So it was a great disappointment that one of the key secondary plot points remained unresolved. I want to know if Mina ever met her blood father. Did she get to fill that corner of her life?

    Despite the familiar theme of the perceived “mesalliance”, this book succeeded in being fresh and new. This was my second reading as I prepare to read the long awaited fifth book of the series. Even when I couldn’t remember the title of this book, I would often think about the story. That speaks to the author’s talent not only in character development, but in the lyrical and philosophical quality of her prose and dialogue. She also manages to throw in several very funny scenes. The medieval warlord bedroom scene is that in this book.

    The hero and heroine are captivating, totally outside the mold of the normal peerage. But what really ramps up the story is how vivid the secondary characters are, even the ones that aren’t particularly likable.

    The duke is so endearing. Too often, HR readers only get to experience the emotionally unavailable and often cruel or dismissive patriarch. Not so here. I don’t know what he sees in the somewhat snobbish Dowager Dalrymple, but the heart wants what it wants. Mina and Lucy, the daughters of the hero and heroine, are like little diamonds offsetting a larger stone. Kai is intriguing and inspires respect. Hugh, the entitled, eventual heir to the dukedom is somehow both infuriating and compelling. I sense hidden depths after he matures and a book of his own? With Mina? Even Miss Fox was annoyingly titillating.

    The only plot element I struggled with is the divorce. While it is part of the freshness that is intriguing, my inquisitive mind wanted to know more about Percy and Olivia. Early in the book, Olivia encounters a wounded war veteran who describes a woman who divorces a war hero who returns from the dead as selfish and worse. I kind of agreed with him as we saw zero interaction with the two. But aside from that, the divorce made their daughter a bastard. I had to force myself to ignore these questions to fully enjoy the story. Besides, I know Percy gets his own HEA.

    I don’t know why I didn’t write a review the first time I read the book, but I’m glad I didn’t. After reading close to 1,000 historical romance books over the last two years, I can unequivocally say this is one of the better ones (this whole series).

    I liked that the story had several different avenues of interest. It didn’t all take place just in one house it certainly held my interest. However, I failed to see the necessity to turn such a delightful book into just another “romance novel“ by adding not one but two different explicit sexual acts.
    The main plot and sub plot could easily have stood by themselves.

    This story is a historical romance that reads more like a fairy tale. Both of the main characters (him and her) are quite exaggerated. The plot moves along quickly enough: it is entertaining and also contains plenty of vivid sexual scenes. The author contrives the plot so that they don’t get together until right at the very end—right before the happily ever after. Nothing new under the sun but a nice diversion.

It's amazing how the aristocracy survived at all with their shallow rules and setting gossip as the most important part of life. Oh, that's right, I forgot they had to import 200 heiress from America to shore up their crumbling castles and mansions.

    This is a beautifully written story with many emotions bursting through its pages that I found difficult to put down .

    Sometimes you come across a book that is a cut above the rest, this is one of them. The story is a romance, it's not an elaborate story, there aren't any swashbuckling pirates or wars to contend with, but the quality of writing is superb. The author has used words like an artist uses paint from their palet.

    This book is a very enjoyable read from start to finish. The story is intriguing and entertaining and well written. The characters are endearing and well developed, and the plot keeps the reader's attention and interest. Five stars for this wonderful story.
