Finalist of the Amazon Pen To Publish Contest 2017.
A gripping emotional inspirational fiction about love, loss, and finding hope in the darkest of times.
In the autumn of 2012, destiny wreaks havoc on two unsuspecting people—Soham and Fiona.

Can Fiona and Soham overcome their grief?
Will the overwhelming pain destroy their lives?
Seasoned with the flavours of exotic Nepalese traditions and set in the picturesque Indian hill station, Gangtok, The Fragile Thread of Hope explores the themes of spirituality, faith, alcoholism, love, and guilt while navigating the complex maze of family relationships.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2020Pankaj was kind enough to give me good feedback on my first book, so when I learned that he had just recently published a novel, I was very interested in reading it. There are few kinds of books that sell in India and most of them leave me thinking that the fiction market is just overcrowded and focused on shallow love stories that are easy to read and entertain. But thankfully, Pankaj’s book had a certain depth and vulnerability in the characters that immediately hooked me to the story. Depth is a side-effect of pain and suffering, and that is very well-crafted in both Fiona and Soham’s individual journey. The essence of the book lies in the struggles, emotions, and eccentricities of the main characters.
I know it becomes very easy for most readers to separate the characters from the author, but being a writer myself, I know most writers express themselves through their characters. So, it’s very natural for an author to tell a story by means of characters; a story that he has, in some weird alternate universe, already lived. This book also tells me that Pankaj is true and authentic to his writing. He isn’t trying to corrupt his readers with the use of flashy twists, shiny words, and frivolities. He remains dedicated to telling a story between two people who have experienced the cruelties of life, and at no point does he stray away from the plot.
Pankaj also did a good job of world-building through his descriptive style of writing, down to the nitty-gritty details. A few pages down, I had a fairly good idea of where this story was based and the alternating timelines. However, in spite of the very valid descriptions and backstories, I couldn’t relate with the characters as much as I would have liked, but I did understand them, and that’s all I need to justify why I loved this book. This was an introspective and thought-provoking read! Well recommended!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2017This book delves into the mind that has suffered loss, longing and faced death. It is not just about missing a person but about not ever being able to make amends if one wishes.
Death is a difficult topic to write on but Pankaj ensured that loss and life go hand in hand in The Fragile Thread of Hope. The void left by the loss that a loved one feels, the misery and the urge to not let go are all beautifully explored in this book.
The ones left behind continue with their lives yet it is a life half lived. To move on feels like cheating but to not move ahead is disheartening as well.
Pankaj writes from his heart, exposes the deepest human fears and inadequacies yet this book motivates the reader to look ahead. To fufil the dreams and to live a good life.
The topic is a sensitive one and it will provide solace to many hurt souls. It is not a light read but a story that flows and keeps the reader hooked with its steady pace.
If you have suffered a loss of a loved one then it is a must read.
I had the honor of editing this book and I was impressed with Pankaj's ideas, detailed and in-depth study of the topic. He has also explored the traditions, culture, and society in Gangtok in good detail.
A book that offers sympathy to the bereaved and strength with courage to face life after death. It will lighten your burden and strengthen you to face life anew.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2017After reading Pankaj Giri's "The Fragile Thread of Hope" I'm having mixed emotions about it. 3 things I really enjoyed about his novel was the vivid characters he created, his deep exploration of a culture I'm unfamiliar with, and his ability to set a scene. 3 problems I had with this book was the structure (the jumping timelines in the first third of the story made it hard to follow), my inability to connect to the characters (the characters in this story do go through a lot, but it didn't have the impact it could have if I felt personally invested in them), and the occasional grammar issues which would momentarily pull me out of the story (to be fair, the author is writing in his second language. If I tried writing a novel in a different language I would have a lot more errors and far worse errors than the ones made in this story). Despite these problems, I feel as though the author shows a lot of promise for the future. On a scale of "so bad I never want to read a book again" to "the greatest book ever," this one comes in as a "okay, but not my cup of tea."

5.0 out of 5 stars A Masterfully Written Ode to Melancholia!
