Space Team: The Time Titan of Tomorrow Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 1,121 ratings

Cal Carver's time is about to run out.

He and his Space Team are broke. Forced to take low-paying gun-for-hire jobs just to keep the food replicator working, their prospects are not looking good.

When they pick up a distress signal from a luxury space cruiser, they think their luck might be about to change. And it does. Sadly, not in the way they'd hoped.

Someone has detonated a Time Bomb aboard the cruiser - an experimental device designed to shatter time itself. As the team passes through the fragments, their personal timelines begin moving at very different speeds, and an ageing Cal is forced to live out decades aboard the ship surrounded by his now statue-like crew mates and the mutated, inbred descendants of the cruiser's former inhabitants.

As if that isn't bad enough, the Time Bomb was just a test for the real weapon - a weapon that could spell a fate worse than death for Space Team, and the enslavement of the entire galaxy.

Featuring giant space babies, reverse mermaids and the most dangerous man in existence, Space Team: The Time Titan of Tomorrow is the eighth fast and frantic adventure in the Space Team comedic scifi series.

Barry Hutchison is an award-winning children's author and screenwriter. His first book - INVISIBLE FIENDS: MR MUMBLES - was published in 2010 to critical acclaim. The book went on to win the Royal Mail Award for Scottish Children's Books in 2011, by which point two more books in the horror series had been published.

In 2012 HarperCollins Children's Books published Barry's comedy fantasy novel, THE 13TH HORSEMAN, which was even more well-received than MR MUMBLES, with fans including the multi-award-winning best-selling author, Neil Gaiman. Shortly after Horseman won the Scottish Children's Book Award, a sequel - The Book of Doom - was published.

Since 2008 Barry has written over fifty books for children, including several based on the hit Cartoon Network show, BEN 10. When not writing he is usually visiting schools and libraries to run events and story-writing workshops for kids and adults alike.

He recently wrote thirty-six episodes of the CITV comedy series, BOTTOM KNOCKER STREET, starring comedian Phill Jupitus.

Barry lives in the Highlands of Scotland with his wife, Fiona, and their two children, Kyle and Mia. His biggest fear is that someone will one day discover how much fun his job is and immediately put a stop to it. His second biggest fear is squirrels.

This is a seminal book in the Space Team series. If you have read this far, and read them in order, then you’re likely already invested in the team and are relieved that they have survived the intense adventures they’ve gone through in... the very few weeks they have been together. Boy. Do they go through some (more) stuff in this book.

Barry has infused the book with his characteristic humor and a good amount of light-heartedness, but at the core, this book delves into the heart of Cal Carver, his relationships with his team, and especially his relationship with his best friend, Splurt.

Comedic Sci Fi isn’t supposed to pull at your heart strings like this. Yet, wow. Does this ever.

I hate to write anything that might be a spoiler for the book. Whether you read it or listen to the audiobook version (read by the incredibly talented Phil Thron), this book will make you laugh, make you cry, make you wonder, and may make you angry. But you will find out things you’ve always wondered about, too. That’s all I can say without giving it away.

It may break your heart (as it did mine the first time I read it), but hold fast, dear reader.

You may hate certain glassware for the rest of your natural life. That’s a small price to pay, all in all.

Things can — and will — only get better. Well. At least weirder? Okay. Weirder. That’s a Cal Carver Guarantee (double finger-guns and a big ole, teary smile).

    Spoilet Alert [sort of]!!!
    *************************
Things took a bit of a serious turn for a bit in this book. I kept waiting for the humor to kick in, nope, it got darker still. It actually seemed like the whole series was about to just end. Then, all was back to it's usual rampant hilarity once more. This is not a complaint. The drama and intensity were very well done and rather compelling (in more ways than wondering where the punchline was). There is a lot of hidden depth to this series and in this book, the depth gets deeper and the work even more impressive. I'm often bored with a series by now (having binged all of them up to this one after the other, kinda like the literary version of one's newest Netflix obsession ... or, perhaps one's Amazon Prime video account? ^_^). However with this series I find myself turning page after page (virtually ... I use a Kindle), and now nearly pacing the floor waiting for the next volume to be released. Well, time to start on the author's other series, then. ;)

The team is at it again, this time with some time twists added. Cal and the team have a new adventure and it takes 50 years, or does it? A nice addition to the series with the usual misguided fun.

