Holden Russell let his job consume his life for too long, and it took his wife leaving for him to realize it’s time for a change. His marriage is over, but he’s determined to do right by his kids, starting with fewer hours at work and more with them. Except it’s no longer the kids competing with his job for his attention. It’s Holden competing for their attention… with their new live-in nanny. Their very hot male live-in nanny.

Porter Blake never saw himself becoming a nanny, but okay. After burnout and PTSD drove him from his job as a paramedic, he’s desperate for something new, and it turns out the nanny gig isn’t so bad. The pay is decent, the stress is manageable, the kids are great, and their mom is cool. It’s the ex-husband he’s not so sure about.

The situation is awkward enough when Porter and Holden are butting heads. When they find some common ground and their mutual attraction becomes too much to ignore, things are bound to get complicated.

And unless they want Porter to lose his job, they’re going to have to fly under the ex-wife’s radar. Except secrets like this have a way of coming out…

This standalone novel is approximately 115,000 words long.

I've always loved L.A. Witt's writing and this book shows why. The characters are lovely, relatable and very intriguing. Despite a few bumps along the road the HEA counts for all of it. I love it and will read once or ten times again.

This seems like a case where family matters in a completely different way. Everyone in this story cares about the kids but they don't always agree on what that needs to look like. I got frustrated at times on how their personal relationship was run over by others. But it was worth pushing through to the wonderful ending to this story. I listened to the audio version and it was very well done.

4.5 Stars. I liked how Holden strove to be better. He knew he wasn't a good dad in the past and was determined to be better, even if it meant swallowing his pride and learning from Porter. I liked how they slowly went from dislike (on Holden's side) to love. They were very compatible. The kids were cute and complex, I liked that. The ex wasn't the typically evil woman character; she wasn't bitter or mean because Holden failed as a father/husband in the past. She does get a little crazy about the "don't date the nanny/my ex" thing though. She genuinely cares about Holden and Porter. It's a great book; long but great.

Enjoyable, though slow paced, very domestic, main characters all likeable- it’s nice that everyone who’s an adult talks to the other adults like adults, and I liked that the many children of the large blended family all have distinct and easily pictured personalities, especially since they have so much page time. The complexities of the situation were handled well and everyone putting the kids first all the time was nice too.

I keep using the word “nice” instead of “great” or “amazing” which is why this book gets a solid 3 stars from me. Suffers a but from telling instead of showing all the way through but especially at the beginning with some rather tedious infodumps. Nothing groundbreaking here, but all the usual tropes about mutual pining and secretly dating are managed well. I just found myself speed skimming through a lot of repetitive inner voice monologues about the same old same old same old low stakes angst - tediously covered twice because each character had to go through their entire (basically exactly the same) mental hand wringing in their subsequent individual chapters -and, I’m sorry to say, the sex scenes, which were pretty average, standard fare and after a while just felt like extra filler.

I’m not sure the employee/employer potential power imbalances were given the screen time they likely deserved, but in the end the biggest conflict would ultimately be how the kids would manage if things went badly, and that did get the level of attention it needed (although it went on way too repetitively and definitely for too long. The book could have done a better story in 2/3 its length).

I love L.A.'s writing. I haven't read a thing I didn't wholly enjoy. But this...This hit me where I needed it to today. A wonderful and inevitable love story that made me smile so hard my cheeks were hurting but also had me on the verge of tears for an hour. I always know it's a good story when I go through the rainbow of emotions while being too engrossed to notice until it's done. Will definitely reread this...a lot.

This is what it says on the tin. The characters are sweet, they try to be good to reach other and the kids, and their problems are mostly things they've done to themselves.

Content note: Small bit of homophobia against a secondary character by a tertiary character. Separately, a noisy neighbor makes assumptions and is nasty about it, but she gets shut down pretty fast

I loved the relationships between all of the main characters.. Although in the beginning I thought about giving up on the book because it was moving so slow I stick with it and the story picked up and although I didn't really care for Tiffany at one point she did with me over by the end. Porter and Holden were absolutely adorable. Read the book and you'll see what I mean.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sweet divorcee-falls-for-manny romance!
Reviewed in Australia on February 22, 2023
Divorced, now-single father Holden is feeling usurped when he moves back to re-establish a relationship with his kids, only to find that Tiffany, his ex-wife, has hired a very competent male nanny that has kids adore. While he tries to pick holes in Porter’s care of his children, Holden soon realises Porter is a pretty amazing person as well as a great nanny. I liked the story and most of the characters in this sweet romance but I thought Porter and Holden bought into Tiffany’s fears and demands too much and that didn’t feel realistic. There were some engaging subplots but there was a far bit of rehashing Holden and Porter’s thoughts and while that didn’t rankle too much, cutting it would make the story crisper. Audio narrator Michael Ferraiuolo is a firm favourite and he was perfect here.

Screwiest family dynamic that just gets odder, even to the end, with a memorable proposal. Just when you can’t see a way to resolve all the problems, they do, in style. Liked this a lot.
