Starlet (Sophie Lark Standalones) Kindle Edition
Clara was Hollywood’s hottest rising star, until someone murdered her on the Paramount lot.
I went to claim her body. The producers offered me a job instead.
Clara and I may have looked like twins, but we’re nothing alike. She loved being splashed across the silver screen and the gossip pages, dating co-stars and gangsters.
I’m just a broke student with a knack for languages.
I took the job, but not because I care about finishing the film.
I want to know what happened to my sister.
I’m surrounded by jealous actresses, crazed fans, and ruthless directors. The only person I can trust is an off-duty detective who may be more distracting than helpful.
I only have two weeks before the movie wraps. And I may be working right next to a killer…
The Lark Notes:
Two of my favorite films are "La La Land" and "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood", because they show how Hollywood can be a world unto itself, with its own history and culture. We all consume movies created there, without really understanding what it means to live and work in that space. I thought it would be fascinating to throw an outsider into that hotbed of glamor and sin, with the imperative of unearthing a secret that everyone else wants to keep buried… – Sophie
"Starlet" is a Romantic Mystery set in Hollywood’s Golden Age, right at the cusp of the Second World War. It includes both fictional and real-life characters like Clark Gable and Cecil B. DeMille. This standalone novel includes steamy scenes for mature readers only.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2021Travel back in time to old Hollywood to solve a murder mystery and fall in love!
Lark has a way of immersing the reader into the world she writes, easily acclimating to the way of life for her characters. This story is set in old Hollywood, with characters that are fabulous. Seriously, they are detailed, wonderfully crafted people whose stories intertwine to become Starlet. The book is a who-done-it tale of dead ends, twists, and suspense that keep you reading until the very end.
There is a complete HEA, but I would have LOVED an extended epilogue.
Overall, I loved this story. It could have easily been a clean romance, it had enough chemistry without anything more. Another great read by Sophie Lark!
*The author provided a copy of this book and I am sharing my honest opinion. My reviews cannot be swayed by free pages, only gifts of chocolate.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2021I love seeing this author branch out with a fun historical mystery!
The setting was great, peak old Hollywood and included some famous characters like Clark Gable and Cecil B. DeMille. I thought the pacing was quick, jumping right into the murder and investigation. This is a quick read and I enjoyed the characters and murder mystery storyline.
Alice is a great main character, she's smart and determined to find her sister's killer. I loved how she relentlessly pursued leads and jumped right into filming the movie so she could do more investigating. Her flirtation with police officer Jack was cute and not over the top, though I wish we'd seen more of them. They did get a cute ending with a nice romantic scene that made me happy.
The murder mystery was intriguing and had a lot of suspects. I enjoyed seeing Alice and Jack work together to cross people off the list and we did get resolution by finding the killer. Everything wrapped up nicely and this was a nice easy read!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2021I have recently found Sophie Lark and love her books! I'm currently catching up on reading her first series, but I couldn't wait to read this one. It was so different than what we normally expect from Mrs. Lark!
It's set in the 1940's in Hollywood. I know very little about either the era or setting, other than I love the style of the time. I always have. Jack and Alice had a slow burn romance that honestly was almost not present until the very end. This book was more focused on the mystery of who killed Alice's sister, Clara. It's a mystery that kept me guessing right along with Alice. I love all the characters, and there were many. Such a good read! If you're someone like me who loves to mix up what kind of genre/ trope you read, this is right up your alley!
