The Strange Side of Midnight Kindle Edition
“Smart, scary and beautifully written - a dark fantasy filled with well-crafted characters, lots of action, skilled world building, and above all, real heart. I absolutely loved it.”
For 100 years the portal to the human world has been closed to them.
It is now open.
They are free.
They are evil.
They are Fae.
Warning: This is not a fairy tale. It is a tale about faeries.
At the edge of an ancient forest steeped in legends, stands a 400-year-old manor House occupied by the mysterious Sinister family since it was built. An accusation of witchcraft against the Sinisters in the past, saw seven of them burnt at the stake. Within a week of their deaths, a deadly blight swept through the village. Those that survived fled never to return.
As time passed, the abandoned village was reoccupied and steadily grew into a town. Unaware of the evil that dwelt in the forest overlooking them, the townsfolk went about their daily lives. With the death of the last Sinister descendant, that is about to change.
When a caretaker is sought to look after Hagsdell Manor, a down on his luck an author of supernatural thrillers, takes the position. He is searching for something to kickstart his writing mojo and hopes living in the old manor will provide that. When he discovers a macabre casket in the attic and opens it, the strange contents embroil him in a set of life-threatening events, not even his writer's imagination could have dreamed up.

An author looking for his next big story, a secluded mansion seeped in mysterious legends, and a portal to a world of danger...
Hagsdell Manor
When a writer of supernatural thrillers looking for inspiration for his next novel accepts the job of caretaker of Hagsdell Manor, he is about to find more than he ever bargained for.
Once owned by the mysterious Strange family, the manor is seeped in local legends of weird goings-on and sighting of creatures not of this world.
A Strange Casket
Crowe's troubles begin when he is rummaging through the attic crammed with the Strange's family cast offs, and discovers an unusual casket.
When he opens it he is led on a strange and dangerous path he finds it all but impossible to escape from.
Desperate to right his wrong, he enters the forest to search for the fabled witch said to dwell there, GRISELDA POISON. He finds her, and they reach an uneasy alliance. Together, along with ELLIE, a girl previously kidnapped by the faeries who was rescued by Solomon Sinister, and now a faerie herself, they enter the Faerie Realm to once again entrap them in their own world and seal the portal.

About the author Ben Hammott
Former global adventurer, currently a writer of thrillers, with a mind full of monsters. Ben Hammott is a British author living in England with his human family and more than the average number of cats. Most of his published works fall under the broad category of ‘thriller,’ getting there by way of horror, fantasy or historical mystery. Though now firmly based back in the UK, he wrote most of his books while travelling across Europe, until a certain global pandemic forced a change of direction. Until that point, he could genuinely style himself as something of an adventurer and explorer, making a few small discoveries and finding his way into locations not seen by the public in decades. When he’s not writing, Ben spends his time exploring his passion for resin moulding and 3D printing, and constructing ever more new climbing places for his cats, while insisting to anybody who will listen that he’s not a cat person.

About the author

Former global adventurer, currently a writer of thrillers, with a mind full of monsters. Ben Hammott is a British author living in England with his human family and more than the average number of cats.
Most of his published works fall under the broad category of ‘thriller,’ getting there by way of horror, fantasy or historical mystery. Two of his many novels, ‘Hell Ship: The Flying Dutchman’ and ‘Ice Rift,’ are now available on audio.
Though now firmly based back in the UK, he wrote most of his books while travelling across Europe, until a certain global pandemic forced a change of direction. Until that point, he could genuinely style himself as something of an adventurer and explorer, making a few small discoveries and finding his way into locations not seen by the public in decades (including one small misadventure in a dinghy that’s still a sore spot for the person who leant it to him).
When he’s not writing, Ben spends his time exploring his passion for resin moulding and 3D printing, and constructing ever more new climbing places for his cats, while insisting to anybody who will listen that he’s not a cat person.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2019If you read nothing else this year do give The Strange Side Of Midnight a read every being from every fairy tale is in the mix plus a few more its a very entertaining book and is worth the time .
- Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2019It started off creepy. Thought okay, little spook novel. Drifted into dark humor and then just humor. It was okay, but not what I was expecting from the title. There is an adventure, and good vs evil, fairies and ghouls.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2019This was just a wonderful read. Ben,s imaginativeness in creating strange and frightening creatures is unsurpassed. He keeps the suspense high and the story interesting with wonderful characters and terrific creatures that that keep coming. Loved this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2020Ben has written another fun story with unexpected twists. Characters were likeable and the dialogue entertaining. I stumbled on Hammott's Ice Rift books which I really liked and have been on a reading his books since and they been great.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 20, 2020If I could give 10 stars I would. This book was his funniest book so far! Thanks Ben I really like your writing style. Scary and funny.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2019This book got very tedious, so I never finished it. I deleted it from my Kindle
- Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2020It was a really good book, I enjoyed reading it. It kept me on the edge of my seat. It's full of well-crafted characters and wonderfully written. I liked the dark humor, I laughed quite a bit. I have always loved tales about faeries, ghouls, and other paranormal creatures. This book has them all. If there's to be another book I'd definitely read it.
I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2023THE STRANGE SIDE OF MIDNIGHT by Ben Hammond is a fantasy novel involving hostile, frightening faeries and many other terrifying creatures from Ben Hammond's fecund imagination. It is in the third person, following the point of view of Callisto Crowe (who goes by his last name), "a once successful supernatural thriller and horror novelist who had now fallen out of favor with his once-loyal readers, his agent, and publisher" and who thus accepts the job of caretaker to the Strange [family last name] Mansion in order to soak up atmosphere for the next novel that will get him back on track. He discovers various items in the house, including three locked trunks, only two of which are actually opened, and a map which propells him into being co-opted into fixing what he broke when he releases malevolent faeries from Faeryland back into our world. The number of different monsters the author has invented is staggering, but the book devolves into a blow-by-blow description of how each one of seven of this and six of that and swarms of the other are dispatched. When he and his companions return, another adventure is in the offing to restore one of his companions to full size and human form. I enjoyed the book, but found the unending blow-by-blow dispatch of opponents way too much. There are occasional proofreading errors.
I was given an ARC and am voluntarily writing a review.

5.0 out of 5 stars A White Knuckle ride once again
Another brilliant story by Ben Hammott , it completely changes tack after the first couple of chapters I am the first to admit that avoid magic fantasy novels like the plague but this was a novel which I shall be reading again and again and recommending to all I know . Up until a few months ago Ben was a relatively unknown author but he stands head and shoulders above a lot of his contemporaries . Also by Mr Hammott `Horror Island ` the first novel of his I ever read also excellent , also `The Ice Rift `trilogy a mix of Sci Fi and Horror fast paced leaving you breathless and hungry for more like many of the creatures . B this novel mixes mild horror with magic and humour and very satisfying outcome , Tolkien readers may well enjoy this book .
