The Blue Moon Caper: A Damien Dickens Mystery (Damien Dickens Mysteries Book 5) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 26 ratings

Another coast-to-coast challenge for the Dickens Detective Agency.

When Bruno Caravaggio confesses to a murder he didn’t commit, Damien returns to Atlantic City to find the killer and clear his friend’s name. His task is complicated by Bruno’s desire to protect his mother, and her equally strong instinct to defend her son.

While Damien is away, Millie agrees to look into the claim of an eccentric Carmel-by-the-Sea resident that her children are trying to poison her. Her investigation leads her to Rancho Luna Azul, which sells its meat at several farmers markets in the area.

As she explores the connection between Rancho Luna Azul and the poisoning claim of her client, Millie becomes enmeshed in the FBI’s probe of a drug distribution ring operating out of the same premises. Risking capture - and possible death - at the hands of the drug ring, Millie bluffs her way inside and collects the evidence the FBI needs to complete its case.

The Dickens Detective Agency

The early years

The Dickens Detective Agency was established in the early 1970s by Damien Dickens, an ex-cop with the Atlantic City Police Department. Located in a small office suite above a restaurant, the agency also employed Millie Hewitt, who had the unenviable job of keeping Damien organized, while keeping the bill collectors at bay.

Damien and Millie marry, and she becomes a full-fledged licensed PI and an equal partner in all of the agency's cases.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This fifth book in a riveting series is another splendid 'whodunit' with a fascinating storyline and engaging characters. Like the incomparable Nick and Nora Charles from the 1930s Thin Man Series, Damien and Millie Dickens are a dynamic couple whose shrewdness and sheer guts solve their cases. The captivating plot, in which the story unfolds in a serpentine fashion, transports you between two states and two cases, culminating in an astounding and heart-rending conclusion. If sleuth mysteries tickle your fancy, then you will not want to miss this one!" - Susan Sewell, reviewing on behalf of Readers' Favorite
"Great addition to the Dickens series. Damien and Millie are trying to recover both physical and financial strength, but the investigative duo is hit with challenges throughout this well-planned and well-written story. You won't want to skip this one; it just might be the best yet." - Victoria Schwimley"Smooth reading, old-school sleuthing at it finest." - Erin M. McIntyre"This is a mystery that tickles your sleuth-bone while also tugging your heartstring." - Iris Chacon

A Superb Who-Done-It For Crime Mystery and Detective Novel Fans!

A Superb Who-Done-It For Crime Mystery and Detective Novel Fans!
Overview: When Bruno confesses to a murder he didn't commit, Detective Damien Dickens returns to Atlantic City to find the real killer and clear his young friend's name. In the meantime, Damien’s wife and partner, Millie, remains at home, exploring a connection between Rancho Luna Azul and the poisoning claim of her new client—an eccentric Carmel-by-the-Sea resident who insists that she’s being poisoned. As Damien’s task is complicated by Bruno's desire to protect his mother and her equally strong instinct to defend her son, Millie suddenly finds herself embroiled in her son’s involvement in an FBI probe of a drug distribution ring. Readers love a writer who knows how to instantly captivate and immerse them in a compelling and engaging mystery/crime series that keeps them coming back for more—And, Author Phyllis Entis’ Damien Dickens Mystery Series certainly delivers just that. Through her main characters—Detective Damien Dickens and his fellow detective and wife, Millie—Entis creates a vivid portrait of their daily life, relationships, and family burdens while granting an overall historical perspective of the crime, criminals, drug trafficking, and expansion of criminal activities during the 1970s, centered around two major U.S. casino resorts—Atlantic City and Las Vegas. In “The Blue Moon Caper”, Author Entis relocates Damien and Millie to sunny California, where Millie is soon enmeshed in family struggles with her brother—who has a tendency to attract trouble wherever he goes—his wife, and their new baby. Adding to Millie’s burden, and the development of an exciting new plotline specifically geared toward testing Millie’s burgeoning detective skills—let alone her fortitude and patience—is her new client; a flaky heiress whose senior years have brought her a strong sense of entitlement and paranoia over a supposed plot to kill her. Poor Millie’s already running ragged from family issues and detective work when she’s devastated by the fact that someone just tried to poison the Dickens’ beloved labradoodle, Hershey. While Millie struggles to deal with multiple life-threatening issues at home, Dick is summoned back to Atlantic City to help solve a murder in which his dear friend, Bruno, is the prime suspect. Here, Dick is confronted with characters from his past as he’s swept up in a grand and revealing criminal investigation involving a romance gone sour, a blackmailing scheme, and dark family secrets. “The Blue Moon Caper” is a captivating and heart-wrenching Who-Done-It for readers who love Crime Mystery and Detective novels. Although this particular novel is enjoyed best as part of the overall Damien Dickens Mystery Series, it can also be enjoyed as a stand-alone read. Taking this novel in the context of her series, Author Phyllis Entis weaves a wonderful set of plotlines together to create an unforgettable, suspenseful, and interwoven timeline. I highly recommend this read for anyone who enjoys Crime Fiction, Crime Noir novels, and characters with whom the heart will connect—Not to mention smart and lovable Labradoodles.

