Something's Gotta Give: A Demonic Short Story (The Arbitratus) Kindle Edition
Ronoven should have known better.
In Hell, nothing was ever as easy as it sounded.
Take a trip above, they said. Use your own name. Collect a movie star's soul. It'll be easy, they said.
And he bought it.
Hook. Line. And sinker.
Then he met Marilyn. An innocent; caught up in her own pain, in the whirlwind fame of Hollywood's heyday.
He couldn't save her life, but if he was willing to play the odds, he might just be able to save her soul.
Ben had always been a gambling man.

About the authors
Jess and Keith Flaherty are one of those married couples sitcoms never get right. They have been together for over twenty years and still can’t get enough of each other’s company.
They live in the beautiful mountains of Vermont with their two children, three cats, a dog, and an immortal guinea pig. Jess has worked in newspaper and art publishing, freelance writing, cake decorating, and in addition to writing and editing, she works as the Program Manager and Educational/Vocational Specialist for a therapeutic home/transition program for young adults. She enjoys playing the ukulele badly, reading, and binge-watching unhealthy amounts of TV.
Keith spent many years as a chef and business manager, and now works with Jess in residential mental health as the program's Culinary Services Manager. In his free time, he enjoys writing poetry, reading, or cooking something his family will think is amazing.
As a couple, Jess and Keith love to cook together, go hiking, and spend time together and with their boys. Of course, they also love writing together. Their first book, Always Darkest, was recently called “A very different story,” and “A solid fantasy novel,” by fantasy icon, Piers Anthony, and fans have compared their style to a combination of Douglas Adams, George R.R. Martin, and Christopher Lamb.
From fantasy, to horror, to romance, to humor, if you check out Jess and Keith’s work, you won’t be disappointed!

- Reviewed in the United States on May 18, 2019A nice quick read. Ronoven is sent from the Pit of Help to snatch the soul of a celebrity, not what he wants to do because he's being singled out by Bhaal, a hell-god that doesn't like him. He goes anyway because it's a chance to walk in Earth for a week and it's his birthday! His emotions and personal feelings are put to the test as time draws near to reap the celebrity's soul and return to the Pit. A great story and I highly recommend this one!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2022I loved the premise of this book, and there is a wistful melancholy in what happens in the story. Unfortunately, the action is largely described (“told”) instead of dramatized (“shown”), so it doesn’t quite bring the realness and resonance that stronger technique might have allowed for. The idea had the potential of a real tear-jerker, but I just didn’t really feel anything while reading it. Full-Disclosure : I was suffering from Covid exhaustion when I read it, and this may have influenced the energy I was able to bring to it.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 5, 2019I didn't realize that this was a lead in to another book. I did enjoy Ben's heady enjoyment of the beach and the bar followed by his use of young women, after all, he is a demon. But he has a job to do. This left me wanting to follow with the Arbitratus Trilogy to see who or what wins.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2020I loved this quick read so much. It was definitely a delicious snack. I just can’t get enough of the characters they have created. I recommend reading Always Darkest first.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 18, 2018You never know what's going to happen or how it's going to end and find yourself questioning the demon's motives throughout. But don't predict this different short read because it has a twist. Love it!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2019I received this story in a book box and didn’t realize it was a companion piece to their novel until I started reading (I didn’t read the synopsis). I have to say, it was every bit as exciting as the novel was. I love getting extra insight to a character’s life. I highly recommend reading this and Always Darkest.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2018I'm not a big reader of good versus evil, but this story kept me enthralled. The internal conflict of the main character is what kept me riveted to the storyline. I will definitely continue following this character and these authors. Job well done!
