Lessons for Sleeping Dogs (Cambridge Fellows Book 12) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 123 ratings

Cambridge, 1921.

When amateur sleuth Jonty Stewart comes home with a new case to investigate, his partner Orlando Coppersmith always feels his day has been made. Although, can there be anything to solve in the apparent mercy killing of a disabled man by a doctor who then kills himself, especially when everything takes place in a locked room?

But things are never straightforward where the Cambridge fellows are concerned, so when they discover that more than one person has a motive to kill the dead men—motives linked to another double death—their wits get stretched to the breaking point.

And when the case disinters long buried memories for Jonty, memories about a promise he made and hasn’t kept, their emotions get pulled apart as well. This time, Jonty and Orlando will have to separate fact from fiction—and truth from emotion—to get to the bottom of things..

When I heard there was going to be another Jonty and Orlando I was so excited and that excitement was justified. Even after 15 years together they still manage to excite, intrigue, romance, and infuriate each other and the reader. I will say that when I saw it was set after the war, there was a little sense of sadness knowing that Mr. and Mrs. Stewart would not be part of the story as they died of influenza during the war. Well, I did indeed miss the senior Stewarts but Jonty's sister, Lavinia stepped in to her parent's shoes perfectly and loved every minute of it. Throw in their good friend, Ariadne, who just happened to be the one to bring their recent case to the boys' door, and the amateur detectives are afoot in all their mystery-solving glory. I know some series tend to be repetitive after a while but Cambridge Fellows has not reached that point yet and I hope to see more to come, I don't think I'll ever tire of Jonty and Orlando.

I have read all 12 books in this Cambridge Fellows Series. Obviously, I love the series; Orlando and Jonty are endearing and their reparte is realistic and humorous. I miss Jonty's parents, but Jonty's sister and her son seem to be gradually gaining larger parts in the last two stories.stories. I hope Ms. Cochrane keeps the series going for at least another 12, but really more, books.

I love the characters and their family, friends and acquaintances. The mystery left me with a couple of unanswered questions and the language used by the author to portray the times was a little different from past books. I will look for the next one.

The latest in this series is a fun read and has quite a bit of humor in it. Drs Stewart & Coppersmith have a classic locked room mystery to solve and, as usual with their stories, it is as much about the journey as the destination.

Lessons for Sleeping Dogs was a satisfying, comfortable, and oh-so British read.

Charlie Cochrane’s Lessons for Sleeping Dogs is the twelfth book in her Cambridge Fellows series. Though I recommend you read the other books in the series first (especially since details of previous cases and books are mentioned), I was able to follow along quite nicely though I had not read the others myself.

It’s 1921 and Cambridge fellows and amateur sleuths Jonty Stewart and Orlando Coppersmith are experiencing a certain amount of growing pains as they settle back into their lives after the Great War. Orlando, in particular, is dealing with his emotional (not to mention physical) scars, as he thought his long-time partner Jonty had been killed.

Jonty hits the nail on the head when he suggests that Orlando needs a new case to focus his attention and improve his mood.

Luckily for him, Jonty hears of an unresolved mystery that piques his interest. Edward Atherton, suffering from a long-term degenerative disease is said to have contracted the help of Dr. Paul Robertson to help Edward end his life. The mystery, however, is how both men ended up dead by cyanide inside a locked room.

Was it an assisted suicide gone wrong? A double suicide? A murder-suicide? A double murder? Or only an accident? One pressing question remains: how do you possibly solve a case that has happened behind closed doors?

As it turns out, more than one person had motivation to kill Atherton and Robertson and their case is linked to another double death. But digging in other people’s lives brings up unpleasant memories for both Jonty and Orlando. To continue with the case, they’ll have to face their demons, but at what cost?

Lessons for Sleeping Dogs was an excellent mystery. I found myself captivated by every twist an turn. And that ending—well, I won’t spoil it for you.

    A delightful and satisfying read!

I really enjoyed this book in the series. Well written story with rounded characters. I did not expect the solution to the case fill if twists and turns, it was lovely to see Mrs Sheridan and Jonty’s sister take prominent role. I highly recommend this book.
