“Chris Pourteau has taken the world of Pennsylvania and given it the life, texture, and action of the best war epics, while filling that world with humanity, humor, and vivid characters you'll never forget. Chris Pourteau is the bestselling author of the sci-fi thriller novels of the SynCorp Saga (co-authored with David Bruns), the post-apocalyptic Serenity Strain novels, and the military sci-fi collection Tales of B-Company. His first novel, Shadows Burned In, earned the 2015 eLit Book Awards Gold Medal for Literary Fiction. The Lazarus Protocol, the first novel in the SynCorp Saga, placed in the Top Ten in Read Freely's 2018 50 Best Indie Book of the Year contest; it was the highest-rated Sci-Fi novel in the contest.

He’s also edited and curated bestselling short story collections including the two animal-centric collections Tails of the Apocalypse and Tails of Dystopia (with Samuel Peralta), as well as Bridge Across the Stars, a collection of Sci-Fi stories from indie and traditionally published authors published by Sci-Fi Bridge, which Chris co-founded. His dayjob is editor-in-chief for the Texas A&M Transportation Institute, which researches cutting-edge technologies across the transportation spectrum.

Some battles are won with bullets while others are won with food, or the lack of it. In this second installment of author Chris Pourteau’s tales of Company B, he addresses an aspect of war that is often forgotten. Soldiers can’t fight if they’re hungry, especially soldiers as big as my favorite character in the series Stug, who are now forced to eat half-rations.

Here’s a quote that aptly describes Stug, “Despite his behemoth stature and generally affable nature, the man had the annoying whine of a five-year-old boy who’s been told he can’t have a second cookie.”

Someone has been stealing their supplies and TRACE needs to figure out whom. Led my Mary Brenneman, nicknamed the QB (you’ll have to read this story to find out what it stands for) the soldiers go on a mission to solve the mystery of the missing food. Along the way they run into the Wild Ones, a new character named Logan, and of course Transport. This is a great addition to Michael Bunker’s World of “Pennsylvania”.

Wars are won by bullets and beans, and in the ongoing war against Transport, the TRACE fighters have a supply line problem. QB and her team are sent out to investigate.

I enjoyed Susquehanna even more than Gettysburg. The characters of Stug, Bracer, Hawkeye and Hatch all felt like old friends and Pourteau introduces us to the Wild Ones, salvagers living in the space between TRACE and Transport. The Wild Ones want to make a deal: food for weapons. In typical QB fashion, she takes it upon herself to lead the raid on a Transport site to steal the weapons the Wild Ones need.

But best-laid plans and all that means that things don’t quite come together as she’d hoped.

In the continuing adventures of the Bestimmung Company, author Chris Pourteau has scored a victory for his series and for the original work, PENNSYLVANIA.

Having read Chris Pourteau’s previous story, Gettysburg: A Tale of the Second War for Pennsylvanian Independence, I was excited to see another adventure with these characters come out in Susquehanna: A Second Tale of Bestimmung Company. Both of these stories take place in the universe Michael Bunker created in Pennsylvania, which is soon to see an anthology of shorts come out, with some great writers involved in this collection.

This second tale from Pourteau follows the TRACE soldiers as they investigate the disappearance of food shipments that could mean the difference between life and death. This one has some great action and will definitely leave you wanting more!

If you haven’t been reading these Pennsylvania stories, you should definitely give them a try. I look forward to more stories and novels from Pourteau in the future.

Chris Pourteau's second tale in the world of Michael Bunker's Pennsylvania is just as strong and compelling as Gettysburg (which I loved). Susquehanna provides further insight into the characters that Pourteau has so skillfully created and I found myself liking them more and more. The story line is strong, compelling, and action packed. Pourteau also masterfully uses one of Bunker's characters, managing to perfectly capture the unique mannerisms and speech patterns introduced by Michael Bunker. This demonstrates the skill of this relatively newly-published author.

Again, I find myself waiting (impatiently) for whatever Chris Pourteau comes up with next!

The second of Chris Pourteau's Bestimmung Company stories takes everything that was good about the first and ratchets it up a notch. More action, more tension, more drama and an ending that left me eager to read more. I don't read a lot of military science fiction but Pourteau has me hooked on this series.

Ok, if you've gotten thi far, you should already be aware that there are several stories that you need to read first. Then, you'll enjoy this one also.

Yet again Chris Pourteau writes a great story in the world of Pennsylvania. Now if you will excuse me I need to get to book 3.
