arm) she finally has time to conduct an affair with an electrifying plugged-in male, her laptop.

Her earlier books feature quirky heroines and bad boys, now she concentrates on the bad boys, and hopes her books are as much fun to read as they are to write. If you'd like to know more about Barbara or be put on her mailing list, details can be found here www.barbaraelsborg.com She is also on Facebook and Twitter under her author name.

Second Chance is a standalone MM Romance with a HEA. PNR / fantasy, shifters (werewolves), fae
insta-attraction, second chance. 160p. 2 POV. Third person. Past tense. 160 pages. This edition February 10th, 2020.

The story here was unusual to say the least. Not easy to guess at all what's the actual deal with some particulars and what's happening and why. All will be revealed in good time. Very imaginative - but the author has shown to have an excellent imagination besides excellent writing skills. The story isn't only a PNR/fantasy story, it's also very strongly MM in essential ways we readers very much look forward to. That is to say, when it got going, it also got hot. And the happenings and the framework for it wasn't very run of the mill nor boring. But this author's good at creating the unique.

The message was after all very much about ... love. Loving, and how far love can reach and how much it can give us, even unselfishly.

Ryder is on a “team building” cycling trip with his company, but he's not seeing much of the team since he can't keep up with them. Of course, considering his medical history it's amazing he can even ride a bike. When he's left behind even by the boss who was supposed to keep an eye on him, Ryder plans to give up trying and catch a ride with the support van to the next stop. Suddenly surrounded by a dense fog while coasting down hill, Ryder loses control and crashes. Once he pulls himself together and the fog clears, he finds himself in a different landscape with a track instead of the road, and a dense forest. Making his way to the closest sign a civilization, Ryder finds himself in a sort of auction house with a group of strange men, some of whom show a special interest in Ryder, who isn't sure whether he's been hit on the head too hard. It's all just the start of a series of events nobody will believe.

“Second Chance” is set in a world where werewolves, faeries, vampires and other assorted fantasy creatures are real, although none of the humans know that. That said, the story doesn't rely too much on magic and improbable powers beyond what's needed to set up the plot. There's enough real human emotions at the core of the story to make it believable.

Ryder is very much at the center of the story, although we also get a few scenes from Callan's point of view. Ryder comes across as mostly a very realistic character. Once we learn a bit about him in the first few chapters it becomes pretty obvious, to me at least, where the story will go. It's yet another example of a plot that's quite predictable, but the writing makes it a fun read anyway. The occasional injection of snarky humor also helps a great deal.

The basic plot is something of a classic: Two people meet and feel an instant attraction, but after one night of passion they're separated and have to find each other again. As always, it's the details of how this common story line is played out that make it a fun read. The fantasy approach makes the separation of the pair a bit easier to engineer, but it still makes for an interesting story.

Alright. So I love werewolf stories more than life. It's my weakness. And I've become a one click buyer of all things Barbara Elsborg. Does that mean that there weren't flaws with this story? Of course not. On the whole instalove isn't my thing though I realize in this market, you can't have werewolves without the other. Do I wish the story was longer and we had more of an opportunity for things to play out slower? Yes. But. I did love everything that was done in this short novel. I loved Ryder and Callan's funny dialogue and back and forth. I loved how they strived to please one another even when the situations they were in were less than ideal or they were feeling unsure. The werewolf, fairy, warlock, etc. Supernatural world was interesting in the bits we've seen and in keeping with prior excursions the author has dabbled in. In short, I loved it a lot and I'm so very pleased I have another quality werewolf book to reread when I'm in a book rut.

I love everything this author writes, and this story is no exception. I finished it in one sitting. I love everything about this book, not least of which, its supernatural theme, and that it’s a perfect, and lovely Valentine’s Day story, full of romance.
This is a story full of intrigue, and mischiefmaking by interfering, but loving parents, who engineer a meeting between Callan, a werewolf, and Ryder, a human in the hope that this meeting will end Callan’s sadness and depression over the loss of his mate, Nico. They call upon a favour owed to them by Padraig, a spiteful fae, who has his own agenda for agreeing to help them - that of a need for revenge, against Callan.
A second chance of a life, a love so strong that even death cannot silence a heart that knows what it wants and refuses to be silenced, a lost memory, and a lost voice, and the possibility of a new love and a renewed happiness, all make it perfect for a romantic Valentine’s (or anytime) read.💘💝

A blend of the mystical & supernatural elements with the mundane. Ryder is on a team building course with his annoying boss, cycling like crazy through the countryside hills, cursing the idea of building anything through maniacal exercise.
After drifting through fog he finds himself being dragged into an auction as one of the lots being sold. Callan, a werewolf is there to bid for pack lands for his parents and pack. Padraig, a faery is there for revenge on Callan, the wolf who escaped his clutches and Ryder is the means to achieve that end.
A superb story of lust and love and the supernatural with endearing and hot MCs and a believable fairytale romance. Good amounts of doubt and angst thrown in with plenty of pathos and healthy scepticism. I love Barbara Elsborg's books and this is another fantastic story from her realm.

Sweet and funny short story. Plot moved along well. Characters were enjoyable. I quite enjoyed Ryder and his reactions/acceptance of the new reality he found himself in. It didn’t delve to deep into any world building as it was a short book but it gave enough to get a good idea of this shifter universe and some secondary characters were interesting enough that I wouldn’t mind a follow up book.

I didn ,t think i would like this book at the start.
But I ended up loving it, mz Elborg certainly knows how to write.
I thought Ryder and Callan had a sticky start, but as the story opened, they were meant for each other.
A well crafted book that sucks you in, as all her bookes do.
    A very good read.