There goes a saying, "Our pleasures are shallow, our sorrows are deep". The undeniable attribute of melancholia, is that, it is slow and lingering. Unlike happiness it is never in a hurry to leave. Pankaj Giri's novel, therefore, is a slow burn and deliberately so, which makes it feel like an ode to melancholia. It's the story of Fiona and Soham and their traumatic past that is unwilling to give in to their resilient present, which hangs by "The Fragile Thread of Hope". It’s a tale of love, loss, loneliness, regret and the power of hope. Loss is imminent but the baggage that it ensues often leads to regret and ruthless melancholy. The story moves at its own pace but cleverly leads to gut-wrenching moments of loss, which leaves the reader in a daze.
The first thing that strikes you about the book is the investment into its characters and that each chapter is dedicated to a specific character testifies the effort that has gone in. The characters are well-sketched, especially the leads, Fiona and Soham, and the author jumps timelines to unravel their arc. Another unique aspect of the storytelling is the use of delusions and dreams in vivid prose with the atmospherics playing an important role in them. Like this other-worldly experience that Soham goes through in a hospital in Bangalore after a ghastly accident, "A cool breeze caresses his cheeks, Soham finds himself on a chair in front of a wooden study table. Bright light streams in through the transparent panes of the window in front of him, blurring his vision. Observing the balustrade of the balcony beyond the window, he recognizes the place—it is his room in Gangtok”.
The writing has a rich poetic vein about it which shows in the author’s choice of words and formation of sentences. There is a languid flow to it all. The other commendable aspect of the writing is its symmetry displayed through some clever use of analogies. As a writer I can vouch that this is not an easy task but they are critical to help the reader visualize a scene in their mind. Only skilled writers can pull this off with aplomb. The following is a good example—"She walked past a streetlight, a swarm of moths hovering around it like a gang of flirts".
In May, 1886, Anton Chekhov once famously wrote to his brother Alexander, who was harbouring literary ambitions, “In descriptions of nature one must seize on small details, grouping them so that when the reader closes his eyes, he gets a picture. This is where the author excels the most as he expertly transports you to places. The following description of a bike ride in Gangtok is a good example, "The farther away the mountains were, the more their colour seemed to drop from green to blue and then lighter shades of blue. Dark clouds looming above the hilly horizon were on the verge of swallowing the setting sun".
Melancholy, undoubtedly has its own charm. It is strangely seducing and entertaining in its own way and this book is proof of that.
I will recommend the book to all dreamers, brooders, wanderers and eternal romantics. For its well-sketched characters, poetic prose and attention to detail, I think the book is a must read. I will give Pankaj Giri's masterfully written "The Fragile Thread of Hope" a 4.5/5.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautifully descriptive and atmospheric character led story about family, love, loss, grief, regret, loneliness and hope.
It has taken me a couple of days to recover from this book and compose my thoughts on this emotional story.
The 22nd October was a very special day, as it was the day I started this book and discovered a fellow book reviewer and blogger was also a very talented writer with a gift for creating an emotional story in such a beautiful way.
The Fragile Thread of Hope is a beautifully descriptive and atmospheric character led story about family, love, loss, grief, regret, loneliness and hope.
This story put me through so many human emotions. I really felt for the characters and experienced a deep empathy for their sadness and pain. I felt frustrated by the injustice of certain situations, heart-broken by their despair and loneliness, and happiness when their lives were more positive. All these emotions are what makes us human. Life experiences can shape us as a person and emotions can drive our future decisions.
All the pain and loss felt somewhat intense at times, but that was because I read about the characters’ lives in just a few days. In reality, many of us will go through some of the things these characters went through during our lifetimes. We’ve all experienced loss of a loved one at some point in our lives. I’ve lost family too soon due to health problems, and friends due to tragic accidents and suicide. Many of us have been in love and fallen out of love, and wondered if there is anyone out there for us. Readers will have no problems relating to the emotional challenges the characters within this book are going through, but be prepared for it being an emotional read. I had tears in my eyes on a number of occasions and even cried near the end after a few days of built up emotions. I think it was a combination of grief and relief that caused my own emotions to run down my cheeks.
