- Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2022Platform: PlayStation 4Edition: Starter PackVerified PurchaseDisney Infinity can be great. Be sure to research that you are ordering the correct start up set for your gaming console. XBOX 1 has a specific plug in pad. Most others work across consoles, including the PS5. When you get confused look up old YouTube explanation videos and try to watch on you tablet while playing on you TV. My grandson and I did this for the first few months to help find crossover coins and special boxes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing for kids (and adults who are kids at heart)
Platform: PlayStation 4Edition: Starter PackVerified PurchaseThis is more of a first impressions of the game than a full review.
This game has hints of the Lego games, Minecraft (though simplified) and, thematically, Kingdom Hearts. Players select who they play as by placing the figure of that character on the plastic tray. They can be joined by a friend who must also place a figure on the tray. They can then explore various themed worlds, each with a wide variety of minigames and activities, that all connect in a central hub. You have the world of A Nightmare Before Christmas nestled up to Disney World's Main Street right alongside Endor from Star Wars, to name but three examples. As they complete more activities, their character will level up and gain skill points which can be spent to purchase new abilities (special attacks, for example) or upgrade existing ones. It's quite simple stuff but does give you a good sense of progression with each character.
Many different genres are covered. So far I've played a side-scrolling beat 'em up similar to Streets of Rage or Final Fight (two games from well before the time of the target audience of this game), an arcadey shooting game and a narrative-focused Star Wars adventure that was downloadable for free. There are many more genres such as racing and platforming. Players can create their own games from scratch, choosing any of the Disney themes such as Star Wars, The Avengers, or Mickey Mouse himself. You could make a racing game based on the Cars animated movie or a fighting game with Iron Man. You can also download other players' creations as well as stuff made by the developers. These can be edited further by the player. There really is limitless fun to be had here.
All that alone would easily justify the price of entry but there's a whole other mode on top of that. By placing another figurine, this time a transparent plastic one based on one of the overarching themes such as Guardians of the Galaxy or Star Wars (as can be seen in the product photograph at the top of this page), an entire new game is unlocked. Rather than being like the minigames offered by the first mode I talked about, these are much more like full games, featuring cutscenes, a strong storyline and many things you'd never see or be able to do in the first mode. This mode is also two-player, though players are restricted to using characters from this setting, so you'd play as Luke Skywalker in one of the Star Wars games whereas in the other mode you could run around Tatooine as Jack Sparrow. Where the first mode is a sandbox, Minecraft-like experience, this mode is much more focused and hand-crafted.
The only real drawbacks so far is that the minigames in the first mode I spoke about are very basic and certainly seem to value quantity over quality. The game also is a little rough around the edges from a technical level with a lower framerate than the PS4 should be capable of with these graphics and obvious pop-in. As for the first point, it's not to say they're bad, just that it's the sheer number and variety of things to do that is the focus here, not any single game in its own right. It's kind of like a buffet at a party, lots of little nibbles rather than a proper meal. That's easily made up by the fact that you do get a "proper meal" in the form of the second mode. And of course, bear in mind that while in this particular set you just get the one based on the Star Wars prequels and Clone Wars, there are many, many more to buy for all kinds of settings.
For the second complaint, the graphics are basic and cartoony, as you'd expect, yet the PS4 seems to only run it at 30 frames per second at best (as opposed to 60fps for, say, the Uncharted Collection, a game with vastly superior graphics). There are also very obvious cases of things just popping up out of nowhere, or disappearing, like an entire waterfall in one area that vanished and reappears as you move the camera. It's a clear case that this is a bit of a lazy port from the PS3/Xbox 360 version of the game. It's not a huge problem at all, certainly not enough to drop the score from 5 to 4 stars.
Overall, it's a fantastic package, many games in one, really. It's really hard to imagine any kid not absolutely loving it.