If you enjoy a fresh approach, meticulous plotting, and well-developed characters, you’ll love this fifth book in the Damien Dickens mystery series. The author has skillfully intertwined two separate mystery plots that run simultaneously as Damien pursues a killer in Atlantic City, and Millie works to unmask a possible poisoner in Carmel, California.

Favorite characters from the previous books return, and new ones are introduced, with a special emphasis on family. I don’t want to give anything away, but this book contains one of the most poignant and achingly realistic scenes of loss I have ever read.

With its noir-ish, somewhat retro style and complex characters, this one will stay with you a long time.

I am enjoying each new addition to the evolution to the lives of the Dicken's. The older feel and Private Investigation style is a nice break from other unrealistic series.

The Blue Moon Caper by Phyllis Entis was my first introduction to the Damien Dickens Mysteries, but it won’t be my last read. The story takes one private eye, Damien Dickens, to Atlantic City to help a friend who’s been charged with murder, his wife Millie, takes on a case in Carmel, California.
The characters are complex, and while not of the noir style, it is written in the first person, and it works. Although you might want to have snacks on hand, the meals consumed by the characters had me visiting the pantry more than once. 😊
I especially loved that she used a real news story in her plot. You won’t be disappointed when the cases are solved, but you might need a hanky, as the story tugs at the heartstrings. I foresee more cross-country mystery solving for the Dickens’s, and more great writing from Ms. Entis. I’m a fan.

Phyllis Entis has done it again, this time with a bi-coastal mystery that had me turning pages as fast as I could. I think this is my favorite of the Damien Dickens books, but it's a hard choice. In this installment, Damien is called back to NJ to help an old friend while Millie stays behind in CA to help a new client and to make arrangements for her new house guests. This book moves quickly, has several well-placed twists, and a satisfying ending. I felt like I learned more about Millie in this book, too. Not about her past, but about her personality. This is a winner, and I highly recommend it to anyone who likes a good mystery. I think it can probably be read as a standalone, but to get the most out of it, I would recommend reading the other books in the Damien Dickens series first.

Damien and Millie are at it again, operating from Atlantic City and Carmel, while trying to keep their relationship on track. In THE BLUE MOON CAPER, Phyllis Entis gives us a complex tale with lots of twists and turns. I love the 80s time period.

This is absolutely my favorite of the Damien Dickens mysteries to date. Dick and Millie are forced to work separately two thousand miles apart. The bond of love between them has grown with every new book in the series, and the lives of their loved ones are threatened during The Blue Moon Caper as the stakes rise with every chapter. This is a mystery that tickles your sleuth-bone while also tugging your heartstrings, all of which makes for an entertaining and satisfying reading experience.

What a great continuing story about a crusty, kind, hard and determined private investigator and his wonderful, strong wife. The story starts in Carmel, California and this small town is delightfully described in detail. This story is an adventure that takes twists and turns and keeps the reader glued to the pages. These books do not always turn out with a perfect life but you never know who will be harmed or worst. Can’t wait for the next book. This needs to be a movie.

I enjoyed this book, which kept me engaged and interested from start to finish. The beginning of the story is smoothly aligned with end of the previous book, and the characters' relationships proceed in a natural fashion that isn't forced. The trope of food and eating is one that appears often, especially when the story is told from Damien's perspective, and I find this quirk interesting and gently amusing. At the end of the day, the characters in these books are ordinary people involved in extraordinary or unusual events. Tom Lennon's narration conveys this well, and his work has been consistently good through most of the series - at the very least, from Book 2 onwards.
I enjoyed this, all in all, and look forward to listening to any future leads that the Damien and Millie Dickens team might follow!

I have read previous Damien and Millie capers and this one is by far the best. The husband and wife duo find themselves once again caught up in a crime solving adventure that twists and turns and keeps you turning the pages. The characters are believable and the story is solid. I love the fact that they books are time sequential and set in the 1980's. If you are a fan of cozy mysteries then dip into the Damien Dickens series you won't be disappointed!