This is not only an emotional read, but a thought provoking and inspirational one too. It reminds you how fragile life is, how easily loved ones can be taken away and how dreams can be completely shattered. It makes you question whether some things happen for a reason. My heart physically ached throughout this book, but the one thing I held onto was a feeling a hope. Nothing can take away your hope unless you let it. Hope is such a powerful thing. It can get you through pretty much anything if you allow it to help you.
I loved how this book made me feel so alive. Those raw emotions that make us so human. This is the kind of book that will inspire you to live for every moment and perhaps hold your loved ones a little longer and keep them closer. The Fragile Thread of Hope is a remarkable story by a very talented writer and is a book I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys an emotional read.
I’ve included three of my favourite quotes to give you an idea of the beautifully descriptive prose within this book:
A naughty breeze flirted with the stray grass in an uninhabited plot nearby, the lazy sway of the tall leaves betraying their shyness.
He found the rope of his consciousness slipping as darkness swept over him like a cloak.
She found herself glancing towards the heavens. The inky sky offered her a glimpse of the dark future that lay before her. The monstrous mountains stared back at her as if reminding her of her insignificance and mocking her for her helplessness.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tear-jerking, heart-rending and Melancholy!
Sometimes destiny invades our lives like an enemy, snatching the light of happiness from it. It is easy to lose our way in the dark maze of despair and give up on our precious lives, but we must hang on. Life always suspends an elusive thread of hope for us in the darkest of times. We must try to find it and hold on to it until the clouds of darkness disappear and give way to light.”
To say that I am depressed after reading this book will be an understatement. This is not a bad book in a literary sense, it is just sad; there is so much catastrophe, pain and loss imbibed in this story. It moved me, disheartened me and broke my heart. A few mornings ago, while reading the book, I came across this particular scene, which not only shook me from within, but I literally could not think about anything else for the rest of the day and believe me it is a rare occasion. I love a good tragedy any day but it has been a while that I read something so gut wrenching and heart-rending and I cannot express how deeply it affected me at emotional level.
“A fragile thread of hope” is about two people, Soham and Fiona. Both these people have led difficult lives. While Fiona’s childhood is marred by the presence of her alcoholic father and after his death, the struggles she and her mother has to endure in his absence. Soham’s life has not been the same ever since the death of his elder brother. Somehow, he feels responsible for his brother’s death and the incident has left Soham with enormous guilt and pain throughout his entire life.
Gradually though, the both of them move on from their painful childhood memories to a more stable adulthood but their happiness is short lived, as once again destiny plays a cruel joke on them by snatching away the people for whom they care most. Surrounded by gloom, misery and hopelessness Soham and Fiona, find their way to each other at that point of their lives when they have lost any hope from life itself. However, the question remains, after suffering the kind of loss that they did, will they ever be same again? Will they ever find happiness or move on?
It is not a love story but the author has explored the themes of love, misfortune and hope with extreme sensitivity. Pankaj’s writing is quite neat, easy and lucid and it is because of his exquisite use of language and beautiful descriptions that I was in thrall of this story. Gangtok is an extremely beautiful place but as gorgeous as it is, situated in the lap of the Himalayas, it also has its dangers. Pankaj has done a superb work in bringing out both of these aspects of this town to life. Moreover, I absolutely loved the beautiful narration of the culture, traditions and rituals of this part of our country. It reminds me how vast, beautiful and diverse our country truly is in every sense.
The novel follows dual storylines and POV’S and through a series of events from the past, the present events are connected. The whole story has a melancholy feel to it and it beautifully portrays how sometimes traumas faced by individuals in their early years can affect their whole lives. Although, the author pulled some familiar tropes and the story is quite predictable, I was invested in the lives of these people. Soham and Fiona, even their respective parents suffered great losses in their lives but what is admirable about them is that despite everything, they were also strong, brave and resilient. These characters represented hope and in the lure of the same hope that everything will be all right at the end I rooted for them and desperately wanted to know if they turn up okay. For what it’s worth, I absolutely loved the ending; it could not have been done better.
