Shadows of the Fall (Duchy of Terra Book 8) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 1,949 ratings

Fifty thousand years ago, the Precursors broke the universe
Now great powers and small alike fight over their wreckage
But in the midst of the chaos, there is a question no one asks…
Why?

Morgan Casimir, commander of the A!Tol Imperial cruiser
Defiant, has seen the works of the Precursor aliens known as the Alava. She has seen their accidents threaten worlds and consume entire star fleets.

Charged by her Empress to prevent a conspiracy of profiteers from finding and using a lost fleet of Alava warships, she knows unimaginable catastrophe looms if she fails. With her lover, xenoarcheologist Dr. Rin Dunst, at her side, she is sent to a hot zone on the edge of war to once again achieve the impossible.

But as they search along a border flaring in violence, Morgan discovers that if the worst comes to pass, her orders are to destroy the ships rather than allow them to be taken…and she realizes that there just might be a reason seemingly godlike aliens lost an entire fleet.

The 8th book in the saga of Terra (Earth's) incorporation into the Imperium and the ever widening circle of events that ripple like a stone cast into still waters. Glynn Stewart continues to demonstrate an absolute mastery of the space opera genre, with vividly drawn characters combined with fast moving but intricate plot.

Shadows of the Fall picks up shortly after the events in Relics of Eternity. The remnants of technology left behind by the Alava, a precursor civilization that fell 50,000 years in the past, still linger - dangerous and unpredictable but of incalculable value. Hints and legends point to a lost Alava fleet of warships, a treasure trove of technology, but why the fleet was lost, and what drove the Alava to take the incredibly arrogant risk that resulted in the fall of their civilization - a hidden terror lost for 50,000 years.

It is strongly recommended that readers start with the first book in the series - Terran Privater and read the stories in sequence. While any book in the series can be read as a standalone novel, the threads and arcs are interwoven throughout the series. Hints and brief mentions in the early books are like little gems that only really shine once the larger meaning is uncovered in later books.

A strongly recommend series, by an excellent and prolific author, Mr. Stewart's books never fail to delight and entertain.

Disclaimer - I have received nothing of value for this review, other than an advanced reader copy.

This book picks up only a bit after the last book. After her recent encounter with a rogue Precursor artifact she's charged with investigating an impending war between two of the more powerful empires. Both sides are claiming the other is destroying ships, which wouldn't be as big a deal if there wasn't evidence of more Precursor technology involved....

Excellent book, interesting twist that follows logically from the last.

As before, quite recommended. I really like this series, though I just noted that there's only one more in this arc. Looking forward to it; you will too!

Yes, I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an unbiased review.

I don't think I've ever given one of Glynn's books less than 3 stars.

There is no other author (besides maybe Lindsay Buroker or JD Robb) that I devour new books from, without a second thought. Even if I feel like maybe the characters don't develop the way I thought they would, or the "technology" seems boring to me, there is always SOMETHING in Glynn's books that brings the entire book up to 4 or 5 stars for me.

With this particular world, I loved Annette Bond and now I love her daughter, Morgan Casmir, too. There is so much backstory and promise of development to come (unanswered but NOT cliffhanging questions) that every entry in this series is an enjoyable puzzle piece to be put into place while we wait for more pieces to be able to see the whole picture.

Morgan is as strong as ever though we see a *little* more of her internal struggle in this book. I enjoy Rin and Morgan's entire crew. I read this book in a few hours and as usual, just wished I could have more of the story immediately. So why WOULDN'T that be a 5 star book?

(I read a review off a different Glynn Stewart book that complained all the 5 star reviews were from ARC readers. Well, I have to say - first, those of us that love all of Glynn's books and give them 5 stars were probably chomping at the bit to become ARC readers, I sure was. Second, not all of us are looking for these books to be life changing, though they are pretty darn up there. Our 5 stars might not be your 5 stars. Third, maybe the reviewer should appreciate that there were enough of us that loved the book that much that we actually reviewed the book as soon as it was released and gave it high marks. You don't see that consistency a lot. I think it speaks to not only how good Glynn's books are but how well his staff works to coordinate and how the group as a whole inspires us. And in a nutshell...isn't that how his heroes work with their crews and why we love them so much???)

Well conceived, written and paced. Glynn Stewarts Duchy of Terra continues to be an interesting and entertaining read. Well Done.
  • Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2020
The Duchy of Terra series is composed of a series of trilogies which maintain some independence while still featuring the same setting and in the case of the 2nd and 3rd trilogy the same protagonist, Morgan Casimir. As frequently happens in the middle book of trilogies, Secrets of the Fall takes the events of the initial book of this trilogy, Relics of Eternity, and grows the understanding of the characters resulting in a modification of their objective and end goals. In short, their known universe just gets much bigger and more dire which is quite a feat after the solar system eating biological relic featured in the first book of this trilogy.

The humans of the Duchy of Terra Series are junior members of outer alliance which has become embroiled in the affairs of even larger core alliances. The overt mission of Morgan in this volume shifts to the prevention of a new war between several of these larger core powers, but still involves much of the exploration of past eras contained in the prior volumes. Morgan and crew find much more than expected and also, of course, manage to prevent the war.

Rather than starting the series with this volume, I would strongly encourage any new readers to start with the beginning of this trilogy, Relics of Eternity, if not the first of all eight volumes. You will be richly rewarded with a deep and unique universe filled with mystery and plenty of classic space opera action.

Shadows of the Fall is the second book of the third story arc in the Duchy of Terra Universe, (eighth book in the series). This story arc focuses on Morgan Casimir, the step daughter of the Duchess, and this book is another good instalment of the story. We learn more of the demise of the Alava race, those trying to exploit the ancient’s technology and what caused their demise. There is some good intrigue and good action which is combined to provide a nicely balanced story that I really enjoyed. Overall, the series continues to deliver and I am definitely looking forward to the next book.

Note: I received a free electronic copy in exchange for an unbiased review (but liked it enough to buy a copy anyway)
