Star Mage (The Enslaved Chronicles Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 759 ratings

Some magic should be forbidden.

Reunited safely in Panar, Miara, Aven, and their friends have conquered more obstacles than they thought possible. The Akarian Assembly has accepted Aven and his magic -- and Miara as his queen. But the problems for Akaria and its freemages are only beginning. One ally has vanished. Another teeters on the edge of death. And a third will face a choice between duty and love.

Meanwhile, the Dark Master has marshalled the combined power of Mage Hall and Kavanar’s army. He's closer than ever before to his goals: destroy the star mage and his magic, recapture those who've escaped, and seize all of Akaria for himself.

With the true, terrible potential of magic unleashed, no one can predict what destruction will be wrought. The struggle for the freedom of mage slaves culminates in all-out war in this third and final volume of the Enslaved Chronicles.

Review

"A world worth exploring..." -- Ear to the Ground Books

"These books lifted me up, helped me smile and fanned the small flame of hope in my soul." -- Pat Stiff, Reader

"Star Mage is the epic conclusion to the Enslaved Chronicles trilogy. The war has begun. New enemies, brutal tactics, and shrinking odds of success. Our heroes struggle against the army marching from the west and the enemy plotting from within their own halls. This story also raises ethical questions and impossible choices; weighing what is right against what is necessary; duty against desire. Who can be trusted? Who should be saved? Who should be sacrificed? In all the drama and chaos, Thorne still finds room for levity and humor. Combine these elements with varied and interesting characters, and it all comes together into a deliciously layered apple dumpling of a book." -- Steve Martinez, Reader

To actually give this series a 5-star took some selfsearch. The characters are well drawn, but very similar - pairs of star-crossed lovers-to-be, struggling with their different backgrounds and prejudices, and with concerns and doubts about their blooming relationships. The plot is almost secondary. But, the general concept of creature, earth, and air mage, and the development for the reader of their respective capabilities is relatively unique, and pretty well done. The addition of the idea of magical enslavement adds a neat plot twist. Not sure the author, so busy with love stories, did nearly as much with such a rich tapestry.
The idea of an overarching 'star mage' wielding power of specific types instantly available from specific stars was a bit gimmicky, and in my opinion detracted from the plot a good deal. Hard to believe, not too well handled, and aside from its unique value to slavery, not of much importance, except to limit use of the vast array of mage capabilities possible, and not well exploited.
A saving grace was the actual development of Daez, as one changed and enhanced by becoming one of the star-crossed pairs, and the final (sort-of) consequences there.
In general, the story flows, the author writes well and clearly. Needs a little help with editing (and maybe with tightening the story lines).
Reads somewhat like very chaste romance novel(s). And seems that is really what the author wants, as he notes in his wrap up, a new series of lover's stories with space ship's and Ray guns.
Was, in the end, a bit disappointed in how the third book's plotline wrapped abruptly. Would have liked a promise of more...

I have loved reading these books! I must say I hardly ever post a review. When I read the description of the first book I was skeptical but purchased the book hoping it would at least be okay. I have loved all 3 books! I’m not great at articulating my thoughts but I was thrilled about the elegant way R. K. Thorne melded danger, romance, suspense and clear clean lines of right and wrong. Also I was so very please it was good and CLEAN. I loved the “code” Prince Aven lived by (barely). Also when the story turned to intamacy it was done in good tast, that is it was only hinted at not described in detail. I do hope Thorne will write more like this, if not more of this. Perhaps a story of Miara and Aven later in life, a new adventure. That should be both easy and a challenge. Thank you very much for sharing your talent. T. L. Burr

Man...I’m going to miss these amazing characters! It was a great, and somewhat predictable (a lot, but I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way!) series. It’s a shame to see it end, there is soooooo many great characters, couples etc...to carry this amazing world on, and on. Loved it, great story, characters, writing...and mostly editing (first near perfect, 2nd lil less, 3rd editors snoozed just a bit), but y’all will love this series!

Ok, the title "Star Mage" makes it sound like Aven is the star of the show.. but no, its definitely all about girl power. Miara was definitely the star of this book, followed by Jaena. It was nice to read about strong women taking charge. I still loved the men of this book too.. I enjoyed reading about the love blossoming between Ro and Jaena, Thel and Niat. Reading about them felt like reading mini stories that intertwined with Aven and Miara's story. Seriously glad I came back to these books.

Some parts of this book were good, but a bit of it dragged. The beginning was so slow and hard to get into. The middle was a little better, but the end started dragging again. The bits before the ending also confused me. It felt like the plot started to not make sense. It didn’t help that there were errors that made it a little confusing (such as character viewpoint shifts that weren’t clearly marked).

The 1st book in this series was the best of the 3. This contains too much internal reflection, too much planning, too much of the stuff less interesting than the active parts that made 1 and most of 2 great. The last 2 chapters were great though. Overall worth reading. Fun and imaginative

The long awaited third book was well worth it. Many questions were answered and the plot just kept rolling on. Really loved this series and will look for more of this authors books. So many characters to get to know, and worry about their outcomes. Keep up the excellent writing.

1.0 out of 5 stars romanzo conclusivo che rovina tutta la storia
Reviewed in Italy on May 1, 2018
Ho fatto proprio fatica a finirlo. Un vero peccato perchè l'autrice aveva tra le mani una stupenda storia ben articolata, ricca di dettagli e personaggi carismatici, che purtroppo sono sfumati nel terzo volume.

I found the books overall quite good written. The characters are well developed, the story arches are interesting and the ending is unexpected. Maybe because I am used to nowadays to neverending series, i simply wish for more books, altough the books are in no way short. Any book that lets you wanting more though is definetely a good book.
