Text and Confused: It's hate at first text... (An Accidentally in Love Story Book 7) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 1,121 ratings

I'm Toni Capella and I'm a bad-man-o-holic. (Hi, Toni!). If a guy lives on the eastern seaboard, is covered in tattoos, muscles, and motor oil, I've probably already dated and dumped him. But it's a new year and for the first time in my twenty-nine years I'm determined to attract Mr. Right. I'm doing this by changing my type and my look.

So when super-hot contractor Cooper Flint walks into my office, I immediately put him on my 'no way' list. He embodies every bad boy trait there is. Besides, my eye is on another new co-worker, Sumner Livingston. Handsome, well-heeled, and professional, Sumner is nothing like my usual type, which I assume makes him perfect for me.

Determined to take things slowly for once, I insist Sumner and I keep our budding relationship separate from work. I even suggest we do our initial courting via text while we get to know each other better. Things are going beautifully and just when I'm starting to think he's 'the one,' I find out there's been a horrible mix-up. My boss accidentally gave me Cooper's number, not Sumner's, and I'm falling for Mr. Wrong, again.

Unfortunately, after I break it off with Cooper, I discover that Sumner isn't the good guy he portrays himself to be. When Cooper rescues me from a compromising situation, I belatedly realize I might be been missing out on the man of my dreams.

Have I lost my chance at true happiness or is there some way I can convince Cooper I'm the woman he needs?

In an effort to set me up, my Aunt Margie has been sending workmen to my apartment for the last month with false claims of leaky pipes and malfunctioning kitchen appliances. I caved and went out with one of the plumbers, but our relationship only lasted two dates. The guy loved to talk about his work and honestly, there’s only so much banter about clogged toilets I can stand. And during dinner, too.

Unbeknownst to me, Aunt Sheila started a Tinder profile in my name. She was swiping right, left, up, and down trying to find me a man. I went out with one guy believing he was my aunt’s neighbor. Things were going well until he mentioned a conversation we’d had online about blowup dolls. That’s when I discovered he didn’t know who Sheila was and that she told him I’d be up for a threesome as long as the third party wasn’t human. I’m not sure I’ll ever look at her the same way again.

In addition to vowing to never go out on another setup, I’m determined to take my dating life into my own hands. I also decided to change my type (see item six on my list). As a lifelong admirer of working-class men—there’s something so fundamentally manly about a tight T-shirt covered in axle grease, grass stains, or whatever (I refuse to consider what was on the plumber’s T-shirt)—it stands to reason I must now avoid them at all costs.

In a bid to attract a different kind of guy, I decided to channel Melanie Griffith in Working Girl. I’m upgrading from a slick-haired, cheating, lying Alec Baldwin to a sweet, respectful Harrison Ford—à la Jack Trainer (if you’ve never seen this golden oldie romcom, do so now).

After New Year’s, I went out and blew a fortune on clothes I figured a classy woman would wear. No more plunging necklines and tight pants for me. From now on it’s modest dresses with conservative heels—no more drag queen shoes. I’ve also dialed down the amount of makeup I wear, and I’ve swapped out certain phrases in my vocabulary. My penchant for colorful language has been redirected. I now say things like, “Oh, dear, my word, and for heaven’s sake.” So far, the only men I’ve attracted have been a pair of nice young men who wondered if I’d heard about the Book of Mormon. But fear not, it’s early days. I’m sure there’s hope for me yet.

Review

"Text and Confused by Whitney Dineen and Melanie Summers was a hilarious, passionate, and educative novel. I read this book with enthusiasm because I have enjoyed some installments in this series. The plot was beautiful, woven around a lighthearted storyline and stylish writing. I enjoyed reading about the memorable characters from Cooper to his sisters, Yuma, Holly, and even Natalie. Toni went through it with her succession of men. However, her character learned the dangers of stereotyping people the hard way. Never put people in a box no matter your experience, because there are rare treasures in the garbage. Whitney and Melanie made me laugh again, as they always do. I hope to read more installments of the Accidentally in Love Story. Thumbs up to Whitney and Melanie." --Readers Favorite 5-Stars

This may be one of my favorites of the  An Accidentally in Love Story series!

If you're a fan of Pride and Prejudice and Bridget Jones then you will love this story. It has a similar vibe. It's a hilarious, playful, entertaining, fun, definitely swoony read. I was hooked from the start.  I have so many favorite scenes and banters, most especially the hilarious kitchen scene/banter with Faith and Cooper. Their conversation will crack you up! Faith is such a charming, wise little girl. The meet cute moment between Cooper and Toni was also so adorable, hilarious and so cute!

The text messages are so sweet. But of course in most amazing love stories there are misunderstandings and complications which makes the story more intriguing and fun to read. Which is so true with Cooper and Toni situation. I felt bad for Cooper and thought Toni didn't deserve him. But he never gave up. There's a lesson to be learned from this story ..it is never judge a book by its cover 🤯😁!

You will be hooked on this read from beginning til the end. There are so many cute and sweet moments that will keep you all swoony and giddy. Love this book and the whole series.

