4.5 out of 5 stars 1,330 ratings

From best-selling historical fiction novelist, Eric Schumacher, comes the second volume in Olaf’s Saga: the adrenaline-charged story of Olaf Tryggvason and his adventures in the kingdom of the Rus.

AD 968. It has been ten summers since the noble sons of the North, Olaf and Torgil, were driven from their homeland by the treachery of the Norse king, Harald Eriksson. Having then escaped the horrors of slavery in Estland, they now fight among the Rus in the company of Olaf’s uncle, Sigurd. It will be some of the bloodiest years in Rus history. The Grand Prince, Sviatoslav, is hungry for land, riches, and power, but his unending campaigns to expand his kingdom are leaving the corpses of thousands in their wake. From the siege of Konugard to the battlefields of ancient Bulgaria, Olaf and Torgil struggle to stay alive in

About the Author

Gildart Jackson's acting credits span the stage and screen. He is most often recognized for his roles as Gideon on Charmed and Simon Prentiss on General Hospital. He has also starred in numerous television shows, including CSI and Vegas, and he played the lead in the highly acclaimed independent feature film You, directed by his wife, Melora Hardin.

Eric Schumacher was born in Los Angeles in 1968. He is the author of two historical fiction novels, God's Hammer and its sequel, Raven's Feast. Both tell the story of the first Christian king of Viking Norway, Hakon Haraldsson, and his struggles to gain and hold the High Seat of his realm. Eric's fascination with Vikings and medieval history began at a young age, though exactly why is not clear. While Los Angeles has its own unique history, there are no destroyed monasteries or Viking burial sites or hidden hoards buried in fields. Still, from the earliest age, he was drawn to books about Viking kings and warlords and was fascinated by their stories and the turbulent times in which they lived. He began writing as a child, though never considered it as a career until he was in his second year of international business school and living in Germany. Poor timing to be sure, but better late than never. It was there that Eric began researching and writing God's Hammer, his first novel. Eric now resides in Santa Barbara with his wife, his two children, and his dog.

Sigurd's Swords, the second book in Olaf's Saga, sweeps you into a Nordic action/ adventure in the historical backdrop of the Rus Kingdom (modern-day Bulgaria) in AD 968. The Viking-age saga is based on the Norse tales of the legendary Viking king, Olaf Tryggvason, but is told in first-person by his companion and protector, Torgil. The saga follows the adventures and tribulations of three primary characters: Torgil, Prince Olaf, and Turid (Torgil's love interest and female warrior). In the first book, Forged by Iron, the three adolescent companions barely escape with their lives after the betrayal by the Norse king, Harold Eriksson, and are subsequently enslaved under horrific conditions. After Lord Sigurd—Olaf's uncle and commander to Rus Prince Sviatoslav—frees them, Olaf and Torgil feel indebted to him and serve as soldiers under his command.

The second book, Sigurd's Swords, starts ten years later when Prince Sviatoslav is expanding the Rus Empire in bloody warfare. The story jumps into a brutal siege at Konugard, which Signurd's army is defending against the treacherous Pechenegs. A small fleet of Rus ships has come to their aid, but someone has to slip through the enemy line to get a message to the Rus general aboard the vessel on where to attack. Without hesitation, Olaf and Torgil both volunteer as messengers and succeed in their mission. Ultimately hailed as heroes, they are but game pieces in the political machinations of royals and generals willing to sacrifice them to achieve their ambitions. The three companions wrestle with their internal turmoil as they strive to find their places in life. Their perseverance and loyalty to each other are tested in open battlefields, siege warfare, and royal courts. Universal themes of unconditional love, corruption of power, and betrayal resonated with me after reading the book.

Author Eric Schumacher has again skillfully portrayed the essence of the Norse characters in a riveting epic adventure with battles, political intrigue, and unrequited love. The brash and charismatic Olaf embraces his destiny to become a king while Torgil struggles to find his place as an honorable and courageous warrior. After enduring sexual assault as a slave, Turid strives to control her life by being a warrior but must overcome her fear of intimacy with a man she loves. One of the more heartfelt subplots is how Torgil supports Turid's desire to be a warrior after she has rejected his marriage proposal.

Sigurd's Sword is a tale about friendship and the bond between warriors fighting alongside each other. Themes explored in this epic tale include the illusion of power, unconditional love, and honor. The author vividly describes the Viking culture and the harsh conditions that warriors must endure in battle and siege warfare. Like the first book, poignant moments of compassion are juxtaposed with harsh realities of bloody conflict and betrayal. Extra bonuses in the book include regional maps and a glossary of Viking terms used in the narrative.

Sigurd's Swords continues the riveting epic of the legendary King Olaf and his closest companions. It is a character-driven Viking adventure of three young warriors searching for their destinies in the brutal world of warfare, political intrigue, and betrayal. I look forward to reading the third book and highly recommend the series for readers who enjoy multi-layered Norse adventure and action epics.

In Book 2 of Olaf’s Saga, Eric Schumacher delivers another fascinating and highly entertaining historical novel. Torgil, Olaf, and Turid continue to face additional trials, challenges and perils of the Viking age. The interaction of the three protagonists is engaging. Torgil vacillates between anger and disgust over his near hopeless effort to fulfill his sworn oath to protect Olaf who never fails to precipitate or be the first to volunteer for every risky undertaking. Turid’s increasing effort to turn away from traditional female pursuits to become instead a warrior ready to take her place in a shield wall causes additional turmoil for Torgil. As was the case in Book 2, the action is fast-paced and the characters are both interesting and believable. I particularly enjoy how the author uses sardonic humor to offset the brutal reality of harsh conditions and bloody battlefields the author describes so well. The ability to bring history alive and the capability to put the reader convincingly in a past time and place is the hallmark of a master historical fiction novelist, qualities Eric Schumacher demonstrates in this novel and others he’s written. I look forward to reading more of Olaf’s Saga. Preston Holtry, author of the Arrius Trilogy

Though this is the second book in Olaf's saga, you really could call this Torgil's saga, as Torgil is the primary focus of this book. It's a fantastic read though and extremely hard to put down. The author really does a fantastic job of setting the scene and immersing the reader into the action, and you really get a sense of the hopelessness of some of these situations, as well as the moments of joy that are scattered throughout. If you love Norse historical fiction, this book is for you!

I continue to be thoroughly engaged by the compelling storytelling and rich character development in Eric Schumacher's books (first Hakon's Saga, now Olaf's Saga). Though this particular book is a long entry, the pacing remained perfect throughout to keep me wanting to read more, and Schumacher does a masterful job making each character rich and distinctive. I will be equally excited to receive my next installment of Olaf's Saga!

Sorry, but I enjoyed Book 1 better than this one. I am not a scholar of Viking history and, no doubt, not much is known about Olaf, but Loaf played a very small part in this story, which was a disappointment to me.

I really enjoyed this reading. Eric has an amazing talent with words and paints a vivid picture with the battles and with the emotions within Torgil. I am starting the next book in the series tonight! Im hooked!

How refreshing to discover an author who is able to create three-dimensional characters with such believable strengths and weaknesses and can successfully combine suspense with great descriptive action. I enjoyed the various subplots and cannot wait for the next book in the series that will draw our heroes ever closer to their destinies. I read books one and two in a couple of sessions; they were hard to put down.