My 3.5 rating for this novel though, is not entirely based on how emotionally gripping this story is. If that were the case, this book would have been a five star read. I have mainly three problems with the novel. First, it is wordy, which I would have ignored if too much of the time were not spent on the past events. 75%, that is how long it took for the stories of the two main characters to converge. While, the past was important, the present is equally important and somewhere, in the midst of the narrating everything that happened in these characters past, the present of their lives are cut short. I do not have a problem with depth but I do have an issue with waffling. Which also brings me to the second point, the pacing and timeline issue. I felt the last 25% comparatively rushed to the rest of the book. I needed more relationship development between Soham and Fiona. If only a few details were cut out from the past… as for the timeline, honestly I completely lost track of it after a while. The third problem is somewhat silly but it bothered me so I will mention it here, the use of song lyrics to depict human emotions. Sorry! I am not a fan.
Overall, though “A fragile thread of hope” is captivating, enthralling and riveting. It is a kind of book, which even though sad at times, will beseech your heart and mind, it will make you revere your good fortune and most importantly, it will give you HOPE.
NOTE- I received a review copy of this novel in exchange of my honest opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars A life lived
An interesting story with remarkable description from beginning to end of every key character. Life in a society governed by changing norms and expectations. Strong images of the environment that can almost be tasted and inhaled.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hope has to be the home.
I have mixed emotions after I finished with this book and I am still searching for composure before I can prepare my mind and order it to direct my fingers to blend out some words for the praise of this book because in every way this book has proved that. This piece of a work has left me jerked and teary eyed and I had every intention of abandoning this book because I had this thought intensifying that why am I reading it which is pricking me thus and haunting me, bringing in me the my suffering past and for it I am still suffering? I was detecting every bad conclusions as I was progressing in this book but then a realisation dawned on me that if Soham and Fiona force themselves to cling on to the fragile thread of hope, why can't I? This book should own a Booker prize for fiction someday but the readers around the world may only see the author's perspective in bringing out the haunting images in this work but if life had only happy moments to offer then would us, the human beings have valued each other? That's why I brought out the positivity from this book, carried on with it thinking that life will give devastations as an exam of Destiny only to mark out that are we beings still holding on to hopes how much fragile may it be compared to the giant tragedies which life offers us? The mastery of this book is so deepening and thought provoking that it cannot be reviewed and this book has to made to send to every household so that in this disstressing time it becomes the weapon of those lonely people who we, the us forget to care about and they have to take shelter on the Biblical motif of As one is born alone, as to die alone. As a reader like mine, who have real difficulties in articulating her thoughts, this book both became a challenge and lesson to carry on with this travesty termed as life. The book is so complete and so fulfilling in it's own depth of chatacterisation that the plot has no loopholes and it ends in a complete circle. The vulnerabilities of the characters has been so deftly carried forward that it has been proved, when in the pits if distress, whether be it a man or a woman, one had cry their hearts out, jerk and has to move ahead, beacause the famous saying Time and Tide wides for none is always at large. I cannot agree with one issue with the author that the culture depicted in the book could have been brought out in a more happy light. This book may become disturbing as it may jeringly leave a being empty from the insides and may force out waters down the cheeks, but quoting the author I will say that this 'bittersweet' journey had to be taken as at last/at the end this will remain as a cherished gift forever to adore till the us breathes. The strength to believe in the Supreme Entity has been Meticulously woven in every word if this Master art and that view has made a reader like the relieved. I have agreed with the author that the belongings of a person cannot justify his/her soul and the materialism has to be given up a day as because memories hold on. Sometimes the thing we admire the most becomes the trajectory of all the glooms, that is nature here at her most wonderous form never stops to lash and smashes millions of love. Some of the modern techniques in this book has been successfully etched out. My mother always says that after every bad, there is a good and this book proves the meaning and I will continue to believe in it. I give my best regards to the author for his future endeavours.
