The Alpha King (Kingdom of Askara Book 1) Kindle Edition
Luca’s small pack is destitute due to the decisions of its ruling council, but as only an Alpha-heir, he has no authority to challenge them. Not until now—this moment he has waited a long time for.
Kit grew up as a street-rat, an unlicensed human who would never be more than a slave for whichever master owns him. But when he meets Luca, Luca develops abilities indicating he is not just a pack Alpha, but the King his world has needed for a thousand years.
Is Kit really the cause of Luca’s newfound power, the true mate he needs? How is it possible when the young man isn’t even a werewolf, a mating is not only forbidden, but for Kit, a sentence of death?

5.0 out of 5 stars What an awesome start to what promises to be an incredible series! Wow, just wow!
I've had the occasion to encounter Victoria Sue on Facebook. She is a kind, gentle, caring person. When reading her work after meeting her, you may get a bit of a jolt! She isn't afraid to go to the dark places with a story, making the character's triumphs that much greater, the joys much more abundant, and the loves so very much sweeter. Welcome to the Kingdom of Askara, a world of the distant future torn apart by conflict for centuries. You are invited to this incredibly compelling work with a thought-provoking premise! And courtesy of our writer, there are some new heroes on the horizon and some positive changes in the wind.
At the beginning of the narrative, we encounter Luca a werewolf who is dying after being poisoned by his twin brother born minutes after him. Luca was unaware of his brother's ambition to rule their destitute pack. While languishing, he is approached by a young human slave boy named Kit who intuits their connection and the value Luca will have on the entire Kingdom of Askara. Kit reaches out and their link results in Luca's healing and Kit is punished for being someplace with someone without his master's approval.
On his twenty-fifth birthday, Luca challenges his packs ruling council and rescues Kit from a brutal master after encountering him again. Acknowledging that Kit is his omega mate in spite of the illegalities of human-wolf mating is a brave one that can carry a death sentence. Long ago, wolf shifters were subjugated by humans who became so corrupted, the shifters were able to overthrow them. Being concerned about the human's robust ability to procreate and their exceptional potentially destructive tools and use of technology, human matings were understandably limited.
Referencing historical documents as precedents, Luca honors the legends that he and Kit are to be crowned together. They encounter those that would challenge their mating for a variety of reasons in addition to those regarding the long-held prejudices against human beings. Together Luca and Kit overcome several obstacles and receive one very delightful surprise: male omegas are capable of bearing young! With their offspring in tow, they are successful in establishing Luca as the Alpha King of Askara!
If there is ONE thing that makes a fantasy novel awesome it is a rationale for the premise. That bit of history or backstory that allows the books of the series to form a cohesive unit. Victoria Sue knocks this right out of the park. She continues to reinforce the premise with additional 'historic' information in the other books of the series. The world-building is extraordinary and the character development is phenomenal! In addition, there is optimum pacing (the rate at which the writer introduces key elements in the story), and exemplary balance (the distribution of varying types of elements in the narrative) that keeps the readers engaged, turning the pages, and anxious to get to the next book of the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2022This is truly a very beautiful book to read kit and Luca story is so intriguing. - Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2017Well, this was a romp. This is an action packed story, with just enough angst to get the tear ducts acting up a bit, and I read it straight through, though that was NOT my intent. The story grabbed me from page one and didn't let go til I was finished in the wee hours of the morning.
I really liked Kit. He is at the societal bottom of the barrel, even among slaves, and has the crappiest life ever, but what gets him through is his prescient knowledge that he and Luca will be together some day. He has every reason to be bitter but he's gentle and loving. He's got the True Omega thing going on, and Luca's a little slow to catch up, but once he does, they are great together.
There's political intrigue everywhere, with various parties trying to position themselves in power, and unfortunately, Kit falls victim to it for a little bit. Once Luca gets his head out of his ass, everything gets set to rights, but still, I sort of wanted to wring Luca's neck for a while.
There is definitely some glossing over events that perhaps could have been explored deeper, and there is a Big Misunderstanding that is borderline annoying (but angsty good and didn't drag on, thus, borderline), but what definitely annoys me by the end of the story is Luca's lack of follow through with his justifiable bloodthirsty revenge. I mean, seriously, he needs to bring the hammer down on some of these douches, but doesn't, which then leads to more troubles for everyone. REGARDLESS, I still immensely enjoyed this story and I sincerely hope that VS continues this universe in a few more stories. The end of this book opens a whole host of possibilities to explore, so I hope she does.
I liked the secondary characters, liked the concept of the omegas having a "specialty" for lack of a better word, and I liked the bits of political maneuvering and interspecies couplings. The horrible treatment of humans (ie) the kids working for the silk crops is heartbreaking. Lots of potential here to expand this world and blow it up.
Entertaining, fast-paced, and enjoyable.
Highly recommend.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2018I hate stories with deliberately forced plot-lies. This one has the contrived plot line of two "lovers" madly in love with each other, wolf and human, forcing them to keep on misunderstanding each other. I can totally understand lovers misunderstanding each other, but this one is totally manufactured and not a logical consequence of their misunderstood relationship, But one of happenstance over and over and over again. It was difficult to finish the book because of it.
But the story was well enough written and different enough from the usual proliferation of werewolf stories that I persevered.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good fantasy romance
I am new to this author and so far I am really liking her!
This is an alpha omega romance so there's obviously plenty of steamy scenes between the pair.
As far as fantasy goes, it has a decent amount of world building, though it was pretty fast in progress. We might find out more as this is in a series.
The action will keep you engaged and I found it enjoyable and thats all I ask in good romance!
