- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2018I thoroughly enjoyed this collection. I am familiar with Mr. Damanda’s work from the NoSleep Podcast. He has quickly become one of my favorite contributors to the show. These stories were as well-written and engaging as I expected. Standouts for me are “As Helen Remembered It” and “The Paris Green Solution” as I am a fan of historical fiction, which Damanda writes beautifully. What I love most about Damanda’s work is that it is not only scary and disturbing in the best possible way, it is also expertly crafted. He is a truly gifted author.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2024I have read soooooo many horror anthologies, and this is one of the very few in which I didn't skip stories. Each story was different and fresh and free of the clichés that you normally find in horror. Thank you for a great reading experience!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2017Marcus Damanda knows how to tell a fantastic story. This is evident from the first page. His voice shines strong in this collection, a confident, masterful conglomeration of excellent short stories. From ghosts to brutal revenge, Damanda takes you on a journey using his amazing talents to establish scenes of terrifying and sometimes grisly consequence. The first story in the book, American White Hair, is a great introduction to the collection and lets the reader know that things are going to get uncomfortable in the best kind of way.
One of my favorite aspects of this book is that you're never quite sure what you're getting into. The stories are varied and each time you begin a new one, you're not sure what to expect. It's like Damanda is leading you down a dark hallway, telling you to trust him, and yet you know he has a knife behind his back. How or when he chooses to strike is both terrifying and fantastic.
A great read from a great author.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2017This is a collection of short stories sure to stir up psychological echos long after you finish reading. The stories are varied in their focus, which makes for a thrilling read. You are not really sure what you are going to get next. Marcus Damanda has a way of creating vivid images that help to bring the stories alive. Some of my favorites involve characters from other Demanda stories that are explored further - love that. I also really appreciated the final story, while not necessarily macabre, as are most of the stories in this collection, Demanda tells a touching story of loss that must have come from a personal experience. Can't wait to read more of Damanda.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2017Which flavor do you prefer indeed, this collection of stories has something for all types of horror fans. The realism of some of these stories kept my heart pounding while the surreal ones were excellent at building tension while suspending my disbelief at fantastic levels. This is a horror writer worth following. Marcus Damanda is an artist in conducting the orchestra of of tempo and suspense for every story he writes. If you haven't picked up a copy yet pick up two.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2018I bought this book already knowing that I appreciate and enjoy Marcus Damanda’s writing. If you have not experienced any of his tales yet I recommend you pick this up posthaste. Certainly not for the faint of heart. A mix of the weird, the cerebral and the nauseating (all of which are meant in a complimentary way that I think horror fans will understand) the stories in this book have truly unique characters and twists. It reminds me that horror is not always a jump scare or the usual tropes - sometimes it slowly creeps up on you and horrifies you.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 3, 2017Marcus Damanda's book of short stories has something for every horror fan. Stories of tormented ghosts and red velvet cake. Of a man who has sinister plans for any who dare enter his home when he is on vacation. The title story is probably my favorite. Being a teacher, the horror of standardized testing was all too real.
I highly recommend Standard Deviations to anyone that wishes to have a nice night of no sleep.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2017I first heard Marcus's stories on the NoSleep podcast, and became a fan instantly, this book shows his ability to craft not only great psycho's but a world that plays on fears for every person to lose sleep over, thanks for the nightmares!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing read, horror with a human touch. Buy this book!
Shamefully this book had set on my shelf for too long before reading it. I’d heard a couple of the stories on the fantastic NoSleep Podcast…but there’s something about reading it for yourself, at your own pace, that hits a different nerve.
I decided to take it on holiday recently, and these are the perfect tales for idling at airports as the sun goes down, by the glow of airplane lights when all around you are sleeping, or in those hours of the night when sleep escapes you. They might be short stories, but the characters and their deeds will stay with you long after you’ve put the book down.
Each tale has its own unique flavour, from the horror of the supernatural, to the depravity of real life, interspersed with touching and personal moments.
I can’t recommend this collection highly enough, not only to fans of horror, but to anyone who likes to feel something when they read. Each story, whether its grounded in reality, or exploring the demonic and paranormal, pulls you in with a distinctly human element – and that emotion is what makes the book such as fantastic read.
A couple of standouts are The Paris Green Solution, The Fetal Position, and I Listen to the Ground Scream.
Unfortunately, I don’t have the book anymore. My girlfriend snuck a read while I was sleeping one night, and demanded I leave it with her. I told her on one condition, that she donates it to a local book store once she’s finished so someone else can enjoy the horror of Standard Deviations…and bring Marcus Damanda’s terrifying tales to Malaysia.
I’d give six stars if I could.
