- Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2024This was a very unusual, but it truly heartwarming story, especially because of the way the author structures it, which provides revelations in ways that you don't normally expect. I truly truly loved this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2024Teacup Promises is an exceptional, character-driven contemporary novel featuring multiple relationship dynamics—principally a marriage between Jack and Harriet Jarden, and an affair between Jack and a younger man, Andrew. From the first few pages, readers become immersed in the story as they attend a party held to celebrate Jack’s and Harriet’s thirtieth wedding anniversary. Other attendees include friends and family members such as their daughter, Ophelia, and Stephen, their accountant and longtime family friend. Jack’s lover, Andrew, arrives as the story opens.
On the surface, one would assume this story is about Jack and Harriet and what happens at, and after, the party. But it’s so much more than that. Readers are introduced to those in attendance and are given an opportunity to get to know a bit about each of the principal characters through expertly sketched dialogue. As the party goes on, Andrew and Stephen share a drink and a moment of conversation, pondering the couple and speculating on their differences. Andrew, younger than Jack by over twenty years, seems to have accepted that he will never have more from Jack than his part-time attention, and Stephen, who happens to be Harriet’s lover, is perfectly happy with the status quo.
But that’s on the surface, and the author very skillfully reveals what lies below, one step backward at a time—literally. Through use of flashbacks, each succeeding chapter takes readers further back in time than the previous one, until the point when Jack and Harriet first meet. Clever, unique, and emotionally compelling with rich character development, each step back fills in answers to questions readers may have pondered in the previous chapter as well as those they may have never thought to ask.
As I avidly looked forward to each new chapter, I suddenly realized I was sold on this method of storytelling. I became immersed in learning more about everyone’s past lives. How did the past influence the present? How did Stephen become involved in their lives? When did Jack and Andrew first meet? How did all of the current relationships develop? There were also surprising insights into past circumstances and how even one little action could affect the future in a major way. And there was more. Much more.
The author cunningly wrapped the strands of little plot strings through my thoughts and around my heart until I could not put the book down without needing to know what would be revealed next. I knew what would happen eventually—because, after all, I had started in the present at the couples’ thirtieth anniversary celebration! But I craved those little kernels of past truths along the way.
Glenn Quigley is a gifted author with a wonderful sense of humor, a clear attention to detail, and a brilliant storyteller. I had planned to include a few quotes from some of my favorite passages; however, I’m out of space, and I don’t want to accidentally reveal a spoiler. Suffice it to say I highly recommend this book, and I’m excited to have been offered an opportunity to read and review the ARC of his first contemporary novel. I most certainly hope it will not be the last! Do not hesitate to put this on your Must Read shelf.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2024"My mother used to say every relationship is a collection of eggcup lies and teacup promises. Little things, ordinary things, delicate things, you know? They’re the dainty lies we tell to spare our loved ones’ feelings and the tiny promises we make to one another every day."
What a story! Andrew and Jack; Stephen and Harriet: this is their story. And many layers later, this is the way of their world(s) that prove that you don't always know or remember the truth the actual way it unfolds. Add to all of it Covid-19, shake well, and what comes out is a cross between what might have been and what is and was.
I started this book but I all honesty wasn't sure I'd actually finish it. I learned a lot, sometimes more than I wanted to know ( thank you Google) and towards it's denouement as things began to connect, I was gobsmacked how well Glenn Quigley brought the whole story together. And I really enjoyed it and highly recommend it. 5/5

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful Way to Spend a Couple of Hours
Another marvellous book by Glenn Quigley, contemporary setting this time but still filled with his trademark unexpected story lines, well written and minutely observed. Thoroughly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb experience
A wonderful exploration of relationships, connections and families over numerous decades - and a real page turner too.. Full of emotions, dry wit, historical references and humour. Plenty of 'no way' moments too.
Would very much recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars An intriguing read !
This is such a clever read.
On the face of it, it's a simple little story of four unconnected people but in Glenn Quigley 's hands it becomes a fascinating read.
Not to give to much away he opens the book by giving us a glimpse of glorious patch work quilt. Then slowly un picks the threads and takes the quilt apart. He doesn't just show us the individual patches that make up the quilt but starts to unstitch each line of sewing that make up each single section of the whole.
Its a simple story sewn together with meticulous needlework and I couldn't help but marvel at how he has each individual thread was used to tell us create the overall picture.
It really is a tremendous and intriguing read !
I do hope you enjoy it .

5.0 out of 5 stars A modern romance
I’ve enjoyed Quigleys pirate stories so was interested to see how his tone would work in a more modern setting, and it really works, told in reverse, with a very modern twist on relationships, I was definitely drawn in by the characters, and in particular learning in reverse how we got to that ending…
