The Devil Pulls the Strings Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 123 ratings

The Devil Pulls the Strings is the pulse-pounding first tale in the Archivist series.

Set in modern-day Wentzville, MO, New York City, and 1813 Genoa, Italy, weaves bromance, Slavic mythology, secret societies, Paganini's music and time travel.

Twenty-two-year-old Boone Daniels has problems, debilitating panic attack, gut-wrenching guilt, a wendigo haunting him since age six, and now he almost killed his best friend in a joust. But when he fills in for his injured friend at a New York gig, he goes to meet the gig's contact at his NYC brownstone. A body falls from the brownstone balcony and the place explodes with gun fire. Boone barely escapes but uncovers a sinister plot to perform a rare Paganini piece that summons the Devil to trap Baba Yaga and destroy modern-day New York City.

He then finds himself on a race through time, to capture the cursed melody. Along the way, a Romani immortal, steampunk vampires and Baba Yaga set the stage for war, and Boone shall have to risk death for redemption. All Boone wants is to keep a promise to a friend. The same friend, he almost killed last Sunday during a joust.

Can a small-town Missouri musician outplay the supernatural and save NYC's soul?

If you like when tortured heroes, epic battles, time travel, twisted history and secret societies collide, then you'll love J. W. Zarek's spectacular page-turner.

I saw this book pop up as a sponsored book on amazon and I had to check it out. Read the blurb and reviews and totally disagree with the negative reviews. This is nicely written, not at all choppy or average.I'm really enjoying this book. Boone Daniels is the MC and it's written in First person POV. He has a friend that travels with him named Sapphire. Boone is chasing a song in time to save the city and he suffers from anxiety and every corner theyee about to take, you can feel his trepidation and fear. You can also hear the music through the writing too which I quite enjoy.I find this story to be more urban Fantasy than anything else and I've enjoyed it.

If you are a lover of the fantasy genre, look no further than The Devil Pulls the Strings by J. W. Zarek. This unique and innovative urban fantasy follows Boone Daniels after he vows to stand in for his friend at an event in New York after his friend is hurt in a jousting accident. What Flynn doesn’t know is that agreeing to this gig will pull him into a battle between top secret societies who have been involved in a terrifying feud for centuries. Boone discovers that the basis of the feud involves three mysterious musical compositions that when played together can summon the Devil. With this feud and his unfortunate timing of his arrival in the city, Boone will find the fate of the world on his shoulders.

The plot line as a whole didn’t feel corny or fake as some fantasy books can come across as. The story is written in a way that is engaging and has depth. While the characters are super creative in their development, they are also somehow very relatable to the reader. I found them to even be a bit endearing at times. Being able to evoke emotions like this in the reader is certainly the mark of an excellent author who truly knows how to write a character and develop a story. A true work of art and I hope that Zarek gives the reading world even more of his writing in the future.

Fantasy is one of my favorite genres to read and this one certainly did not disappoint. Zarek is a talented writer who did an outstanding job of blending fantasy elements and characters/beings from a variety of cultures to create a unique story that will hopefully lead to a really great series. I love that he included everything from a wendigo to Baba Yaga from Slavic folklore. It is such an original and creative touch. His world building is excellent and I really hope to see this world continue in other books. The writing was clean and well proofread and I didn’t find the pacing to be a problem. I was pretty invested in the story right from the beginning. Once I started reading, I had a hard time putting The Devil Pulls the Strings down. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy and excellent world building. It's a great read to grab today! You won’t regret this one!

I really enjoy urban fantasy books, the truth is that it is one of my favorite genres and I can say that “The Devil Pulls the Strings” is a great example of a good book of this genre!

The author created an excellent worldbuilding, very interesting, I think you have a bit of everything, it's a mix of things that happen, there is mythology, folklore, magic, immortal creatures, action, adventure, secret societies, time travel and many mysteries . So I never got bored. For me, this whole combination of elements was very original and epic! Let's add that the writing style is very pleasant, and fun to read, it doesn't make it heavy.

From the prologue that leave you wanting to know what is happening, and they keep you hooked until the end.

There are many fascinating and unique characters with varied and complex personalities in this book. Some you will love, and some, not so much. Our male lead Boone was my favorite, he feels real and you get very attached to him. He's not your typical main character, and I liked that.

I tried to not spoil much of a plot because you need to read it!!! Trust me. It’s refreshing and original. It’s definitely worth it.

This was my favorite quote:
“I’m everywhere and nowhere at the same time”

I hope to read more books by J.W Zarek in the future, he has a lot of potential as a writer!

The content was enjoyable, the writing became a little hard to stay focused on and in tune with. I think others would enjoy it, I just personally had too many hang ups with the writing style and formatting that I couldn't get past to finish reading.

I went into reading this novel not knowing what to expect from the author. I knew it was a supernatural based novel, and title implied dark forces might be at work, but the story-line was not that simple. This well-plotted out and structured tale took me on a ride from beginning to end!

As a reader I enjoyed this novel a great deal. As a fellow author I was envious of the talent displayed in the bindings of this novel. It isn't always just the story that compels readers, but how the tale is structured and presented. This review is not structured like my normal reviews simply because this novel was no common piece of literature.

I can't stress enough about how well articulated tale within this masterpiece of a novel is! When we read a novel, there is a common practice of indenting new paragraphs, indenting dialogue, perhaps, or whatever, but the way each sentence is spaced and each line is presented, you as a reader are drawn into the tale as though it were written by someone who knows how to paint a picture with their words.

I never give spoilers and I never will! All I can say is that of every novel I have read in my lifetime, this one stands out among the greats. If I am hated for stating this, so be it! H.P. Lovecraft and Edgar Allen Poe might agree that this dark and twisted tale is not just told well, it is structured well!

The main character of the book Boone Daniels is a Missouri musician who has many obstacles in his life. The major trouble that revolves around his life was a panic attack. When he was six, He lost his parents to an evil spirit. At the age of 22, he runs into the same evil spirit when he suffers from a panic attack. Whenever he encounters himself in a precarious dark zone, the evil spirit surges. During a St. Louis Ren Faire joust against his best friend Flynn Michales, an air horn on the tables spooks Flynn’s horse. Flynn thrust into Boone’s lance. And the tale goes on. Demons, Vampires, devils, all the things that will scare you for sure.
The book unquestionably daunted me. The characters are literally spooky, and the plot and the manner of illustration are stupefying. In specific areas of the novel, I forestalled certain plots but to my bewilderment, it had an utterly twisted story. If you want to terrorize your friends and family, this book will certainly petrify them. From first to last, it gives me chills. I handed out this to my friends who give me an intimated feedback to me. They thoroughly enjoyed the book. Looking forward to producing more books in the future. Thank you, J.W. Zarek, for this staggering book

A piece of advice to the author: you almost lost me during the prologue. It was confusing and not well written.
Thankfully, things picked up after that. The story moves at a relentless pace, but unfortunately, that doesn't leave much room for character development, and they feel flat. The constant descriptions of sounds - clinks, clanks, thumps - jarred, but I appreciate that the author writes graphic novels.
By all means not a bad book, just not my cup of tea.