*I read this book through the Kindle Unlimited program.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 26, 2022When up-and-coming actress Clara Bloom is found dead on the Paramount Studios lot, her sister Alice is asked to travel to Hollywood to identify the body. While there, the producers offer her a job to finish filming the scenes Clara was never able to. Reluctantly, Alice accepts the opportunity in hopes of questioning those at the studio to find out what happened to her sister. In between jealous co-stars, gossip queens and gangsters, the only one Alice could seem to trust is the handsome detective assigned to her sisters case. I absolutely love murder mysteries, especially if they’re set in old Hollywood and this one hit all the right spots! The characters are likeable and realistic without being boring. The reveals are believable yet still create a stunning experience. I do wish the romance and mystery was woven better throughout the story but the mystery element was so good and investing that I forgot it was supposed to be romantic too.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2022More like 3.5 stars, this was a good book! A few cons for me, the story seemed a bit rushed and I didn’t really get a great feel of who Alice was; sometimes I even forgot her name. But I loved the whole Hollywood atmosphere and the mystery of “who dun it” throughout. I thought the mystery was done very well. Sophie Lark is one of my favorite authors and if she ever did more books set in old Hollywood, or even more mystery/thriller types, I’m so there!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2023liked it so much! she consistently writes well written novels that showcase her brilliant storytelling ability, and a vocabulary that won’t quit. this story wasn’t as fast paced as some of her other works. despite or because of the measured pace it was a delightful read featuring a well thought out plot and sympathetic characters. bravo to mrs. lark!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2024So excited to read!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2021I enjoyed the unexpected twists and turns of this mystery as Alice and Jack work to find out who killed Alice’s sister. I visualized the old 1940s Hollywood glamour in the scenery and costumes so easily with the book’s descriptions. It takes an exceptionally talented author to place real figures liked Clark Gable in fictional books with a great plot. This is definitely one of those books with that type of talented author. I also found what child actors had to endure interesting and sad to read about as those details were included in this book’s plot. I wasn’t able to guess who the killer was before the killer was revealed in this mystery.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unexpectedly Beautiful ❤️
I absolutely love Sophie and had read all her books except this one.
Initially I missed it’s release and then wasn’t sure I wanted to read a mystery, even though I’ve enjoyed them in the past I’m definitely a more of a romance/dark romance kind of girl.
However I was enraptured from the moment I started, Sophie’s playlist was the cherry on top to a well written story that brought to life an era I’ve always loved since I was a little girl.
It was perfect, full of mystery, history, love and a whole lot of unexpected twists.
I can’t even explain how much I loved it!
100 STARS! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

5.0 out of 5 stars A great standalone book!
This was such a good read, and something completely different than I have read by Sophie Lark so far whilst going through her back catalogue! I loved the time setting and the story ravelled within old-time Hollywood, it truly felt like from this age!
The storyline had me guessing throughout, a good 'whodunnit' with flair and some romance intertwined within it. Thank you Sophie for yet another smash hit! 🖤

4.0 out of 5 stars Old Hollywood mystery
Alice ends up in Hollywood after her sister Clara, a famous actress, is murdered. She is determined to find out what, and who, happened to her. To help with the investigation Alice takes Clara’s spot in her current film. There are many suspects including gangsters, her roommate, film crew, set designers and other famous actors.
This is primarily a mystery set in Hollywood of the 40s but there is a romance subplot between our detective and one of the actual detectives. It’s really good.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Classic Hollywood Mystery
Sophie Lark is best known as one of the queens of mafia romances. I recommend her Colours of Crime series and Brutal Birthright series if you like your romances with a little bit of danger.
This is a step away from the genre, to something new, or should I say old? It's a throwback to the Golden Age of Hollywood, with fictional characters and nods to true legends.
I really enjoyed this book and the little historical details that made the whole story come alive. The mix of real life legends and fictional characters worked really well, I could picture their interactions with each other as if it was a piece of history.
The murder mystery had a good few twists and turns, and kept me hooked all the way through for the big reveal.
This wasn't as steamy as some of Sophie Larks previous books but given the change in genre this made sense to the story and time period. If I'm honest I don't think this book even needed the one sex scene it had. It felt a little tacked on at the end.
I would recommend this book and I hope we might see more from these characters in the future. It would work well as a recurring murder mystery series in a similar style to Miss Fisher, with its historical settings and sexual tension.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! Another great book by Sophie Lark
What a wonderfully written story. Once again Sophie Lark has woven her magic writing skills to create a fantastic story that captured me straight away and once I started reading I could not put this book down!
I am not going to give away anything you have to do yourself a favour and just read it!
Sophie, your books help me escape to another world. They give me joy, happiness sometimes they make me cry, sometimes I laugh and sometimes I think wow that's hot even though its for a short time but for that I thank you!
