Stand Your Ground: A gripping thriller that you won't be able to put down (A Torsten Dahl Thriller) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 967 ratings

FAMILY THREATENED ON VACATION.
HUNTED AND WITH NO CHANCE OF RESCUE.
HOW WOULD YOU SURVIVE?

An idyllic family vacation in Barbados goes terribly wrong when Torsten Dahl is spotted by the one man with reason to hate him most in all the world.

With his marriage already crumbling and his defenses down, Dahl is finding it hard to switch between the soldier’s discipline and a family unit. When their hotel is attacked by gunmen they are forced to flee blindly with no phones, no ID, and no money. It gets worse when Dahl realizes his wife, two daughters and himself are being singled out and hunted down by a dangerous army that includes corrupt local authorities.

As the chase continues through Barbados’s darkening streets, aboard a pirate cruise ship, and amidst a festive carnival parade, Dahl realizes there are even deeper nightmares abroad tonight. The island’s prime minister is under threat. The leader of one of the world’s most violent drug cartels has arrived.

And though instincts say run, hide, just survive, there is only one thing a man like Dahl will do when his wife and daughters come under direct threat.

Torsten Dahl is an ex-Swedish Special Forces warrior, now working for a U.S. Government agency. He is trying to keep his marriage together by taking a much-needed vacation to Barbados with his wife and two daughters. In the airport, just prior to departure, he spots his most dreaded enemy, Grant the Facilitator, a man famous for brokering death and destruction everywhere he goes, and who has sworn vengeance against Dahl for the deaths of his family as a result of an operation with the Russian mob that Dahl and his team thwarted.
In Barbados, Dahl discovers that not only is Grant after him, but the head of a Mexican drug cartel is after him as well, to avenge the death of his brother in a raid by Dahl’s team.
Struggling to keep his marriage together, Dahl must also struggle with the conflict between being a husband and father and his instincts as a warrior. The two come together when he has to fight to keep his family alive, and at the same time end a deadly conspiracy that the Facilitator has brokered between the drug lord and the crooked prime minister.
Stand Your Ground by David Leadbeater is nonstop action from page one, as Dahl and his family learn one immutable truth; when your family is threatened, you have but one choice—stand your ground. The story doesn’t unwind, it snaps like a broken violin string, catching the reader up in the action as the good guys struggle to stay alive against almost impossible odds.
This is the first in the Torsten Dahl series, with promise of even greater adventures to come. It sucks you in and grabs you by the throat like a leopard catching unwary prey, and shakes you until the end, when you’ll find yourself gasping for breath.

I have to admit that reading all of David Leadbeater's previous books whereTorsten Dahl is part of a team, I was a bit skeptical as to how he could pull off a story where Torsten alone carries the storyline for the entire book. That skepticism quickly vanished after only a few pages. This book gives us a glimpse into Dahl's private life and the struggles he has to deal with trying to save his marriage along with protecting his family from enemies bent on exacting revenge for previous encounters with Dahl that didn't work out too well for them. I agree with other reviewers when they say this a read that's hard to put down. You don't need to read previous books to enjoy this one. Great from beginning to end. If any of this is true, might want to stay away from Barbados :-)

This was my first David Leadbeater book and I picked a good one. There are a couple of themes at work here. While on the surface it is an action adventure involving a hard man, it also explores the duality of being a soldier and a husband and father. The story moved forward nicely and well paced. The main character, Torsten Dahl, the Mad Swede alluded to in the title of this review, is a fantastic addition to the ranks of pulp style action characters. Johanna was a welcome addition as the wife that goes through some changes of her own and was a good support character. I want more of the Swede!

David Leadbeater is one of a small handful of writers who write in this genre and they are all very good. But this particular book is no where as good as Leadbeater's other stories. My best comment is if you haven't bought and read it by now, have no fear. Read his prior volumes. This story-line feels 'forced' and I was uncomfortable, wishing I was reading another book.

While Dahl's Mad Swede persona is familiar to readers of the Matt Drake series, this time there's no team, no back up, no extraordinary equipment and planning. It's just Dahl fighting seemingly overwhelming odds to protect his family from old enemies bent on brutal revenge. Dahl is torn between the fear he feels for his family and the need to put that fear aside in order to become the fighting force he is capable of but which requires total focus on the task at hand. Never one to consider his own safety when facing extreme danger, having to protect his family creates new and difficult choices. An excellent character study of Dahl the man.

As always a fantastic book from Mr Leadbeater. Fast paced, heart in mouth, breath holding romp around what is supposed to be a restful, family holiday. Bad guys, plural, all sorted out by our amazing protagonist with some unexpected helpers (I won't spoil it, read it and find out yourself). Can always rely on this author for a very entertaining read. Can't wait for the next one. Standalone great but do yourself a favour, go on you deserve it, and read the WHOLE series that this book spins off from, Matt Drake Series in case you haven't found it yet. You won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great first Dahl standalone
Reviewed in Australia on January 27, 2021
I’m an avid Drake series fan and during the series realised I’d missed a book somewhere and turned out there was a Dahl standalone (this book) which I’ve just read. I couldn’t put it down and just read it in one go! I love this character and whilst I did miss the rest of the group it was nice having a story with his family and more on his personal life too. It would be great to see more of this series as well moving forward

4.0 out of 5 stars Totally O.T.T. but I enjoyed the book!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 30, 2019
You really have to suspend belief if you want to enjoy this book. Dahl is a special forces soldier,
but in this book he is a one man army - James Bond, Jack Reacher and Superman all rolled into one!!
Totally unbelievable how he manages to overcome 15 or so "baddies", most of whom had guns, but hey,
    this IS fiction!

On the first day of his holiday in Barbados with his family, he is targetted by an enemy from years ago.
This enemy and his drug baron employer both have personal reasons to want Dahl to have a painful death.
Clad in only swimwear the family are chased across the island and have to fight off not only the many thugs
hired by the two enemies, but also local lowlifes and corrupt police. They get help from a surprising source,
although that source also brings them into danger.

The action was fast paced and easily read and there was no sex or extreme swearing. There were a few
errors. Once Dahl stole a jacket, but later he was only wearing a t-shirt; another time he had obtained 3
guns, but then it was only 2, etc. But that is just nit-picking. A recommended read, so long as you can
accept Dahl's unbelievable ability to stay alive!

5.0 out of 5 stars If you like SPEAR, the Mad Swede Drake, Alicia and the gang you will love this one.
Reviewed in Australia on June 22, 2016
I love all the SPEAR team books together and apart but this one takes it up another notch. I Really liked the injection of normal life with the usual super hero soldier grown in for the Mad Swede. David Leadbeater you are getting better and better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Action, suspense and excitement
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 11, 2016
Torsten Dahl’s first solo outing has all the action, suspense and excitement we expect from a David Leadbeater novel, but with a twist.
In the Matt Drake novels, Dahl is a rock, a complete professional, and yes, the Mad Swede – and he always comes up with the goods. In Stand Your Ground, he is all of this, but we also see his softer side, his vulnerability: his family.
Just how does a key member of an elite special forces team balance his professional role with that of a husband and father? Especially when the two intersect?
Read Stand Your Ground to find out…
