You will be interrupted with an advertisement for the sequel during the climax of this novel.
I enjoyed reading this book.... UNTIL an advertisement was stuck within the text of this novel at the 91% completion mark (which I read on my iPad with the Kindle app) which shattered the the fictional world I was happily lapping up. Attached is a screen shot of this adv. which is also written in the past tense and posits that if I had enjoyed reading the book I should get the sequel. The problem is that the story was not over... there was more to come. My first thought is that this is where the book ended before its plot's conclusion, to be continued in the sequel. Not true. Why would you spoil the story with an advertisement?

This book is considerably different from his other Logan West/James Ryker masterpieces in that it addresses the very real jihadist training and plotting against...well, everybody. Thirteen is a numbered brother from a group of brainwashed, killer trained young men that have been selected for specific acts of terror. Exceptionally well written, as we have come to expect from Mr. Sinclair, and this one has a few suprises for the reader as the pages fly by in anticipation of the outcome. If you like fast paced action, conflicted characters and plenty of twists and turns, you have to read this book.

The first one-fourth of this book promised an original narrative rich in details about the intel side of the “war on terror.” The rest was a disappointingly standard, even trite story that was entirely predictable and without particular merit. Pure escapist fiction. It’ll hold your attention through a long flight, but it won’t leave you feeling nourished or informed. The last half, in particular, could have been plotted by a computer program.

5.0 out of 5 stars A timely, gripping and utterly shocking terrorism thriller!
Reviewed in Germany on March 11, 2018
Rob Sinclair has become a household name in the thriller genre. Yet SLEEPER 13 is something altogether different from his previous work. It is not only his best novel to date but easily one of the most intense and engrossing thrillers of the last decade!

Sinclair dives right into the action by pulling the metaphorical rug out from under his protagonist and sending him on a globetrotting hunt for revenge. Aydin is a fascinating guy to spend time with. Kidnapped at the age of nine to be trained as one of thirteen of the world’s most lethal human weapons, he is haunted by his traumatic experiences in the grueling training facility only known as “the Farm”. Now Aydin must choose between what’s right and what he has been conditioned to be, while simultaneously evading his former brothers in arms. Throughout the present day events, the reader is treated with glimpses of Aydin’s murky past that immerses them into his constant struggle to cling to humanity.

On the other hand, we have Rachel Cox, a dedicated SIS officer, who isn’t afraid to break the rules or even risk her career for the greater good. Trying to track down the elusive Thirteen for years, she might be the only one able to connect the dots in time. Cox analytical no-bullshit attitude makes for a great counterweight to Aydin’s emotionally torn state of mind. And it is exciting to see their respective quests set onto a collision course.

From beginning to end, SLEEPER 13 packs a breakneck pace, with cinematic action, shocking twists and great character moments lurking behind every turn. The main character has echoes of I AM PILGRIM and Gregg Hurwitz’s ORPHAN X. That said, the book quickly develops a unique feel of its own. The bottom line is this: Ben Coes, Brad Thor and Daniel Silva better watch out, because with Rob Sinclair a new player has made his entrance onto the stage of world-class terrorism thriller authors!

    5.0 out of 5 stars Sleeper 13
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 4, 2018
I make no secret that I am a big fan of this author. I first came across him with his Enemy trilogy and then the connected Ryker series. He also has a stand alone psychological thriller which was a bit different to the rest of his books but very good nevertheless. So, I was extremely excited when I heard of this, the start of another promising series.
The central theme of the book is terrorism; specifically the taking and brainwashing of 15 young boys for a specific task. Trained in the ways of jihad, we follow Aydin, number 13, as he realises that he is not sure he is up to the tasks that he has been set. In the present he has gone rogue after seeing a very disturbing news broadcast. This present day action is interspersed with flashbacks to his training showing his lack of conviction to the cause. We also have Rachel, an MI5 agent, who believes in the creation of this group of specially trained terrorists but she is alone in this belief. The story follows her as she tries to persuade her bosses that there is an attack coming. How she tries to get the help and assistance she wants and needs in order to thwart it.
This is a story told initially from two polar opposite directions, ones that will slowly come together. But as always, it's not the destination that is important. It's the journeys that the characters take that is the main crux of this first instalment and, believe me, you're going to want to buckle up as you are in for an action packed ride.
Well, I had extremely high expectations going in to this book. Indeed, I had been putting it off for a while as I was a little scared that it wouldn't quite match them. Stupid really as not only did it match them, it blew them away completely. In this book, the author has taken a theme that is very real and indeed prevalent in this day and age and woven an extremely credible, and therefore also a little frightening, story around it. I was very soon completely absorbed into the action, both around Aydin and Rachel, and read pretty much the entire book in only a couple of days with my heart in my mouth for the majority! There are layers upon layers, secrets lies and duplicitous behaviour for all involved. There are relationships that are tested, some surviving, others broken.
Not being up to date with the majority of the things that are described in the book, especially some of the technology and techniques employed by both sides of the "war", I can not tell you whether they are authentic or not. What I can say though, speaking as a lay person is that all that I read about in this book came across as completely credible within the explanations given. This gave the book a whole other layer of realism for me and, as I already mentioned, this made it a bit more scary to read.
All the rest of the things I love about this author were also present here in this book. His characterisation is spot on once again, as is his pacing. he also has the balance right between action, narrative and description so the overall book was well balanced. Obviously as the start of a series, this book does have to contain quite a bit of set up stuff which did on occasion slow things down a bit but it is a necessary evil as it is obvious that the story will continue in ongoing books.
All in all, another winner from one of my favourite authors, I really can't wait for book 2.
