Sweet Sacrifice: A Dark Brother's Best Friend Romance (King's Trace Antiheroes Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 1,424 ratings

From international bestselling author Sav R. Miller comes a gritty and steamy romance between a morally gray cybersecurity engineer and his best friend's younger sister.

Fiona Ivers has been in love with her brother’s best friend since she was a kid. He’s older and oblivious to her existence—which only makes her want him more. She’s always believed he was disinterested, until a charity gala pushes them together. There, she realizes maybe he pays more attention than he’s ever let on.

Broody, tattooed loner Boyd Kelly has a low tolerance for distractions, and has no issues letting those around him know. His best friend’s younger sister doesn’t seem to care, though.

Each time the high-strung redhead bats her doe eyes in his direction, Boyd gives in a little, secretly desperate for the affection she so clearly wishes to give him.

But opening up to love might be more dangerous than either of them knows.

*Sweet Sacrifice is the third interconnected standalone in the King's Trace Antiheroes series, a dark romance trilogy revolving around a corrupt small town in Maine. Reader discretion is advised. For a detailed list of content warnings, please see the author's website.*

His best friend’s younger sister doesn’t seem to care, though.

"I liked kissing you,” she whispers, sliding her hand inward, tracing the dip of my bottom lip with her thumbnail. "I wouldn’t mind doing it again... minus all the crap you spewed after.”

Review

  • ★★★★★ "My favorite type of love stories are the ones where the characters also learn to love themselves. This gave me that in spades. The only spoiler I'll give is to prepare yourself for a major book hangover because Boyd and Fiona will work their way into your heart and they won't want to leave." - Author Emily McIntire
  • ★★★★★ "If you like your romances dark and you haven't started this series then binge this now. I swear you won't regret it." - Kristy, @coversandink
  • ★★★★★ "The chemistry between them was a spark waiting to ignite and when it does it is explosive." - Amy, @bookaddict_reviews
  • ★★★★★ "I laughed, I cried, and I fell in love with Boyd and Fiona. This was an incredibly well written, perfectly executed end to an already amazing series." - Sarah, Goodreads reviewer

This one was super angsty and like 92% trauma. 🫠🤣 I am always really impressed by how Sav is so good at getting into the minds of characters who face different types of trauma and mental illness and I really appreciated Fiona’s story and her struggles with OCD and anxiety. 🫶🏼 I also enjoyed seeing a bit more of Riley’s story in this book, as heartbreaking as it was. 💔 I loved the little V&V Easter eggs.

I read the King's Trace series after Monsters and Muses, thinking that nothing could top Monsters and Muses. I was wrong! This might be my favorite of the King's Trace/M&M series.

This one was an emotional roller coaster in the best possible way, and I've gone back and read it more than once. I'm not sure if this is a spoiler, but Boyd and Fiona come up in Monsters and Muses, as does Boyd's sister (I don't want to reveal or spoil too much) and I loved them so much as cameos in M&M, so was delighted to find they had their own book, and I love them even more. Before this book, Kal was my favorite Sav MMC, but Boyd may have dethroned him.

Something that I love with ALL of Sav's books is that when a character pops up in another character's chapter (like a sister, or best friend) it gives you an entirely different perspective on that character. For example, Boyd's sister, best friend, and Fiona all see him in very different ways, as they should, but Sav's writing captures that in such an impressive way. Similarly, if you read M&M and loved Kal, he shows up in all of the King's Traces books, and once again, he feels very different from the way he's perceived on Aplana island (not in a bad or off character way, because it makes sense - especially since these books are set earlier in time than M&M)

I also loved how this book dealt with mental health -how that impacted the main characters and their relationship, and what they had to deal with to get to a good relationship. It was done oh so very well.

