Something's Gotta Give: A Demonic Short Story (The Arbitratus) Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 8 ratings

An assignment in Hollywood? Sounds like paradise ...

Ronoven should have known better.
In Hell, nothing was ever as easy as it sounded.
Take a trip above, they said. Use your own name. Collect a movie star's soul. It'll be easy, they said.

And he bought it.
Hook. Line. And sinker.

Then he met Marilyn. An innocent; caught up in her own pain, in the whirlwind fame of Hollywood's heyday.

He couldn't save her life, but if he was willing to play the odds, he might just be able to save her soul.

Ben had always been a gambling man.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Something's Gotta Give is a glimpse into the life of the Demon Ronoven, before the events of Always Darkest, Book I in The Arbitratus Trilogy. In a way, this story is proof that some things never change.

A nice quick read. Ronoven is sent from the Pit of Help to snatch the soul of a celebrity, not what he wants to do because he's being singled out by Bhaal, a hell-god that doesn't like him. He goes anyway because it's a chance to walk in Earth for a week and it's his birthday! His emotions and personal feelings are put to the test as time draws near to reap the celebrity's soul and return to the Pit. A great story and I highly recommend this one!

I loved the premise of this book, and there is a wistful melancholy in what happens in the story. Unfortunately, the action is largely described (“told”) instead of dramatized (“shown”), so it doesn’t quite bring the realness and resonance that stronger technique might have allowed for. The idea had the potential of a real tear-jerker, but I just didn’t really feel anything while reading it. Full-Disclosure : I was suffering from Covid exhaustion when I read it, and this may have influenced the energy I was able to bring to it.

I didn't realize that this was a lead in to another book. I did enjoy Ben's heady enjoyment of the beach and the bar followed by his use of young women, after all, he is a demon. But he has a job to do. This left me wanting to follow with the Arbitratus Trilogy to see who or what wins.

I loved this quick read so much. It was definitely a delicious snack. I just can’t get enough of the characters they have created. I recommend reading Always Darkest first.

You never know what's going to happen or how it's going to end and find yourself questioning the demon's motives throughout. But don't predict this different short read because it has a twist. Love it!

I received this story in a book box and didn’t realize it was a companion piece to their novel until I started reading (I didn’t read the synopsis). I have to say, it was every bit as exciting as the novel was. I love getting extra insight to a character’s life. I highly recommend reading this and Always Darkest.

I'm not a big reader of good versus evil, but this story kept me enthralled. The internal conflict of the main character is what kept me riveted to the storyline. I will definitely continue following this character and these authors. Job well done!
