Scott James (S.J.) Varengo was born in 1960, (fifty years to the day after the passing of Mark Twain - take from that what you will), in a city called New York. Two years later he formed a band called The Beatles [citation needed].
He returned to New York City to attend Fordham University (having been told it was a basketball powerhouse) before transferring to the State University of New York at Potsdam (having been told it was located in the tropics), from which he earned a bachelor's degree in Art History. (Aside from the handsomely framed diploma and his ability to run art categories on Jeopardy, it hasn't really paid off).
Varengo loves to read (favorite authors are too many to list in this limited space, but include Craig A. Hart, Hunter S. Thompson, Kurt Vonnegut (even though he has no middle initial), J.R.R. Tolkien, and an up-and-comer named Ernie Heming-something-or-other), listen to music (when he writes, it's usually jazz - the rest of the time it's Industrial Techno Punk - oh, it's a thing), and walk along forested trails with his wife Kim. He lives in Baldwinsville, NY, a suburb of Syracuse, known for its picturesque setting and its friendly people. He has two adult children of whom he is obnoxiously proud.
His published works include a volume of short fiction called WELCOME HOME which was recently revised and updated, The Cerah of Quadar Series, The Cleanup Crew series, and SpyCo novella series, which he co-writes with Craig A. Hart. The two have also co-authored SERENITY REBORN, the latest installment in Hart's Serenity series. Varengo's next novel, JELLY JARS, will be available soon.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2023Iowa author Craig A. Hart is both a writer and an editor: he has served as editor-in-chief for The Rusty Nail literary magazine, as manager for Sweatshoppe Media, and director of Northern Illinois Radio Information Service, an outreach that brought daily news and information to the visually impaired. His works have been published in The Orange Room Review, Voices, The Stray Branch, Red Poppy Review, The Mindful Word, Inclement, Right Hand Pointing, 7x20 Magazine, among others. In addition to writing fiction Craig has published self help manuals on writing and critiques of other writers’ works. Craig co-authors this espionage series with New York author Scott James (S.J.) Varengo, a man who attended Fordham University and the State University of New York at Potsdam with a degree in Art History. While both men are successful while writing individually, their combined talents make this series THE SHELBY ALEXANDER THRILLER SERIES ring with a fresh combination of unique locales and espionage.
Hart and Varengo together are a tough team to beat! They are able to infuse a sense of urgency to their new Shelby Alexander episode even in the first lines; ‘Shelby sat in a chair beside the hospital-style bed and looked at his hands. They were clutched together so tightly he could have wrung blood form the proverbial turnip. He had always bated hospitals, but this wasn’t even a hospital. No, this was worse. Far worse. Because people didn’t come here to heal - they came here to die.’ The authors place the central character caring for his dying wife in a hospice and the episode ignites.
The authors provide a quick overview of the plot: ‘It's been five years since Shelby's last adventure. He's finally followed through on his original goal when he first moved back to his boyhood town of Serenity, Michigan. Namely, to settle down and enjoy life. But did he decide too late? His health is suffering. His social circle is shrinking. And then comes the knock on his door. Revealing the son he never knew he had. But is that all there is to the story? Or is there something more sinister at work? In addition to being forced by circumstances to reevaluate everything in his life to this point, Shelby must now decide whether or not to trust this newcomer, someone who could hold great joy--or great heartbreak--as Shelby enters life's third and final act.’
Written with a finely tuned balance of suspense, adventure, and a touch of humor, this seventh episode zings - proving a fine dark night’s read. Recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2024The characters were very real as the story progressed and the relationships were fun to follow. I really hated some of what ended, but this is my first of this series and it may not be the last. Read it and enjoy it.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2024Liked this book very much but wanted more at the end. I wanted Patterson to be saved somehow. I may have to buy the next book.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2024I have read a few of the Serenity books and they were pretty good. But this one didn't quite do it for me. Good storyline, kept you guessing but it just didn't make me all warm inside. I will read more of this series because I like Shelby.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 20215 yrs after the last book Shelby finds himself aging not so gracefully. Helen, his ex wife is in hospice. His friend Mack has moved closer to him! He’s still seeing Katherine. He’s shocked to discover he has a son who looks just like him! His life has slowed down quite a bit due to old age and severe arthritis but he still has it when he needs to bring it. This was a look at Shelby’s emotional side as he reflects on his past! I love the relationship he has with Mack! This book was a little different from the rest in the series but it still brought the humor, action and drama! I enjoyed it.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2024Shelby chose to close himself off from emotions. Maybe getting older softened his take on life. Someone walks into his life that could make a big impact. But were their intentions good or evil?
- Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2020Shelby Alexander returns in an emotional ride through the Michigan town of Serenity. The repartee between Shelby and his pal Mack the ex-cop from Detroit is worth the price of admission but there is so much more to this story than crotchety aging men drinking single malt. The antagonist hides behind bars living to kill Shelby. Love is blossoming but where is it all going? You have got to read this marvelous story if you are a Serenity fan, and if you are not familiar with the series may I suggest that you start with the classic beginning “Serenity” ? A thrilling read upon thrilling read is in store, guaranteed!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2020First (maybe should be last) I found very few hiccups or stumbling blocks/potholes in the narrative; this theme holds together very well.
Additionally I will disclose that this old man got very sentimental at the dénouement, so your skepticism with this review would be understandable.
Nitpicker that I am, I recorded only two scenes in this book that were poorly thought out. (See my notes on Good reads if curiosity compels.)
The yarn is plausible, entertaining, and a radical departure for "Shelly", and perfectly dovetails with the character (and characters) Hart/Varengo have presented.
While I was a bit disappointed in the "car in the bonfire" scenario, even that was rendered carefully and consistently with the story line.
My only real disappointment with entire yarn was the chopping off of a branch (two, actually) of the family line and whatever stories they might have presented.

Well I sat and cried, never expected that to happen. Helen was still in love with Shelby, just something she could not let go.

A well written novel that was difficult to put down.
Enjoyed the unusual main theme of the book which won’t be disclosed for giving away its uniqueness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great book
I loved this story, full of emotional rollercoasters. Fast moving and gripping. I couldn't put this book down. Mack and Shelby make a great team and Katherine saves the day.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Storylinei is interesting
This follow up to the Shelby Alexander books is an interesting read. It's just too bad that the authors didn't take the time to run the spell and grammar check. Would have made the book easier to eeas.
