4.0 out of 5 stars 23 ratings

Named one of the "10 Best Historical Romances with Sports" by Frolic!

The nights were their secret.
The papers back home call Ben Potter a hero of the Philippine-American War, but he knows the truth. When his estranged brother-in-law offers him work slashing sugarcane, Ben seizes the opportunity to atone—one acre at a time. At the hacienda Ben meets schoolteacher Allegra Alazas. While Allegra bristles at her family’s traditional expectations, the one man who appreciates her intelligence and independence seems to be the very worst marriage prospect on the island.

Neither Ben nor Allegra fit easily in their separate worlds, so together they must build one of their own. But when Ben’s wartime past crashes down upon them, it threatens to break their elusive peace.

Named one of the 10 Best Historical Romances with Sports by Frolic!

PRAISE FOR SUGAR MOON:
"So this book I was saving for the long weekend? Readers, I just finished it. WHY DID I READ IT SO FAST?...Pretty sure Allegra will be my favorite heroine this year."
(★★★★★ review by Kat of Bookthingo on Goodreads)

Ben and Allegra's story was "on a completely different level."
(Joy Villar's review on Twitter)

"These characters were so vibrant!...The portrayal of women--and Allegra in particular--uplifts and inspires...
Sugar Moon sparkles with wit and romance..." (Michaelene M.'s review in Historical Romance Magazine)
"This second novel in Jennifer Hallock's The Sugar Sun Trilogy is an interesting recounting of what is usually referred to as the Philippine Insurrection, and sometimes called America's 'First Vietnam.' It's an important series since it seems this war, and the reasons for it, have been overshadowed by other major conflicts that followed....Highly recommended." (Historical Novel Society)

"I cared intensely for Allegra (Allie), a young woman who knows what she wants but not how to get it, and Ben, who doesn't believe he deserves to have anything at all....Ben, a curmudgeon of an opium addict who I instantly disliked in Sugar Sun, is transformed through some sort of writerly witchcraft into a sympathetic character I couldn't help but root for."
(★★★★★ review by Alexa Rowan on Goodreads)

"Set in the Philippines in the early 1900s, this richly layered romance is filled with vivid details of a location not often found in historical romance--including a historical baseball game! The hero, Ben, is suffering from what we now know as PTSD from the war, and he struggles with his self-worth. When he meets the fiercely independent schoolteacher Allegra, their chemistry turns this into a heart-tugging and wonderful journey of redemption." (
Bestselling author Joanna Shupe, in Frolic's "10 Best Historical Romance with Sports")

PRAISE FOR UNDER THE SUGAR SUN, the first novel in the Sugar Sun series:

"If you're looking for a meaty historical romance that will transport you somewhere you've never been, Jennifer Hallock's books...are must-reads."
(Courtney Milan, New York Times bestselling author of The Duchess War)

Compared to other installments in this series, Sugar Moon has far more post-nuptials drama. What risks will the newlyweds take? Whom can they trust? What stresses can their love endure? A whole new kind of story is just beginning. There is also a substantial exploration of military conflicts with Filipino rebels. This is completely new terrain. Here Hallock smartly investigates the fine line between heroic efforts to keep peace and senseless naiveté. Very engaging. And she still delivers unspeakable naughtiness throughout as well as the happily-ever-after ending that we are all counting on. What a great book!

As with the rest of Jennifer Hallock's Sugar Sun series, this book focuses on a period in history not often featured in fiction--the Philippine-American War and its aftermath. This time she takes the (what I believed to be) unredeemable Ben Potter, Georgina's brother from Under The Sugar Sun and veteran of the massacres of Samar, and turns him into a hero who earns his redemption with the sweat of his brow. This journey would have no impetus or aid without Allegra Alazas, Javier's feisty cousin from the first book and who here matures into a remarkable heroine: sure of herself, decisive, dominant (!!!) and loveable. Together, she and Ben are a couple you root for. The last third of the book happens after what you'd normally expect would be the HEA, and while I was tearing my hair out from the tension of this bit, Hallock lays out Ben's guilt, PTSD and atonement, as well as Allie's decisiveness, so well that I understood why and how they got there.

If there's one complaint I have about this is that it could be so much longer! Ben's backstory and the couple's journey from midnight chocolate to HEA could be expanded into another book, with all its rich detail and emotional complexity. It's primed for a sweeping, historical epic--but I'll take what I can get from this amazing series!

As with the other’s in the Sugar Sun series, I could not stop reading from the first page until the last. With Sugar Moon, Author Jennifer Hallock weaves a wonderful, fast paced tale set in the early twentieth century Philippines, filled with romance and danger, interspersed with a fascinating amount of history that made me feel like I was there, walking along with the character’s, seeing and hearing the sights, sounds and scents of the various locations of this fascinating country.

In particular, I especially loved how the author features another strong, female heroine. Allegra is a bad-ass mix of a woman a fierce and soft side, the fierce the most predominant, making the chemistry between her and war damaged, hero, Benn Potter such a page turning, heart-tugging story. Yes, okay, I am a sucker for happily ever after. However, like here, it makes a much better read when there is strong story telling combined with well developed, three dimensional characters that the reader cannot help but care about. I highly recommend this to all fans of historical romance or potential fans of historical romance. If you haven’t read the other two in the Sugar Sun series, check them out!

I tore through the other three installments in the Sugar Sun world and came to Sugar Moon with high expectations. The plot gets off to a slow start, filling in a few years' worth of background info, but I'm glad I stuck with it. The chemistry between the two love-birds is clear, and their characters are very well-written. Allegra is a badass. Hallock's narration can be subtly ironic, which I love. And just when I thought Ben and Allegra were going to settle down for their happily-ever-after, things went down. (They do get their HEA, because it's romance. But they have to work for it.)

Overall, the characters are great, the history is well-researched to create a believable setting, and the romance is sweet.

Beautifully written and masterfully presents the challenge of being an expatriate in another culture. Ms. Hallock captures the passion of young love with tenderness and tasteful detail. I wanted the book to continue and after reading the second installment I urge readers to find "Sugar Moon" and read them together.
