Space Team: Planet of the Japes Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 1,251 ratings

"Like crack for my eyeballs!" - Amazon Reviewer

While trying to stop a cyber-attacker stealing all Space Team's hard-earned money, the cyborg, Mech, unlocks a secret partition in his hard drive, revealing a mysterious set of co-ordinates.

The co-ordinates lead the team to Funworld, a planet-sized theme park with a worrying number of artificially intelligent clownbots, and a shocking disregard for Health & Safety.

With no weapons, and a shapeshifter who can no longer shift shape, Space Team's quest to unlock Funworld's mysteries leads them deep into the planet's core - and to the horrors that inhabit it - where they uncover the shocking secret Mech had no idea he was keeping.

Featuring space clowns, the second-last human alive, and at least one fleeting reference to Scooby Doo, Space Team: Planet of the Japes is the seventh hilarious book in the internationally bestselling Space Team series.

About the Author

Phil Thron is a classically trained actor who has worked on stage, TV, and behind the microphone for several decades. A voracious reader and a devoted chatterbox, bringing these skills to the world of audiobook narration was a natural evolution, and for several years now, a wonderful obsession. Now, nothing gives him more pleasure than bringing authors' worlds to life and getting listeners to lean in. When he's not recording from his home studio in New Jersey, Phil can be found playing tennis, reading or listening to books, watching movies, spending time with his family, and, perhaps, playing guitar. Badly. Really badly. Don't laugh, it's just an unfortunate truth.

Barry Hutchison is an award-winning children's author and screenwriter. His first book - INVISIBLE FIENDS: MR MUMBLES - was published in 2010 to critical acclaim. The book went on to win the Royal Mail Award for Scottish Children's Books in 2011, by which point two more books in the horror series had been published.

In 2012 HarperCollins Children's Books published Barry's comedy fantasy novel, THE 13TH HORSEMAN, which was even more well-received than MR MUMBLES, with fans including the multi-award-winning best-selling author, Neil Gaiman. Shortly after Horseman won the Scottish Children's Book Award, a sequel - The Book of Doom - was published.

Since 2008 Barry has written over fifty books for children, including several based on the hit Cartoon Network show, BEN 10. When not writing he is usually visiting schools and libraries to run events and story-writing workshops for kids and adults alike.

He recently wrote thirty-six episodes of the CITV comedy series, BOTTOM KNOCKER STREET, starring comedian Phill Jupitus.

Barry lives in the Highlands of Scotland with his wife, Fiona, and their two children, Kyle and Mia. His biggest fear is that someone will one day discover how much fun his job is and immediately put a stop to it. His second biggest fear is squirrels.

Cal Carver is such a likable goofball I just really enjoy spending time with him. His friends on board the spaceship, called “Currently Untitled,” are also an important part of the attraction of all these stories... through thick and thin (including a planet full of scary clown monsters in this book) the crew has a great chemistry.

I really like how the author keeps his sci fi rolling forward with lots of action at all times but still manages to include small moments for each of the characters to reveal themselves and grow.

Also I have to say that this is one of the few series that I have seen advertised as “humorous” that is actually funny. Definitely makes me laugh out loud at times.

Barry never ceases to entertain with Cal Carver and the Space Team and Planet of the Japes is no different. Funny where it should be, exciting when it should be, and entertaining throughout. But. I don't like books with cliffhanger endings even if it will be wrapped up in the next book (see Wrath of Vajazzle and Search for Splurt). So the ending here left me a bit frustrated. Still though, this is the Space Team so frustration is sometimes built in, but always resolved.

    Remarkable. Flawlessly executed.

As a series you hit the nail on the head for developing your characters as individuals and as a team. You managed to create scenarios to isolate every one of them with a different member so as readers we could see 1 on 1 interactions between all of them, not just the main character. Your use of humor was spot on, and your recurring jokes were done with excellent timing.

I can't give you higher praise other than saying you're an amazing writer and I anxiously hope you keep developing this series.

After saving the multiverse, where can you really go? To a location that's been locked away in Mech's memory, of course! What could possibly go wrong? Yet another Space Team adventure I couldn't put down. I love getting to know more background of the team members. Hilarious, scary, and adorable. Ok, Splurt is adorable. But we already knew that.

Sounds like a fun place to visit.... until you get there. The team dives into another adventure, space adventure that is, and learns some very interesting facts about one of their members. Clowns sure can be a tough group... and space clowns really are their own brand of tough. This is a fitting addition to the space teams adventures.

No. No there is not. Have you been japed for buying and reading this book? Yes. Yes you have been. Having had your growing fear of clowns fully developed, will you look to see if there is another ridiculous, moronic, idiotic, piece of space drivel (did you see how I made drivel sound so much better by calling it space drivel) available for wasting your perfectly good money on? Yes. Yes you will. I pity the fool! (Quote from Mr. T)

This has to be my favourite book out of the series. The humor is so well matched by the gore that it makes it for the most perfect read. Characters we've JUST met are fully fleshed and amazing. Seriously, bravo. If you want to give yourself a present, get the audio book.

While, in my opinion, not one of the better books in the series, (think The Search for Spurt, The Guns of Nana Joan and, Return of the Dead Guy), Planet of the Japes was still a bit of a fun read. I'm sure my aversion to clowns played a role in that opinion for me.

It was cool to get more background on Mech, especially since it led to more questions that I look forward to having answered.

And as a life-long Scooby Doo fan, the references made me smile.

It did feel as if this novel was rushed a bit as there were quite a few areas proofreading seems to have missed.

    Now, on to book 8!

A laugh filled romp through a planet of fun. The clowning hardly stops. Cal and his pals make new friends, make big mistakes and stuff explodes. So yes it is the crazy fun as usual with Space Team. An excellent seventh episode in the series.

Seriously hahahahaha. Let’s just say I have always hated those painted face circus things. Not as much as Cookie from the undead by RR Haywood (different books but also awesome read). But close to it. This is sick. To be fair I’m beginning to wonder about Mechs origins now. I have suspicions. Anyway I can’t say much more without a spoiler alert. Suffice to say. Funny, exciting, gory, ludicrous, infuriating and brilliant. But not necessarily in that order. Or at least a mixture of that order repeated randomly. Barry you are pure genius!! By the was if this ever gets made into a series it will be awesome and a little scary!!

Just as readable as the earlier books, and just as enjoyable. Seemed strange to have Miz going back to her earlier lascivious ways with Cal, but then the Loren and Miz sparks fly a bit more. Only 4 stars because I had to have two goes at reading it, as opposed to the "all nighters" for the other 6! Still a fonking good read ;-)

A great big laugh out loud, hold your breath fonking space adventure with a twist in the tale.
Again, well written and imaginative featuring my favourite disfunctional heroes and again, cannae wait 'till the next episode.
Just one more thing.... can't help but wondering if Geronimus Krone is some future version of Cal, locked away for "crimes" against the universe (The Pandorica Opens: subtle Dr Who reference). Time will tell (see what I fonking did there).
    Bring it on, Barry....