This was a good foray for me back into the space team. I had read the earlier books a while ago then just got back into this series. It is just as much fun as I remembered. Lots of action, lots of snark from Cal, and Kevin is still awesome. I am glad to see there are more books and look forward to what if anything happens for Miz. I recommend this series.

I've been reading (and laughing all during) the Space Team series from Book 1, loved every one, and recommend reading the entire series. Almost every page of every book has something that makes you at a minimum smile. Many, many times I have laughed so hard that eyes tear up and I have to put down my kindle and wipe my eyes. This book has many of those ROFL moments (some clustered together on two pages). Barry Hutchinson has created a wonderful set of characters set in imaginative situations. This is not Star Trek science fiction--more like Sci/Fi by Dave Barry. It's a whole new genre joining humor and Sci/Fi.

So if you haven't started this series, take a chance and buy the first one. Soon you'll be hooked and can't wait to read the next book.

How could answering a distress call lead to the worst day in the Space Teams brief history together?

Well, if you've read the previous books in the series, you probably already know that this group of unlikely, totally non-heroesque rejects have a Murphy's Law kinda day every day.

Barry Hutchison pulls out all the stops, laughs, action and emotion in this eighth novel of the series. We get to see sides to all of the Team that we've only glimpsed before. And I'm jumping right into book nine in the next 60 seconds.

The past is gone, the future never comes, so we're left with only the gift of today, which is why they call it the present. Then some shizznod writes a story that messes it all up and doesn't fix it all with a Cal Carver ending.
  • Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2018
I love everything I've read by Barry Hutchison, and I wasn't disappointed by this addition to his Space Team story arc. This group of misfit aliens have bounced around the galaxy, repeatedly save the galaxy and even the universe multiple times. They've gotten no reward or recognition for their efforts, however, since they've been responsible for creating the crises. In Time Titan, Cal Carver, formerly of earth, and the rest of the Space Team, race to stop the worst tyrant and mass-murder in the entire history of the galaxy. Unfortunately, this same tyrant was on the loose thanks to the Space Team, so they kind of owe it to the galaxy to capture him before he wipes out entire races (again).

5.0 out of 5 stars In Space there is no Mush
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 18, 2018
The Space Team return with a non-stop all action adventure dealing with time and space mainly it has to be said thanks to the lack of Mush (food replicator resource). As we know when Cal gets it in to his head to solve a problem anything can happen and after a mission to capture an evil fiend leaves them with a huge bill the lure of a rich folk filled space passenger liner in distress is too good to pass up. Of course things go poorly but never fear it gets worse and with the fate of freedom in the universe at peril and Space Team are the only ones on scene well we are all space mush!
Barry once again delivers a fast faced and fun filled comedic space adventure and I'll admit this novel delivered emotional high and lows and a couple of times I had to just put the book down and take a breath, unexpected emotional knife in the guts both in a good and bad way:)
For me this novel is back to form after the previous one didn't really hit the high bar set by the series and it sets up what I expect to be a tremendous next novel, no space pressure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cal saves time.
Reviewed in Australia on February 8, 2018
Not satisfied with saving the Universe, Cal now brings his mixture of unparallelled ineptitude and luck to combat a threat to time itself. The laughs are longer, the incivility greater and the stakes are higher. But the pathos and comradeship nicely balance the comedy to deliver a thoroughly enjoyable and entrancing read. This is likely the funniest and saddest and most riotous adventure yet.

    5.0 out of 5 stars I laughed, I cried...
Reviewed in Canada on February 26, 2018
Barry writes in a way that totally makes me laugh out loud and draws vivid pictures in my head. Every Space Team book has been engaging with a side of touching emotional connection that makes you desperate for the next book so you can see how your team is doing. You can't go wrong getting this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected...
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 14, 2018
If you're this far along in the journey, you about know what to expect from these books...

...is what I thought going in. I had no idea what was coming.

This is probably my favourite installment in the series to date, with the comedy being balanced with a heaping of pathos that seriously took me from left-field. I pre-order every 'Space Team' book now, with absolutely no doubt in my mind whatsoever that I will receive a great, laugh-out-loud, story every time.

Nothing I've read in at least the last 15 years has made me laugh as much as this series has, and I recommend it to everybody that gives any sort of hint that they enjoy reading at all.

Barry J. Hutchison is, to me, in the same league as Douglas Adams, and I can't recommend his work highly enough.
