- Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2016This is a mystery that is still unsolved. The unstable character of Joseph Moore is described in morose, gothic detail.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2005Books that combine beautifully written prose with wonderful characterisation, atmosphere and a story that wont let you go, are rare indeed. This is just such a book. If you read nothing else this year, you should read this.

4.0 out of 5 stars good insight into the time period and the background to ...
Interesting book if a bit dramatized, good insight into the time period and the background to the mystery. You will enjoy this if, like me, you enjoyed 'Doctor Who and the Horror of Fang rock' and have a love of the Scottish islands and light houses!

3.0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed the characterisations
A truly intriguing source story, and the novel tells it well when it sticks to actual events. I enjoyed the characterisations, but, sadly, was unconvinced by all the mystical stuff, and I felt the reporter character was a little redundant. Would have liked to see more of the families and local community reacting to the tragedy, but I guess that wasn't the novel Elliott wanted to write

3.0 out of 5 stars Lighthouse Drama
Interesting novel based on historical fact. Would have made the book more interesting if authentic historical photographs had been included.