I can’t say that I’m in love with this book because it bothered me at times but I still couldn’t put it down and enjoyed a lot too.
There was quite a bit of time jumps that happened right after an important or hot scene and it would leave me slightly confused. Maybe I like filth too much but they took forever to finally have sex and I love the type of erotica she writes but I wish there was more of it!
I loved the brutality of characters, a lot of books with violent criminals they don’t actually write about the violence and it was written well in this book. The mental health issues of Boyd and Fiona were very interesting as well, I typically haven’t come across that in detail. Very well written, and I really did enjoy it!

I actually didn't think I'd like this. When I saw that it had mafia themes, I didn't want to read it. But I had read an excerpt from the author on instagram so I figured I'd give it a shot and I'm so happy I did! It's the first book in the trilogy that I've read. It has a trigger warning for good reason. I had a tough time reading it but honestly, the points of trauma and loss, coping and healing were the absolute best parts. I'm a huge romance junkie and I was attracted to it because I was interested in the romance from the piece I had previously read. Well, it definitely has good steamy scenes and that, in any other book, would likely be the biggest strength but the true gem of this book really is the coping/healing from the trauma and loss the characters face. I strangely identified with multiple aspects of these characters and what they were going through and it actually helped me find tidbits that I thought helped explain a few things to myself. The plight of Fiona in particular was heart-rending for me and it's really nice to see someone like that reach a happy ending. Gives me a bit of hope, you know? It was intelligently written and had a great, logical portrayal of the characters and the mental illnesses they struggle with. I doubt I've seen another character written as well as Fiona was. All in all, use caution because it has a truly huge range of triggers that could be horrible for people who are struggling but personally, I loved this book. I'm not sure I can recommend it simply because of those triggers/subject matters (you never want to assume what people are going through and accidently harm them by exposing them to their trigger) but the story is truly compelling and I honestly am happy I picked it up. I can tell that I will reread it often.

Wow wow wow. Warning, spoilers ahead:

I found the author through social media. She's a newer author, and I'm not a fan of how she tells a story, i found how she ends scenes very confusing. However, I really like how she writes certain big moments, and people. The BD.SM relationship had some of the best written moments I've seen.

HERE'S THE PROBLEM! Boyd is TERRIBLE! He's a horrible communicator, he completely ignores consent when it comes to Fiona and birth control, yet doesn't let any of her "wrongs" go. He somehow thinks they are bad for each other? When they aren’t, but he doesn’t know that because they don't communicate. He hides his secrets, and when she RIGHTLY calls him on it, he shuts her out. She tried to fix things! But instead he took off for months! But the worst thing is he leaves Fiona in the hands of a r@pist and human trafficker, where her life was actually in danger! You are supposed to care more about the people you LOVE!

And he only mildly feels bad about it, but she has to make up for things for life! I actually vomited in my mouth skimming that make up scene.

LOVED THIS BOOK! This is definitely my new favorite couple from King's Trace & Monsters & Muses series by Sav. Fiona is so easily connect able, as most women have the same issues. Boyd is a fire i never knew I might like and enjoy. These two burn hot in Sweet Sacrifice and im here for it!
As for the narration and audiobook, the voices didn't grate on my nerves, I listened to the whole audiobbok from beginning to end. However, neither Narrator was particularly good at using "a second voice" to introduce a different character into the scene. Enough to know they were trying, but not good enough.
Personally, I don't think either voice fit the characters essence, but they still did good! I would listen to more of their narrations overall. I hope they both continue on in this field. 😁

I took my time reading this, absorbing every little detail. Fiona really called to my soul, her relatability making me love her and hate her all at once. Like looking in a mirror at my own demons.

This whole book is phenomenal. I knew I was going to love Boyd and Fiona but OMG! Did I love them! The angst and emotions are high in this one. This is some amazing character growth and romance development. Amazing mental health rep re: OCD I personally don’t have this diagnosis but could empathize and feel along with this characters and apply similarities from my own experience. It was really enjoyable and love the connections between this series and M&M. Love Riley’s story. Highly recommend this dark romance series.
