- Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2013Tom Thumb writes in a very engaging and humorous style about his decade or so of attending Rainbow Gatherings in Europe, as well as Israel and Thailand. Many of the things he describes are familiar to American gatherers, but there are some noticeable differences.
European gatherings are usually affairs of hundreds of people instead of thousands, and, there being almost no public lands like National forests, their gatherings are often in extremely out of the way places often at the ends of long hikes and climbs, on land that is, as he says it, "commercially worthless so no one objects to a temporary hippie village springing up for a month", and "remote enough that the local teenagers won't be driving in after the bar in the village closes"
Unlike American gatherings where there are several kitchens serving at a main circle and also at their individual locations thruout the day, there is always only one kitchen that serves only two times a day. And there don't seem to be the crews who keep returning to gatherings together gathering after gathering. Instead it is anybody's guess who is going to be showing up to work in the central kitchen, and there can be unpredictable periods of food inefficiency and hunger. A larger proportion of the attendees are full time road dogs, and there are fewer bills of large denominations going into the Magic Hat, so the supplies are not as luxuriant. The food at the breakfast circle he usually describes as "porridge" There is never anything like Kid Village breakfast or zu zu night at Lovin' Ovens.
And they have had to deal with harassment by law enforcement and dangers beyond what the US Forest Service ICTs have dished out. In Russia soldiers attacked right thru an om circle, slashed tents with knives, and took all of the attendees off to jail. In Bosnia, they had to watch out for leftover land mines.
And if his account is accurate, their gatherings are flashbacks to a lot of people's ideas of the golden days when the hippies with all their New Age pursuits still flourished. There are still music and dancing and healing workshops and nudity and cannabis and lots of chai tea and chapatis. I didn't read much about the goth punks, skinheads, pirates, and dirty kids which are numerous and sometimes predominate at American gatherings.
And his account seems believably accurate, for there are many words about all the problems with bad weather and organizational mixups and what we Yanks call "bliss ninnies" and all the other frustrations that are found at American gatherings. It is far from being a propaganda piece about the power of love with Hopi prophecies. All the dirty laundry is hung out in the rain and some of it even gets mildewed. But he seems to revel in all the inconstancy and unpredictability that the anarchism brings. He acts like he loved it when there was cold a freezing rain for two weeks.
It's a professional quality book that was laid out by a knowledgeable typesetter, and the best part of it is right before the end, where he examines the real relationship between the Rainbow and Babylon.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2013I bought this book for my parents-in-law, so that they could have a better idea of how I meet their daughter, in an Italian Rainbow Gathering several years ago. The author's is a talented storyteller and was able to succesfully synthetizes in funny short stories this beautiful underground culture (which I whink should go mainstream asap for the health of humankind). A great introductory book. I hope it would encourage many people to participate in Rainbow Gatherings, which are a cultural gift to our overall society, in my opinion.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2014there's a bunch of rainbow books. one buy a prof in buffalo that's a nice accompaniment to this. i like tom thumbs unease and personality. it gives the book a personal touch however by doing that the book is sort of seeing the rainbow through his very biased personal eyes. if you like him--a kind of elitist nice woody allen-ish nervous guy style writing then you'll like this. its an important issue, since one wonders of such utopian groups have any future whatsoever and what goes wrong. this book provides insight ihto it. if on the other hand you want a kind of relaxed academic book that's still intimate and close up but more concerned with government crackdowns on the rainbow then buy the professor's book michael niman.they're different and both are good.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2013A place we should all visit but most won't. Whether or not it is deep inside a forest or deep inside ourselves. A book about a leaderless events (gatherings) that sidestep anarchy. It's a funny dance to watch or to join in. I enjoyed reading this book for one reason above all others. It opens up the world of the Rainbow to everyone who reads it. We are all Rainbow but not everyone knows. Maybe you have forgotten but in reading 'Somewhere Under The Rainbow' you may begin to remember. I have attended Rainbow Gatherings for the last twenty years, big & small, in Europe and in the U.S. I find that the book covers the basic facts of how a gathering functions and has many funny little stories inside stories. The Rainbow way is the way of the peaceful survivalist. It's possible you might learn something you may need from reading this book even if you were to never attend a gathering. The book is not written in the art of a snobby spiritualist but a realistic human one. We are all searching for things we can't easily define, so we color it with humor. Humor just being another fabric in the color of the Rainbows. I really liked the weaving of the book and an ending that makes you remember what compassion is. as always Love
- Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2013There are travelers in this world - and then there are explorers. The author of this book seems to be the later. It's not enough for him (Tom Thumb) to just visit a place, but instead he searches for the 'heart and soul' of a place. From reading this book, and from reading his first book Hand to Mouth to India I get the distinct impression that the 'heart and soul' of any place is less in the location and more within ourselves - its' what we bring to this world that makes it alive.
Somewhere Under the Rainbow is an educational, adventurous, and ultimately FUN look into a world of explorers who journey not only through the land but also through their own personal pie slice of the universe (of which we are only a physical manifestation of). But I'll avoid waxing poetically on my own philosophies..
The point is very simply this: if you're curious about The Rainbow, if you're a veteran of The Rainbow, if you're looking to advance beyond the realms of travel and are interested in exploring life, or if you're in the mood to learn; to be entertained; to question; and to enjoy a solid good read. Invest yourself in Tom's tale of what happens Somewhere Under the Rainbow. I promise 'there's no place like (this) home'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rare insight
Tom has managed to provide a wonderful insight into a culture that is often hidden from those in "Babylon". I believe it is written in an open and honest manner that many will appreciate and understand. His humour and approach to talking about the Rainbows shows a maturity that breaks the common views of easy happy go lucky hippy culture.
This is really an excellent book for anybody who is interested in what the Rainbow culture is about and what happened to so many of those hippies from the 60s. His deep love for subject is clear and the book concise and a wonderfully fun read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sehr schöner Erfahrungsbericht

Yes, I loved it! Tom Thumb has written a lovely book about the Gatherings. His story is funny, sober, respectful, inspiring and grounded, told like only a Rainbow Brother can tell it.
