About the author

JMD Reid has been a long-time fan of Fantasy ever since he read The Hobbit way back in the fourth grade. His head has always been filled with fantastical tales, and he is eager to share the worlds dwelling in his dreams with you.
Reid is long-time resident of the Pacific Northwest in and around the City of Tacoma. The rainy, gloomy atmosphere of Western Washington, combined with the natural beauty of the evergreen forests and the looming Mount Rainier, provides the perfect climate to brew creative worlds and exciting stories!
When he's not writing, Reid enjoys playing video games, playing D&D and listening to amazing music.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2022The first in a 12 book epic fantasy series, Foundation of Courage does not disappoint. I’ve read some of JMD Reid’s previous books and they are all prime examples of epic fantasy. The worldbuilding is stellar and the prose is excellent. My favourite thing about this book is all the unique creatures (including the terrifying and the adorable) and races that he has created. The story starts off running when Euddan enters the dark forest to save his mom. He narrowly survives, and then decides to save his best friend and love interest Vounee from the evil machinations of her father. From there, the story escalates as they must escape and the stakes get higher. I really enjoyed the story and I found it hard to put down! I’m so excited that it will be such a long series, and it’s already completed so the books will be released quickly. I can definitely see how this is going to be such a huge story, definitely worthy of the title of epic fantasy and I can’t wait to continue reading!
I received an ARC from the author and I’m voluntarily leaving an honest review.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2022This book really reminded me of classic epic fantasy, which I don't seem to find so much in new books. It gives the same feeling you get while absorbed in the worlds of Shannara, Wheel of Time, or Lord of the Rings.
The Dragon Wars ended 3000 years ago, removing the dragons from the world. However, a group has decided that the gods are myths and the Dragon Lords should be brought back. This must happen by force, and is interrupted when Euddán stops Vouneé's father from finishing his work.
I'd recommend this for upper YA audiences, as it starts out pretty dark (trigger warning for child abuse) and has your typical teenager/soon-to-be-adult thoughts of marriage and children and the acts that go along with that (but no on-the-page acts or overly descriptive scenes).
The magic system is super complex and I had to take notes to keep track of it all. There is a nice section at the end of the book that would be really helpful to traditional readers, but isn't much help in ebook format.
The author has given himself an ambitious goal of publishing all 12 books by October (5 are currently available) . It is nice to not have to wait around months or years for the next book, but I wonder if another editing pass-through or two would have helped catch my interest earlier in the book. Nevertheless, I am excited to continue this series and am excited to see what happens in the next book.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2024I had a hard time getting into Foundation of Courage. The book starts off slow and didn’t manage to grab my attention. Unfortunately, it felt a bit boring for my taste. Maybe it picks up later, but I couldn’t get through the early chapters.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2022I get so excited when I open a new fantasy book and find a giant map full of new lands to explore. Right away, Reid sets the stage for epic adventure, but grounds it in the characters of a small town. Euddán, a sheep shearer, is best friends with Vounée, the outcast daughter of a local mage whom everyone fears. Euddán rescues her from her father’s horrible torture, only to find the spirit of something ancient has wormed its way into her and is trying to take control of her body.
When a warrior comes to take Vounée away to complete her father’s terrible ritual, she and Euddán run away together to find a way to release her from the spirit. The pacing is spot-on and the combat scenes are fantastic. The action is practically non-stop, and Reid begins twisting the threads of so many possibilities. Creative fantasy races, complex magic systems and a world full of Gods and factions that serve them, and it’s only book one!
I can’t wait to find out what happens next! I was given an ARC ebook by the author and this is my honest review.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2022This is a fantastic start to a new series! There were multiple layers of storytelling, character development, and complexities which kept me turning pages. The scene-setting was immaculate, and I felt like I was transported into the strange and wonderful world Reid has created. At a certain point, you think you know what's going on, but keep reading. You will be pleasantly surprised!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2022If Tolkien built a world for Sanderson's stories and Rowling tossed in a few plot twists, I don't know that it would capture the magnitude yet completely relatable essence of JMD Reid's Foundation of Courage. What I love about it is that the world is entirely unique, with its own religions, races, cultures, and dissensions -- yet I don't need a glossary to understand it (though one is provided which is AWE-SOME). It is spelled out with smooth ease throughout the natural conversations in the story, and behind every bend is a new kind of creature or magic that would sound wild out of context but completely fits the world within which it resides! And the characters, the build of each personality and relation to each of the other characters... the secrets... the identity crises... the mysterious backstories slowly revealed... enchanting, daring, and powerful! And y'all -- this is only Book One!
