      Designed as an instrument mic, the SM57 is legendary in the rock world for miking guitar amps and drum sets. That instrumental pedigree means it lacks a pop grill, so I installed the Shure A2WS Popper Stopper Locking Windscreen for vocal use. Oddly, the SM57 and A2WS windscreen has been the mic combo choice of USA presidents for decades!

      For my voice, I get the best tone from about 10 cm away. If you prefer less brightness, speak offset to the capsule. I don't sound presidential but this nearly indestructible little mic sounds great: natural, clear, smooth and easy on plosives. Legibility of individual words is excellent. When raw and unprocessed, it evokes a bit of a radio announcer vibe, similar to the PodMic USB with Rode Central defaults, but a level cleaner, smoother and more organic. The unprocessed SM57 sound is more flattering for my voice than the Rode PodMic USB.

      The SM57 is small, plain and nondescript in appearance. Despite the great sound and joint rock and presidential legacy, it will never replace huge status enhancing dynamic mics used in YouTube productions. It's not pretty and only comes in goth black. Use of the A2WS improves both sound and appearance and, coupled with the shiny Shure A55M Shock Mount Microphone Clip, you might get away with sneaking it into a YouTube video. Highly recommended for almost anything that needs to be miked.

      I've used the Shure SM58 for 35-years now, and wanted to try this mic out just for the hell of it. Here's my take.
      For recording or amplifying instruments, this is a real work horse and ideal for the job. Its reliable and tough as nails. It's can also be good for vocals when used at high volumes with a loud band. But for primarily vocal use, I would definitely suggest the SM58 (the one with the "On/Off" switch to instantly stop any annoying feedback issues). The incredible sound of the 58 for amplifying the human voice simply cannot be beat, and I've tried them all, even mics five times the price. So my suggestion is, the SM57 for miking instruments, the SM58 for vocals.

      pretty good as an instrument microphone or to mic up your guitar or bass amp on stage. could also be used as a drum or percussion mic. but not as good as a vocal mic, still does the job pretty well.