Toni is a down to earth, no nonsense and funny woman with bad luck in the boyfriend department so she decides to go for the Bizarro Boyfriend (complete opposite of her usual type) since what she was doing wasn’t working.

Cooper is also one of those “no games” types and full of heart. Due to a misunderstanding, their lines of communication get crossed and Toni ends up trying to date the wrong man.

The best part of the story is that neither Toni nor Cooper were manipulative in their relationships and they end up falling to the machinations of others.

Once again, I'm in love with Toni and her snark, except when she's got it all wrong. Precocious Faith is back, which means one laughs out loud while reading this story. Then there's Archie and Holly, still totally in love. Enter Cooper, the man Holly is trying to hate. Heavy flirting goes on in the texting until reality hits. Funny, lovable story with a good ending.

I started reading it and didn’t put it down until I was finished. I loved the whole series. This was the perfect last book.
I found Cooper and Toni adorable and relatable. I don’t believe that the author has actually been to Forest Hills, Queens. My experience of the hometown of The Ramones isn’t a luxurious high end community. But, I look past that and enjoyed the characters and supporting characters (the main characters family and best friends). This was a great book for a romance junkie. I loved the mix ups. I also love the inclusion of the main characters from the previous book.

I received a free ARC of this book and am leaving a voluntary and honest review.

Very light and I liked that it wasn't a heavy romance. I think the pacing and the flow of the story went smoothly, from Toni's interactions with Cooper and even with the people around her.

I started this series with the 5th book, so I remembered a little bit more than this book explained, but there were still a couple of moments when I questioned Toni's family and history. Though her aunts were a riot, I was wishing to see more of them. I did feel like Cooper's issues with his family weren't covered, and since we also see his POV, I had hoped he and/or Toni would confront his family and show them that the way they treat Cooper is not okay. I don't know if that shows up in a later book (since I'm guessing his sister might be featured in another part of the series) but it would have been a good closing moment for his arc.

The later emphasis on the importance of communication is both a good reminder to Toni and to the readers. Romance books go hand in hand with miscommunication, that's how the story keeps going, but it's important to realize that a real relationship won't be just like in the stories. (I wish)

I enjoyed this, and if I get an opportunity to keep reading the series, I will. I had hoped that Cooper's family would see how wrong they are, and that was one reason I knocked off a star. (Also because Toni called Lucius Malfoy 'the noseless wonder himself' and I'm not sure if that was a writer error or Toni being clueless about Harry Potter, though it seems she watches a lot of movies)

This was a well done story capturing Toni wanting to try not to make the same mistakes she has made in her dating past. Cooper is a truly awesome guy and really wants to spend time with Toni as she looks past him to someone else. Very engaging story.

Yet again a wonderful escape stand alone novel from these two fabulous authors. It is funny, full of lively characters, and although stand-alone there are a few previous people that we have met before. Archie, Holly and Faith, make appearances to cement the story. Toni a friend of Holly’s is rubbish at picking men. So much so when Mr right arrived she over looked him, for another. Cooper, Mr right has to compete for a guy who really is rubbish, at getting Toni’s attention. Phone numbers are given, but the wrong or right ones are received, and the story unfolds. The wit and descriptions are delightful, and the eventual HEA , is heart rendering, proving love and truth can conquer if given a chance. Well worth 5 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars A quick, fun read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 2, 2022
Text and Confused is the sixth book in the Accidentally in Love series, and while they are all standalone stories, I would definitely recommend reading at the very least, as the supporting characters in this story are the main characters in Mistle Text, while Toni was a supporting character.

So, straight off, this was a world I was already familiar with. Toni is Archie's assistant, and having been screwed over by every single man she's ever dated, she's decided to give up on her usual 'type': generally working-class men. She's set her sights instead on Sumner, a well-healed fundraiser. So what if he doesn't make her swoon. He's dependable, with a regular income, and won't ruin her credit score. There's only one complication. The ridiculously hot construction manager Cooper. Cooper makes her swoon and want to do very bad things to him. But she's been there, right?

While I was initially annoyed with the whole working-class men ban, having read Mistle Text, I at least understood how bad things had been in her previous relationships. Of course, what she doesn't immediately realise is that Cooper is not only the manager, he's also the owner, and doing VERY well for himself. He's also having to fight classist labels from his own over-achieving family. I loved the immediate chemistry between Cooper and Toni. I was a little annoyed with the whole 'construction work is the lowest of the low' shtick throughout, particularly from Cooper's family (seriously, I thought Archie's were vile, but Cooper's could give his a run for their money). Faith makes her precocious return and steals every scene of course. Faith and Cooper's conversation over pancakes was particularly hilarious. My one real gripe was how rushed the ending felt. I wanted more Cooper and Toni actually together.

Overall this was a welcome addition to the series. I thought Cooper was pretty perfect, but Toni's blinkered attitude to Cooper frustrated me a little, and for that reason, I could only give this one four stars.

p.s. Could someone please tell Holly about 'Secret Smile'? It might not have been a hit in the US, but it was massive in the UK and definitely one of the best songs of the late '90s.(Not that I'm biased).

*Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to leave an honest review*
