- Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI've mentioned that I'm not a huge fan of Glynn Stewart. He tends to over-emphasize some aspects of his tale that I feel would be better set aside as they often don't really enhance the plot or the characters. But I do understand why he does it.
However, in this spinoff from the Scattered Stars: Conviction series, we actually get a somewhat decent character in EB. He's not all that good. He's a bit of a coward, and more broken than I think makes for a truly interesting character, but when he's pushed into a corner he stands up for the right in an entertaining way.
This is a low four star tale. It has flaws, but was still interesting and definitely leaves me interested in the possibilities in the next book in this series.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchasePlease read the author’s cautionary note before reading. Some of the subject matter is very disturbing.
The Beyond, the outer reaches of human space where the strong, the clever and the quick survive - until they meet someone stronger, quicker or more clever. This is where EB flies his freighter, trying to earn a living for himself and his crew. Each of the crew is running away from something. EB is running from Brisingr assassins who have targeted every ace in the Apollo 303 Nova Strike Group. He is hoping to lose himself in the Beyond. That’s not all EB is running from.
This is a great start to a new series in the Scattered Stars universe. A story where a freighter captain and crew come to the realization that you can’t run forever and find something worth fighting and possibly dying for. Nice plot twists, great characters and plenty of action in this dark story from the Beyond where the worst and best of humanity struggle to survive.
I received an ARC for my review and I purchased my own copy to support the author.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAccording to the author, from its inception the Scattered Stars universe was designed to be a casually associated group of 3 to 5 novel cycles. In Conviction, Glynn Stewart does a fine job of bridging the divide between continuing on with a familiar universe and cast of characters and moving on to a new set of characters in the same overarching universe.
The initial rejection of military force and service by many of the characters in this cycle makes the early part of the novel come move more slowly than many of Glynn Stewarts other works, but it also allows him space and time to develop the new cast of characters.
However by the end you are pulling for EB and the Evasion's crew. And as always Glynn Stewart give you plenty to speculate over as the storyline continues forward.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis first book was entertaining and engaging, with well defined characters and a multithreaded plot which is suitably resolved by the end of this book. There is one short line at the end which leads into the next installment.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhile I was disappointed that we weren't going to be seeing more of Kids and her crew , EB's story more than makes up for it. Calling Evasion a solid start is a.bit like calling diamonds hard. Just as there is much more than hardness that appeals with the diamond there is are additional layers of appeal to Evasion. We get.to.meet several fascinating and complex characters with hidden depths we very.much would like to know more about while getting glimpses here and there that build the anticipation.
I am VERY much looking forward to reading what comes next for EB, Trace, Vexer, and the crew as the make their way onward hoping to finally leave the ghosts that haunt them behind.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is a great romping novel. However , pronouns aside (which are fine(ish) (btw mine are she/it), this love story between the captain and navigator is WAY too much. Detracting from the story that doesn’t need this much detail. Captains kissing navigators on the head ? Come on give me a break. Be gay, have have a boyfriend, al fine. But too much in this novel!. Keep it up and I’m disconnecting!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI have been following Glynn since I read Space Carrier Avalon, the first book of the Castle Federation series. And each new book, and each new series, I am left wondering how he manages to come up with different details for propulsion systems, weapons, armor...that I find logical, that...work...for me.
Evasion follows the same pattern, even though set in the same universe as the Scattered Stars series - except, it expands into the details as to how the "headwear" works - the ability to manipulate software and hardware with and within your brain. In the other series, it just works - this book goes into the how of how it works. Brilliant!

5.0 out of 5 stars a stunner
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA book full of characters that are very real and either war or just plain evil. The twists are well constructed and very believable. Hopefully the next book will not be long in coming

5.0 out of 5 stars Another brilliant series
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseFast paced, thoroughly engaging and made me smile more than once from some thoroughly heartwarming sections that somehow melded in perfectly with the action and intrigue.
You can read this without reading the other scattered stars series, but it does help. It also is well recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI enjoyed the story but much prefer the other parts of this world. I don’t find the merchant stories as enjoyable. Still loved the writing and the action. I would recommend this to all the fans.
